You will have to show up at Rita's home this summer for Abby's training seminar to find out. Stay out of the back 40 and for God's sake don't accept a hug from anyone.

JB, me, too. And I wonder about future years. How long will we be required to change the password every 90 days? With the 3 year sol, we sometimes go back to prior years to amend or even prepare original returns. Frankly, I have my passwords on my desktop so I don't forget. It's just me here, home office, all alone...
I think I've spent more time typing my user ID and password into the 2016 and 2017 program than I have actually doing taxes.
OK..not really, but it sure feels like...I truly hate the password requirement. It is just me...working out of my home office...no clients in my office...no friends or family in my office.
I do not have any affected....that I have done. I think there are several in the "To-Do" pile that have PMI, but they are in no hurry. As I get to them, I'll give them the option to file now or wait until end of March...no later. March 31st, I'll tell all waiting that I need to file now (or pay my $50 April price increase) then advise them that can pay me to amend once forms are finalized.
“This tax season is going to be a disaster in terms of our own client service, but likely nothing as bad as next filing season when those $2000 refunds turn into $40 ("but you already got the money in your paycheck" isn't going to cut it).”
Same thing I am telling my single, no dependent clients, and maybe it’s not a bad idea incorporating something to that nature on the transmittal letter and highlighting it.
What's affecting us in addition to the extenders is that the 2018 ES vouchers aren't ready yet. At first I couldn't believe it because all IRS has to do is change the date from 2017 to 2018, but then someone pointed out that there's a whole booklet that goes along with the form, and I imagine that has to be recalculated to conform to the new tax rates and lack of exemptions. All I can think of to do is make a list of clients who need their vouchers and mail/email them when available. Why oh why did policymakers do this to us, to the IRS, to zillions of taxpayers at the last minute??? This tax season is going to be a disaster in terms of our own client service, but likely nothing as bad as next filing season when those $2000 refunds turn into $40 ("but you already got the money in your paycheck" isn't going to cut it).
This site is for tax professionals using a specific brand of software not used by the generalpublic . We do not answer questions posed by nonprofessionals here. You should consult with a knowledgeable tax professional or hire that pro to prepare your returns.
The preparer of the partnership does not determine the 754 step up, that comes from the preparer of the 706. It is the executor's responsibility to inform the partnership of the election amount. Remember a 754 can go up or down and also if real estate part of the step up needs to be allocated to land.
I haven't used ATX since the 2012 issues but i recall at that time it sucked at keeping track of the step up and getting the program to just allocate that depreciation to the applicable partners. I strongly suggest an excel spreadsheet, especially if there are multiple 754's.
I only open 2017 to work on a return. Almost never open prior year software when working on current year. I close ATX to clear memory after working on a few returns or one big return. But I rarely get the 20 minute log out.
I only have to press 2 keys to insert my password, so it doesn't bother me at all.
They gave us a draft 4562 and 1040 for weeks before it was approved. They should have done the same with 1040ES and every other common form.
I had to manually type in the estimated tax amounts and dates on a client letter this morning. A draft 1040ES would have made that unnecessary.
Thanks Max W for the information. It is very helpful. I have already decided to pass on the return. I just wanted to know a bit more. This client gave me the opportunity to look into this so I did. I am not sure that I cannot handle it but really don't want to cut my teeth on this and in all reality, I may not ever see another return like this.
J-1 visas holders have a lot of issues that have to be resolved.
One thing is certain, he cannot claim the wife or child. He would have to become a US Citizen, or LPR (Lawful Permanent Resident), then apply to ahve the child and wife admitted as immigrants to the US.
After you read this, you may want to pass on the return.

That's been a recurring problem for some users for the last 2 or 3 years. Basically due to sloppy programming, the ATX program fills up your print cache with garbage.
When your print cache overflows, the program crashes. By rebooting your computer your print cache is cleared allowing the program to work again.
If you know how, you can clear your print cache without rebooting.
I wanted to wait a couple of days before commenting. I have Norton. I set it to Quiet Mode when ATX is open. My understanding is that the anti-virus protection is still working in Quiet Mode, but some of the background processes are stopped and notifications are stopped. I haven't had any freeze ups the past two days so maybe that was the problem. I did have a closing while I was in a return trying to print a high number of forms checking them off. This return had a higher number of forms than the average return. The program closed, I couldn't re-open until I restarted the computer.
