  1. A bit frustrated with the recent ATX e-mail, received yesterday, with the offering of a free copy of the Taxbook Deluxe along with the extended renewal pricing. What about the long time customers who renewed during the "initial" renewal discount period??. I am calling tomorrow, FWIW. Do not understand their marketing or lack of marketing. Feel like a sucker!

  2. Because they don't care about their customers. They've been doing this for years. The company also has a disconnect between the marketing and sales depts. They should give out those free toasters books to everyone that's already renewed.

  3. How much were the phones? I'm guessing the cost exceeded the $500 deminimus safe harbor for 2015. With the IRS raising the safe harbor to $2500 in 2016 and offering audit protection of not challenging earlier implementation of the threshold, I might be inclined to expense these. "Effective for taxable years beginning on or after January 1, 2016, the Internal Revenue Service in Notice 2015-82 increased the de minimis safe harbor threshold from $500 to $2500 per invoice or item for taxpayers without applicable financial statements. In addition, the IRS will provide audit protection to eligible businesses by not challenging the use of the $2,500 threshold for tax years ending before January 1, 2016 if the taxpayer otherwise satisfies the requirements of Treasury Regulation § 1.263(a)-1(f)(1)(ii)."

  6. Never expected to follow up so quickly- but Will already returned my call, to inform me that one of the "skeleton crew" members that was staffing the sales office on 5/27, failed to finalize my order, thus I was able to renew today at the discounted rate plus receive the Taxbook. Weird, how this worked out, because I thought I ordered on 5/27, however I never received a confirmation, nor was my card charged. Very impressed that Will returned my call so quickly. But does not answer the question, why a more lucrative offer was put in place later than the initial one, and if they will extend the free Taxbook to the May renewals????

  7. I called this morning & the first sales associate I spoke to "John" says they offer different promotions at different times, so May's early renewal promotion (in which we were hard-pressed to take advantage of), is different than this month's promotion of the early renewal price, w/ a free copy of the Deluxe version of The Taxbook. So I said, "I am being penalized for renewing in May, because you now offer a better promotion in June". He then said he would switch me over to my sales rep (which I never knew I had, BTW, "Will". Had to leave a voice my, because "Will" was not available. They should have never sent out "renewal e-mail promotions", to those who have already renewed. I am going to press this issue, as I feel they should have offered the Taxbook with the May renewals as more of an incentive!

  8. My son has finished his ground school training for SkyWest and will be going now for flight sim training on the CRJ, which is the plane that he chose to fly. He will be flying for United, Delta, American or Alaska, depending on flight schedules at the hub he ends up at. I am so excited for him. It doesn't seem possible that it has just been six years since he began to fly. All of the sleepless nights, being totally neurotic and following him with a tracker and on flightaware has paid off for him and me. He was so focused and got what he wanted immediately after graduating from college and I am now able to fly with him in 4 seater planes without help from any drugs. I can even sleep while he is flying and not have to pray constantly to keep the plane in the sky. (Some of the planes that he had to fly needed all of the help that they could get.) I look forward to doing a little traveling if my husband's health allows it.

  9. I can double click on the expense field and a list page will open. I use that a lot for the same reason.

  10. The Internal Revenue Service is warning tax professionals that next year, a new law will require the IRS to hold all Earned Income Tax Credit and Additional Child Tax Credit refunds until Feb. 15 as a safeguard against identity theft and tax fraud. The correct address to the article: http://www.accountingtoday.com/news/tax-practice/irs-to-delay-tax-refunds-involving-eitc-and-actc-next-year-78387-1.html

  11. My new sales rep had called back in the midst of tax filing to see if I wanted to renew. I told her not now but to call back after tax season ended, she never did. Since ATX had the May 31 deadline for the 10% deadline, I renewed before that date. Now I received the Flash Sale email the other day whereby they now will give you the Tax Book Deluxe free if you call and renew by end of day today with your sales rep. I called today to speak with my sales rep and she basically said too bad, you already renewed and can't do anything for you. This offer is only for those that have not renewed yet. So it's shows that those that wait get the best offer. Let's see what July will bring surely something even better.....

  14. I would think that if workstations can connect to the internet, and those same workstations can connect to the server, the server can get hacked. There are a lot of really brilliant hackers out there. Jack has a multitude of precautions to thwart them, but I've given up hope that anything on a computer is 100% safe.

  15. I'd do a 1040X with a lengthy explanation and a corrected 1045 attached, clearly labeled DO NOT PROCESS-1040X ATTACHMENT ONLY.

  17. My software has a List feature. I click on the icon anytime I want a detailed list behind a line. Utilities, for instance, in office in home; out here in the boonies that's oil and electricity and maybe something more specific to that client's house like propane. I even use it for just one item when I want to remember where it came form. For instance, when the mortgage interest is paid to ABC Bank; so if I get a 1098 next year from XYZ Bank I ask them if they refinanced, got a HELOC, forgot to bring me ABC, whatever. They think I have a great memory when I ask about their alarm system expense, for example, that they had last year but forgot this year. Helps for nurses and such that have various license renewals that might be every two years or one or three. I use List a lot.

  18. I did get to speak to the IRS today about this letter for my step-father. The efile rejected, as expected, so I called the PPL and they were very helpful. He did let me know that the letter was indeed legit, and that they had received our response and the earlier return was rejected with no refund being issued. He did ask me a lot of questions to verify my identity and both of my POA's. I hope that this doesn't take forever to resolve, since I get asked daily about it. I love my Mom, but she worries about everything!

  19. I would recommend to the client to amend and pay 2014 and 2015 taxes owed ASAP to limit interest and penalties. This is what I'd do whether or not 2013 was being audited. I wouldn't try to guess at what IRS is going to do, or how long they will take to do it - just do what should be done to file correct returns.

  20. I try to break clients of lumping expenses together for the very same reason. I have one doctor who lumps differently every year. I had a talk with him this year after being thoroughly confused.
