  1. My wife explained to me, when she was in college and working at Pizza Hut, that the toilet paper goes over the top for a very specific reason: so that your hand doesn't accidentally touch the wall behind the paper roll when you reach to pull. In other words, you gain a buffer between the wall and the paper you grab which is greater than or equal to the diameter of the paper roll (depending on the design of the holder) I don't know if Pizza Hut affects everyone's digestive system the same way, but during her time there, she had witnessed some incredible scenes in that restroom not unlike a painting by Jackson Pollock. Call it PTSD if you wish, but she prefers to touch as little of the environment as possible when using a public restroom.

  4. It's the incredible, shrinking....everything. Just happened to think of TV dinners "back when" and pulled this one up. Last one I bought was about 1/2 this size. https://www.google.com/search?q=ORIGINAL+TV+DINNER+1950S&tbm=isch&imgil=LrTkzSns6V4LyM%3A%3BfUHxFtt8dwUhLM%3Bhttps%253A%252F%252Fen.wikipedia.org%252Fwiki%252FTV_dinner&source=iu&pf=m&fir=LrTkzSns6V4LyM%3A%2CfUHxFtt8dwUhLM%2C_&usg=__5w3XALGlIOkAQ_Lbkl_rimSZVRQ%3D&biw=1280&bih=575&ved=0ahUKEwjx_Iuj2anUAhXD24MKHWy0C38QyjcISA&ei=D-A2WbG5GMO3jwTs6K74Bw#imgdii=GuVZfkPFp0ymEM:&imgrc=LrTkzSns6V4LyM:&spf=1505344901791

  5. This thread is funnier (and more informative and enlightening) than the 3 bears Charmin commercials. But the best TP story I ever heard was a client of mine (who passed away 10 years ago at 97 y/o) was part of the Norwegian resistance during WW2. He and another guy wrote memoirs on a roll of TP. I assume the paper at that time had more substance. They wrote a book about it....the resistance, not the TP.

  10. Today the U S banned the use of Kaspersky Labs security software at all federal agencies. Actually, I am very surprised this took so long, since the founder and CEO of Kaspersky learned his craft while working for the KGB. According to U S Intelligence Agencies, Kaspersky still has very close ties to the Kremlin. The U S is so gullible, we don't realize the opposition is playing for keeps !

  11. It is an offshoot of our own general good-will towards all, as a people, as well as our generally very accepting and high-trust culture. Many, many people in this country just do not get that 1. there really is evil in this world, 2. that there are people out there who 2a. dislike us intensely or 2b. hate us and want us dead, and 3. that those selfsame people have long memories, will not "let bygones be bygone" and will carry out their original intent of harm long after we have forgiven all and just want to be friends. John Ringo, in his (totally awesome "no shit, there we were") book "The Last Centurion" has a great discussion of high-trust and low-trust societies; best I've ever read anywhere, and I recommend it highly. The book itself is a bit of a polemic - but ignore that aspect if you prefer, and you've still got a rollicking good read. How can anyone not love a book where the first chapter is entitled, "In A Time of Suckage"?!

  14. The extended due date for calendar year S-Corps is September 15th. There is no additional time available beyond that - unless the IRS would grant additional time for things like Harvey and Irma in the affected areas.

  15. So the real question then, is who sold the assets. And the answer to that question would be - the S-Corp. Accordingly the sale would be reported on the 1120S and yes the goodwill would go on Schedule D. You confuse the issue when you say " small piece of real estate owned by the Corp that the TP and spouse kept". If this was owned by the Corp, then the Corp kept the real estate. Unless the Corporation is being "wound up" and liquidated, there is no immediate and pressing need to get the real estate out of the Corp - unless the shareholders have already transferred the title to themselves. In that case, the distribution would be at FMV. All distributions will reduce the shareholders' basis.

  16. Definitely check the fees in your state. CT allows a $10 fee to impose and to lift a freeze, but both are free to folks age 62 or older. Not that it can do much good because the crooks have the data they need to pretend to be you. Since all the credit reporting agencies have essentially the same data on us, a breach at one of them is as good as hacking all of them. The real scary part is that crooks now have enough data on half of us to become us. They can move to Idaho, use our name, get a job, vote, get a cell phone, rent an apartment, get a bank account and credit cards, rob banks, sell drugs, kill someone--all in your good name. A freeze can't fix it. The world as we know it will have to change. IRS will have to issue everyone an IP PIN; lenders will have to verify applicants' identities in person; no more security questions about prior addresses or mortgage payment amounts--the answers are all out there now. This will be costly for the gov't and businesses that rely on credit scores. This company needs to close. There will never be enough money to pay for the damage done.

  17. Just like "security" software which keeps pushing out "false positives" as a not so subtle reminder they are "protecting" you, so you will renew. Theft out of my pocket, as we hear often from someone who gets a false positive, stating they were going to order, but cannot trust us, when the actual problem is the user not keeping their "security" software current, or the "security" software simply being wrong (for a profit). Thank goodness there are now many free "security" programs (they really are not, they really just serve as a backup should you do something you should not), which are far more accurate than the paid offerings. VirusTotal is also a good way to quickly check something against the day's current security signatures en masse. As awful as identity theft is, if one is prepared, it is not really a life changer. Not easy to deal with, but it can be dealt with (not defending the error, just making a point). One of our kids has a VERY common name, and has many incorrect items shown on a credit report. He deals with it as needed, without constant worry. In face to face needs of credit (renting an apartment for example), the other party can fairly easily see and understand the problem. The "instant" online machine generated approvals, not so much, but that can be a good thing, since those items are usually high interest types of credit. To go even further, without getting into all the details, I know of a few folks who have been issued a new SSN (for reasons not including identity theft), which is WAY more trouble than incorrect credit reporting.

  18. Happy Anniversary! All the best for many more happy years of togetherness. I usually renew in May, would be nice to at least be taken out for a martini.

  19. I too can't believe it took this long. It's like we are either sleeping on the job or just plain naïve and stupid, or maybe our free society is too slow to recognize, investigate, and take action.
