  1. First I would quickly use a free annual credit check i.e., Experian, Equifax, & Transunion to see if there is any bad stuff out there. Second I would freeze my credit to halt any identity theft from happening. Some people do a credit alert but that just informs you that the bad stuff has already happened. Third I would immediately pull a tax transcript and make any other inquiries to see if any other funny stuff has happened. Unfortunately, this misuse is often done by another family member or a close friend.

  2. If she doesn't do any 1099 work, I'd start the identity theft process, but if she has a Sch C business, I'd suspect she did work and just didn't realize who she was getting paid by.

  3. I'd rather blow $3.49 each and get EFileMyForms to take care of it all. I know for certain-sure that their system works.

  4. "Use Form 9465 if you’re an individual: • Who owes income tax on Form 1040 or 1040-SR, • Who is or may be responsible for a Trust Fund Recovery Penalty, • Who owes employment taxes (for example, as reported on Forms 941, 943, or 940) related to a sole proprietor business that is no longer in operation, or • Who owes an individual shared responsibility payment under the Affordable Care Act (this payment won’t be assessed for months beginning after December 31, 2018). " "Don’t use Form 9465 if: • Your business is still operating and owes employment or unemployment taxes. Instead, call the telephone number on your most recent notice to request an installment agreement. "

  5. I know how to increase the size of my fonts for windows. And I know inside a tax return, I can slide the bar at the bottom and increase the size of the form I'm looking at. But when I leave the return and go back to the menu of clients under returns manager or rollover manager, or any main menu, everything is small.

  6. And if you increase your font in Windows, ATX may have display issues. I've seen such issues reported before and it seems to be related to screen resolution, which is the main way people make their screens more readable. The best solution is bigger monitors.

  8. OP said that only 26 days were work performed in MA. Still need a MA non resident return but only for 26/280 days.

  9. This guy does not need or qualify for HOH. To satisfy due diligence, you need documentation that son lives with him. What do you list on Line 5 of the 8867? Report card? Doctor statement? Mom's testimony isn't listed as one of the supporting docs. IRS doesn't usually complain unless both parents claim the same kid, but still....

  10. Lack of good supporting documentation for a Schedule C can be very challenging.

  11. Encyro. Handles signatures and is a secure client portal. Easy to use and not that expensive. Pennies per signature.

  13. How do you answer Q 15 on 8867?

  14. You'll need to wait until an executor or personal rep is appointed and then deal with that person. She is the surviving spouse, but I'm not sure how that matters to you. Some of the same questions are dealt with in this current thread

  15. I accidentally sent this off before finishing it and editing. As noted she provides a notarized statement attesting to the son living with him. I this go around again reviewed this with him and he advised " I ain't worried my wife will swear to him living with me". I note on his return on line 5 of Form 8867 Notarized affidavit from wife and the Service has yet to raise any questions. And now he is off living with his latest femme fatal on a local lake. Some guys have all the fun.

  16. This reminds me of a client which I fired some years ago. She was a hairdresser filing HOH and her Schedule C Income magically hit the maximum EIC sweet spot every year?

  17. Just looked it up. Filing time limit for SE Income is 3 years 3 months and 15 days. So the time limit for 2019 to be filed is April 15th 2023.

  18. Over the last several decades, people have changed. Just as we used to go to a butcher for meat a produce stand for produce, etc., we now seem to want one stop shopping. Like some of my customers, I suspect yours will ask anything, just in case you will answer it for free. This type of thing is one of the reason I had to drop phone support several years back. Literally, today, I helped someone discover who was using different software, that they were making a typing error. The initial contact was a complaint that the "IRS" was coming up with a different figure than Medlin (it was neither the IRS or Medlin). I get asked for things like if I can make data from X software work with mine, and often, basic computer operating questions. It is a real art to deflect, and keep things within the scope of what they have paid for.

  19. I don't think he'll get SS credit for returns overdue by 3 (?) years or some amount of time, so if he expects the missing years to help his SS calculation it would be better to file them sooner rather than later. Why do our clients think we are SS experts?!
