Rita, You greatly underestimate your value and worth as a tax professional! I had the same fears as you express before I made major increases in my price schedule starting with 2013 tax year. My prices are now 33% higher than 2012. Lost 3% of my clients, make 30% more income and retained 225 clients. I have already gained 5 new clients for tax year 2015. None of them batted an eye at my pricing structure. You are worth FAR MORE than you charge.

I use e-mail with .pdf files. The risk of using this method has the same basis as man-made global warming and the Y2K catastrophe. I am still waiting for a single example of someone intercepting and e-mail and extracting a file from it.

Does anyone use an alternative location for data and/or backup?
Jack from Ohio replied to Abby Normal's topic in General Chat
LEAVE THE DEFAULT ORIGINAL PROGRAM INSALLATION FILE LOCATIONS ALONE! This is from a knowledgeable (I wish I had his name) experienced tech support person as well as my personal investigation. LEAVE THE LOCATIONS ALONE!! -
Just put the current address on the 1040 and any State returns. No other action needed.

Over the past 3 seasons, I have raised by base fees by 33%. I have lost 6 customers, kept 225 and make a lot more money for the same work.

If he lives inside the city limits of a taxing city, he owes city tax on all his earnings no matter where he earned them. If he worked in other taxing cities in Ohio, he will also owe those cities tax on the amount he earned in that city. For tax year 2016, these rules are entirely more complex and stringent.

If she has not lived with him for the last 6 months of the year, she can file single or HOH if she had a qualified child. Under the heading of filing status, check the rules for "considered unmarried" to find this. This has been in place for many years. Must be 6 full months and not one single night of being together during the 6 months.

Jack from Ohio replied to Naveen Mohan from New York's topic in General Chat
On the top of the NY Efile page, there is a checkbox to unlink from the Federal. -
Not only reasonable, but quite common.

We amended three years prior returns claiming EIC. After about 6 months, clients had received all the refunds. -
Student Loan Interest & Obama Forgiveness Program
Jack from Ohio replied to peggysioux5's topic in General Chat
I was not aware that an "Obama's Student Loan Forgiveness Program" was even in existence? This doesn't pass the smell test. Am I just uninformed, or do others get the feeling this is not a legit program? -
I got the message in an e-mail. I knew it was spam after the first three words in the title.

Large extra fees!! Make it worth your time. On the invoice/receipt, list the additional charge as "Babysittng 1099B."

I do the same thing.

Like gullible sheep and get fleeced. Scammers keep doing those things because they work. Until I find a pill that restores or imparts common sense, we will keep hearing about people being ripped off by their own actions.

I have a 4-in-1 machine. Second "distinctive ring" phone number on my main phone line ($10/mo.). I have a MagicJack second phone line ($23/year unlimited) that I use when things get busy. This has worked for me for 7 years now and the 4-in-one machine is still cranking along! Cost per page of printing, not including the paper, is $.002 page. Not changing anything till this machine dies. 7 years (I think that is 70 printer years) and going great.

The 1099-C will only be issued AFTER the lending institution clears the debt from their books. I have seen this be as much as 3 years. When the debt was forgiven is not the date that matters. I have dealt with this issue several times. The client is at the mercy of the bookkeeping practices of the lending institution.
