  1. Two questions: why didn't he contact the employer if he knew the SSN was incorrect on his W-2 and why did he file a tax return using an SSN he know was wrong?

  2. Another option to consider, if you actually like ATX otherwise, is to downgrade to the 1040 package and just pay the PPR cost for the partnerships, about $35 each. I did that and have saved a lot of money while still keeping the program that I know. I get just 3 states and have clients in 7 states so pay for the extra states but, ummm, build it into their invoice. I bill by time and it does take time to add money to the account and download the extra state/form. My renewal for 1040 is $843, a far cry from the MAX cost.

  3. ^^ Same thing happened to one of my clients, the payroll company transposed the daughters middle two numbers, the IRS sent a letter to the real SS# which in turned called my client and left a threating voicemail. My client asked me to call the lady and she was accusing my clients daughter of fraud, identity theft and the that local authorities were notified etc... that we were going hear from her lawyer, once we got to the bottom of it, the payroll company corrected the W-2 and lady was happy it was just an error and not identify theft.

  4. What I think is that your multitude of questions is well beyond what anyone here would be able to answer appropriately to your best advantage, and that you, as the CEO, should hire a tax attorney that practices in the states involved to formulate the plan(s) on how best to structure these businesses to achieve your objectives and who will be able to provide the pros and cons of the plan(s).

  5. You won't beat Drake in this price range. You owe it to yourself to take a good hard look at it. I switched from ATX to Drake during the 2012 meltdown. I only wish the ATX meltdown had happened 10 years earlier so I could have gotten on with the transition. Can't imagine using anything but Drake now. It's lightning fast, uses very little resources, and customer service simply cannot be beat. There's a bit of a learning curve ditching forms entry and going to data screens, but it's just a matter of giving up a crutch. I switched in January of that year and was moderately up to speed within a couple of weeks. One you get the hang of it, Drake will make you more efficient, which translates into more profit. Or more free time, whatever you prefer.

  6. As a proud Grandpa to 7 grand kids, welcome to the fold! It's awesome. Grandpa is the best job I've ever had.

  7. My informally-adopted (absorbed?) son and his wife are also expecting a baby girl, in September. So I'll get to be a grandma-equivalent again!

  8. Tom, come visit Tennessee and stop in to see me in Manchester. I can show you around, even take you to Rita's town. Middle Tennessee is exploding with people from all over the country. Extreme Western part of Virginia I visit quite often and is gorgeous, much like extreme Eastern Kentucky. My cousin lives in Vacaville, CA and is dying to move. In the last month, 3 neighbors on his block have moved out. One to AZ, another to CO, another to ID.

  9. This isn't just transposing numbers. The SS# on the W-2 is nowhere near the TP,s or his late wife.

  11. Just curious. Do you use keyboard shortcuts and macros? That will significantly speed up your efficiency if you're not taking advantage of them. (Or have we talked about this on another thread? I can't remember. ) Once I settled in with Drake, I realized the mouse was often slowing me down.

  12. Has he actually shown you the letter from the IRS? I'd take a very careful look to try and determine if it's legitimate. (Before he calls them). Would also be wise to have him check his transcript online before calling them if possible..

  13. I used ATX for a few years, prior that, I tried so many different ones. I used TaxWise, Drake, TaxAct, OPL, Ultra Tax (currently still use in my day job), and took trial on Proseries. I am happy with ATX. It is easy to find spot to enter data in ATX and efile process is simple and clear. Yes, ATX has some customer service issue because they did not enough extended hours. (ATX is a little more expensive compare with others and even dont allow do 1099Q , they told me need to upgrade another version with extra payments which is not nice. ) You may try trial for all, and find the one you like the most.

  14. While I switched from ATX to Drake 3 tax seasons ago, if the choice was between ATX pre 2012 and Drake , I would choose ATX pre 2012. For me, preparing returns on Drake takes a little longer because their entry screens have so much stuff squeezed into them, it's hard to find things sometimes. In addition there are several annoying entry screens, that I have no idea where they are, the only way I find them is with their search function which works well. In addition there is the extra time spent between going back and forth between entry screens and looking at form screens. Just to be clear I am satisfied with my decision to switch to Drake. However Drake is not a perfect program, it has it's pros and cons.

  15. I've been reviewing Pro Series and I'm very impressed with what I've been exposed to so far. It has a similar feel and layout to ATX and it's program offers form based entry which I prefer. The package also provides access to a portal and advanced calculations as part of the base price. Their staff have been very receptive my questions. I highly recommend downloading the trial version and seeing if it fits your needs. Good luck.

  16. Thanks for all the replies. Gleim seems to be the best choice. Right now they are offering 20% off and the first 72 hours of CPE is included. So, Gleim it is.

  17. Very true. I am good at self-study and crammed for five weeks before the exams. The totally unexpected side benefit was I had zero complaints about homework from my girls that entire school year; they had seen up-close and personal what real studying looked like!

  18. What everyone else said. The 3115 will NOT cause problems with prior years - its purpose is to correct all those prior year problems in one swell foop, without making any changes in the deep dark past. Lisa Ihm's book/booklet is terrific and well worth the price. Once you actually sit down with it, you'll be surprised how relatively straightforward it is. What you will need to do is to manually correct depreciation on that property, because the 3115 corrections do not automatically flow anywhere; there are too many possibilities. The hardest part is to remember to MAIL in a copy to ...wherever it goes; Ogden maybe, in addition to attaching the form as a pdf to the return.

  19. If he has income under the table and is not willing to report that income, then wife may prefer to file MFS rather than sign a return that deliberately under-reports income.

  20. Depends on the amount of UBTI... Are you the church treasurer? Stewardship chairman? An officer of any kind? Even if not, get the work to those that are: selling stock gifts upon receipt is a best practice.
