I have multiple lawyer friends / coworker arrangements and 15 minutes is pretty normal. You do a 2 minute call - bam $75 charged. I had a lawyer in my office on Monday late in the day and we talked about nothing for an hour. On Wednesday I ask if he was ever going to get me that folder of documents and he says he gave it to me Monday - that's why he was at my office. I tear up my office looking for this huge file - nope. I KNOW he didn't give it to me but he's sure he did. He looks everywhere in his home, office, car on Thursday and can't find it. It's got to be in my office. His dad calls me this morning and asks why a huge folder of tax documents meant for me is sitting on his recliner. Heart attack averted.6 points

I just learned you can use Google Drive to do the same thing. Open Google Drive app on your phone Click the + sign Choose scan Take picture Click checkmark At this point, you can click the + sign to add more pages, click the circle arrow to take a better picture, or click the checkmark to say you're done. When you're done, you name the file and it's saved to your drive. It does a really nice job of turning a photo into a nicely cropped PDF scan, and even tries to make the PDF searchable. Clients could share a drive folder with you, or you could share a folder with them and you have a free portal! After you download files from Drive, you can delete them, if you like.3 points

I hate the texts, because they are a pain to print, usually too dark. But, any method that keeps them out of my house, keeps paper they touched out of my house!3 points

I haven't heard of any modifications to clients having to sign. Most of my clients print their 8879's, sign them and then either scan or text them to me. Like Lion, some use the mail slot. Next year it's all about E-signing.3 points

There are two camera apps that are useful instead of only taking and e-mailing a picture. They are Genius Scan and CamScanner. The apps are available for both android and apple. The user takes a picture with a smart phone and the app convert it to pdf format and files it in a folder. Several scans can be added to the folder then the entire folder can be e-mailed to the preparer.2 points

Save the picture of the text 8879 to your phone. Attach that picture to an email and email it to yourself. You can print from there. Some folks may be able to print from their phones?2 points

I think you just have to override it directly on Schedule D.2 points

Yes. See the Journal of Accountancy article that Abby Normal posted in this topic:2 points

We're thinking of doing that with one of ours. Nice guy - but a clueless dolt who sends stuff in drips and drabs, does not read what we send him, does not answer the questions asked - always pulling hens' teeth to get his returns done. So now, WE'RE done.2 points

Did you mark the Sch E as "disposed of"? The suspended losses, current losses, and the gain on sale should all flow onto the form 8582. Yes, what JHaymaker said. We were typing at the same time.1 point

I believe it should show as allowed on the 8582 and the loss should flow through as allowed on sch E its been a bit since I have done one of these but seems there is a spot to flag the rental as disposed of jeff1 point

Hmm, new skill for me. How does one print a text? I greatly discourage clients from using my cell for anything and, in fact, only those clients that are also personal friends have my cell number. And about the last thing I want to do is constantly check my phone for client info. If they can test, imo, they can email and I can save to their file easily.1 point

I've not used it personally but there is another preparer in my area who uses is without issue for our local city occupational tax.1 point

The due date for 2016 was 14 April 2017 or if extended 15 October 2017. You can file a late return at any time. But, you cannot get a refund later than 3 years after the original due date or two years after a payment. If you are filing a 2016 return in hopes of a refund, 15 April 2020 is most likely your final chance.1 point

He doesn't make that much money, so we don't want to do that to him (yeah, we're softies). But at this point, if he paid us triple our current fee I'm not sure we'd still want him. Although maybe for this year's returns we'll hike the price to what the local over-chargers charge him and maybe he'll go away on his own.1 point

I have a ton of returns yet to do and finish but I am 100% caught up. Nothing in my possession is able to be done except deliver a few returns when the "shelter in place" order is lifted in 3 weeks. I have about 12 returns that are requiring some K-1 forms. Gotta say, it's a weird feeling.1 point

Hahaha, yes, this reminded me of my client who came in with her stuff and told me that her husband said to make sure I knew that they wanted the dividends and capital gains distributions on her individual account to be tax deferred. Oh, is that what you want? Ok, good move, savvy investor. I see you're all over it now this fifth year you've had this account and the first year you've opened the envelope before giving it to me.1 point

Yes. There is a 2 part article in Tax Advisor from 2013 which goes over the complexities of dealing with foreign benes and it is something that the trustee and I decided it was better for someone experienced in this to handle. There are other complexities apart from the taxes that have to be dealt with.1 point

We know better Rita. Some of us have been to your home and seen how beautiful the garden grows. Who knew hugging was such a good fertilizer. Tom Modesto, CA1 point
