Preparing State Return From IRS Transcript
Jack from Ohio replied to GeneInAlabama's topic in General Chat
Ohio does not receive copies of W-2 forms. Your process does not work here. The State sends a notice asking for a copy of the W-2. It is the same for School District and Municipal taxes. Here in Ohio, you gotta have the W-2 or you lose. -
It's Amazing Some Clients' Capacity for Imagination

I see an increased income opportunity... -
Yes, if he is otherwise eligible. However, very few students at age 24 receive AOTC. No refundable portion to the other 2 credits.

When filing the FAFSA, if the child is under 24, he MUST include his parent's income and information as part of the FAFSA. He is NOT eligible to claim himself or any education credits unless he can prove that HE HIMSELF provides at least 51% of his own livelihood. (not likely) Students, parents and untrained financial aid people at the college try this dodge all the time. Amend the child's return. Amend the parent's return to claim him as a dependent and claim any education credits they are eligible for. I deal with this at least 25 times a year. The financial aid department of most colleges are inept, untrained, and unmotivated to learn about what they are supposed to do.
-
It must be a dependent child.
-
You are correct. Dependent is gone. Age and income. If there are any education credits, the student can claim them.

Client did a back door Roth contribution of $6,500. He did the back door method due to high income. He is over 60. Can he do the same thing next year? I seem to remember there being some limit to the number of times that non-deductible IRA contributions can be converted to ROTH. However, I cannot find any information limiting the number of times this type of conversion is allowed. Anyone have info that would help would be appreciated.

I received one too! Had to look at it three times to be sure, and ask two of my co-workers if it really was that way!!!

Everyone is overthinking this. Should have been W-2. Since it was not, Schedule C or C-EZ subject to SE. All the other chatter is simply trying to avoid SE. I guarantee you this is the way an auditor would rule.

This is why I learn the innermost workings of the program so I can do the necessary repairs when something goes wrong. The very rare times I call, I quiz the technician (after I have been quite the A _ _ to finally get connected to a REAL technician) about every little thing I have experienced. I HATED Drake. Did a dual year in 2013 where I had both Drake and ATX. Drake may be good for people who only want to input data to workpages, but I found it absolutely horrible to try to investigate any issue that came up during preparation. Speed of input is not the end all of choosing tax software.

will a return filed today supercede a return from last week
Jack from Ohio replied to michaelmars's topic in General Chat
Bouncing an agreed payment will only trigger fees and interest. I would not recommend that course of action. This should have been thought out and discussed BEFORE filing the return. -
Must be at least a half time student for 5 months in a calendar year. NO
-
Absolutely correct. Also, ATX will charge you $5 for each prior year you e-file.

The sad thing is that 1 out of 7 people that receive those e-mails respond and either get hacked or send the crooks money. It is a very lucrative operation.

I have functioning 2006 thru 2016 on 8 WIN7 workstations. We have a dedicated server and all years, back to 2002 work fine. 2002 thru 2005 reside on a WINXP machine. You need to call tech support and be taught how to load those older programs. First rule, do NOT use the CD!!
-
Reboot and then call tech support. You have more than one issue.

Autosave is supposed to do that WITHOUT input from me. It is a feature of the software that we should be able to depend upon. It is not. Autosave DOES NOT WORK. It has not worked since 2012.
