  1. If within the 60 day window, it is treated as a rollover. No tax or penalty. Same process on the tax return.
  2. Work boots, union dues and "Don't forget what I paid YOU last year!!" I fill out the Schedula A, make sure it is in their copies, and everyone is happy!!
  3. The same 60 day rule applys to the withdrawal of funds as well. Document the date it was taken out, and the date it is put back. She will get a 1099R for the withdrawal which must be included on the 2012 return. If she replaces it before you do the return, put the taxable amount in as $0 and the amount replaced as "rolled over." She WILL get a CP2000. That is where your documentation comes in, to respond to it. Have had several of these situations.
  4. It does not apply, as your client will find out. They will need certification from the manufacturer that the device qualifies for the Energy Tax Credit. Nothing like those control units is in the IRS list.
  5. I have obtained several new clients who had VITA do their returns the prior year. Had a call this year from an 82 year old that did not make his RMD. His wife was very ill at the end of the year, and he overlooked it. The VITA preparer did not have any idea what to tell him to do. I told him to ask for a refund of the fees he paid. "It was free." Me - "Sounds like you got good value!" VITA preparers are exempt from PTIN rules. Nuff said...
  6. You folks running Windows Server 2003 should pray that your server survives to the end of the tax season. Microsoft has stopped servicing Server 2003 as well as XP. You do realize that both OS are 10 years old now? We had server hardware (8 year old machine) die October 2011. The move to Server 2008 was the only option until I found Server 2011 Small Business Essentials. Never again will I allow core equipment to become more than 3 years old. Many of the programs that were compatible with Server 2003 (not talking ATX here) were not compatible with the Server 2011 software. Database program, schedule program etc... Living dangerously with old equipment and OS and ATX2012, before all is said and done, will probably not be so nice to the old OS.
  7. I have gone strictly check/cash & carry. No tickie no laundry.... Solved that problem quickly.
  8. When is a joke really not a joke A guy stopped at a local gas station, and after filling his tank, paid the bill and bought a soft drink. He stood by his car to drink his cola and watched a couple of men working along the roadside. ... One man would dig a hole two or three feet deep and then move on. The other man came along behind him and filled in the hole. While one was digging a new hole, the other was 25 feet behind filling in the hole. The men worked right past the guy with the soft drink and went on down the road. "I can't stand this" said the man tossing the can into a trash container and headed down the road toward the men. "Hold it, hold it," he said to the men. "Can you tell me what's going on here with all this digging and refilling?" "Well, we work for the government and we're just doing our job," one of the men said. "But one of you is digging a hole and the other fills it up. You're not accomplishing anything. Aren't you wasting the taxpayers' money?" "You don't understand, mister," one of the men said, leaning on his shovel and wiping his brow. "Normally there's three of us: me, Elmer and Leroy. I dig the hole, Elmer sticks in the tree, and Leroy here puts the dirt back........ Elmer's job's got cut ........ so now it's just me an' Leroy.
  9. You gotta love the way they are keeping their technical staff informed!!!
  10. Technician I talked to yesterday said that 12.10 was to be released today. However, I have seen information to the contrary. Does anyone have straight information about it? Not keeping the telephone technical service people informed about such things, CCH Corporate Administration at its finest!!
  11. Are you on a domain server and workstations? Did you have the same issue? I tried that process. NO GO. We recreated all by hand.
  12. I want to hear from someone running a domain server and workstations that is NOT having any problems. I believe that person does not exist. 5 more hours on hold, 2 hours with the tech, and not a bit better. I did learn how to clean up the scat that the program produces when the program crashes with a return open. It corrupts information in the back-up file. Nice, huh.... Told the technician that I could assure him I will not need to call him next year.
  13. A true server is a computer with server software installed. Ususally entails a domain and the workstations all log on to the server when booted. The other option is just a peer-to-peer network.
  14. I have spent 10 hours following the prescribed procedure and it has created problems. 125 returns not recovered into the newly installed program, after 3 hours of synchronizing e-file status, 80 percent of them have no status. DO NOT REMOVE AND REINSTALL
  15. I have spent 10 hours following the prescribed procedure and it has created problems. 125 returns not recovered into the newly installed program, after 3 hours of synchronizing e-file status, 80 percent of them have no status. DO NOT REMOVE AND REINSTALL
  16. I was told that they released 1,000 copies of the new software in October... From a technician...
  17. Left the office at 10:00 PM. Back here at 6:00AM. Could not restore 125 clients. Still trying to synchronize efiles. Double entries for every efile. I won't post these procedures yet, as I am not sure they have made anything better, and the possiblilty of having to recreate from scratch 125 more returns makes me sick to my stomach. Did I hear a rumor of a class action lawsuit???
  18. Ours is March 25. There will be NO EXCEPTIONS this year!!!
  19. Restoring at the average rate of one client every 42 seconds. 837 clients = 35,154 seconds = 586 minutes = Gonna be a long night....
  20. At this point, I have reinstalled on the server and two workstations. I have done all updates of the program and the forms. Currtently, restoring my client files from the back-up. Film at 11:00
  21. Phone call this past Friday... "I am a civil service employee at the local Air Force Base. If this sequestration happens and I am furloughed, can I deduct the pay we lose on my taxes?"
  22. I am currently at the firm. I am following the instructions of the tech I spoke to. I am totally removing the program from the server and all work stations. I will follow his instructions for re-installing and restoring all 878 clients we currently have in the system. I may be here a few hours, but when I am finished, I will post my experiences whether it helps or not. If it helps, I will post the information in detail for those of you using a network. None of what I am doing will be relevant for a single computer install, or a peer-to-peer installation.
