He will have to amend WI also, but it's not a huge deal here. If I can help, just let me know.

All of their community property issues would have been settled in court at the time of the divorce.

Personally, I have never seen the "splitting of income" done for several years. Generally they agree at the time of divorce to each file their own. While looking through my Wisconsin Tax Guide for you, I come across the following tip: TIP: Since the splitting of income and deductions can be quite complex and time-consuming, it may be beneficial for spouses filing separately "not to notify" each other. According to what I have been reading, the splitting of income in a marital property state starts at the Federal level and carries over to the state return. I just have not seen one of those worksheets for years, as I said. The fact that she released the dependent exemptions to him indicates to me that her intent is to file her own and he is to file his own. Much simpler that way. Perhaps someone else from "any" community property state would like to chime in here.

File the return and go out and smell your roses.

Kind of like the no penalty on an inherited IRA??? He surely shouldn't have to pay SE tax on it.
-
I hope I have mine started next week and finished at least by June. Is probably one of the most complicated that I prepare.
-
had another one last night. Took $10 K out of retirement to pay for a camping trailer; no tax withheld. "But, I thought you didn't have to pay taxes on SS". So, now they will pay 15% tax on this money when they could have taken out a loan for 5 or 6% and deducted the interest as they are able to itemize. They will also pay tax on 23 K of SS. I told my husband that I wish some of these people would go somewhere else. And, why do they wait until the last week?......because they know they are going to have to pay, but then they try to make it sound like it is the preparer's fault. UGH! End of vent......back to work on the clients who appreciate me.
-
Then I had one yesterday who said he was coming in the morning and drove in just as we were getting in the car to go out to dinner for my husband's birthday. Did I go back in the house and give him his return? NOPE!!! Also had a two time scheduled former client never show up and one new one that never showed. Like the rest of you; their loss is my gain as I will be right down to the wire this year and I have been working long hours every day since the second week in Jan. Lots of odd stuff this year.
-
Same arguement every year with someone. I had to tell a client this morning that it doesn't matter if you are 90, if you have too much income, your SS will be taxed proportionately.

Close the return, close the program. Restart the computer and try again. Sometimes at this time of year, the program, the computers and we start suffering from overload. We all need to "refresh". Good luck.

You are right about that, but not the case here. I have a client who installed solar panels for her business this year. Many thousands. The credit calculated on two different forms would have been over $7000, but she couldn't take it because she had no tax liability other than SE tax to credit it against. On the other hand, when I entered the solar panels on her asset depreciation worksheet; the minute I clicked on solar panels, the schedule automatically subtracted the $7000 plus from the basis. She could have carried the credit forward until used up., but went through some process wherein she is getting the credit right from the govt. As long as she was willing to do that paperwork and I didn't have to get involved, all is well. She did also get state grants, BUT, they have to be added in as income since she is deducting the cost of the panels. Seems as though they are trying to close some of those tax double-dipping laws. (I realise that this has nothing to do with the minimal cost of windows and doors, but since you brought up the subject.......)
-
The business gets to deduct the entire cost of the windows and doors. Adding a credit would be double dipping.
-
Are you doing it on the bottom of the 1040, page 2 or in the estimate worksheet? I have done many of these this year with no problem. 1040, page 2, line 75. The other thousand will stay on line 74a.

Enter the full amount of the Health Insurance on the top of the SE. If he doesn't owe any SE Tax, then just delete the SE Form to make it e-file.

Julie, so glad nobody was hurt. Under those circumstances, was a good thing that you were there. -
FYI......Accountant just faxed over the corrected K-1s for my client showing the SE losses in Box 14. Just goes to show "Don't believe everything you read!" and/or "When in doubt, ASK!"

I am getting both the plastic sleeves with the string that winds around and around the little thingies to make it really secure; and the Walmart bags which they wind around the doorknob even though I have two perfectly good drop boxes placed stragecially near the front door. I really think that I am losing my mind. Just received an answer to an e-mail from a client who said that she forgot to give me her Ameritrade papers. I told her I needed to see them in case there were any dividends. Her e-mail this moring said "These are STOCKS, I don't know what you mean by dividends!" I think it's Sunday, but I really, really think that I am losing my mind. This has been the strangest year ever and they are still coming in. Guess who hasn't even started her own return yet. I read EXTENSION on the wall for many. -
Generally they didn't get any in 2010. A very few had a hangover distribution from 2009, received in 2010.
-
Just checking "Final Return" is enough for them. However I did have them call once but that was because nobody had noticed the checkmark in the box. The agent apologized profusely.

$3.89 in Central WI...I do walk to work, from the bedroom to the kitchen to the office. My Jeep (not gentle on gas) rarely leaves the garage.; other than for groceries.

Energy efficient appliance purchasers get their rebate from the manufacturer.....if there is a rebate deal going on.

I have one of those "light" ones in now and it has been plugging away since 03/18/11. Every day I expect it to die, but so far not. I always put a sticky note on the printer with the date that I changed the toner. Also have a backup laser printer loaded and ready to go just in case. (And, yes, they are both attached with wires. Like Catherine, I am wired to the hilt).....in more ways than one.
-
It makes sense that that would be the case since you have already taken accelerated depreciation. One of those things that you don't think of when you put the gravy on the potatoes. I try to never take that extra stuff unless the client really needs the deduction. Especially now days with so many businesses failing on their own without having to pay back recapture.

OMG Rita, it has been one of those years. Rule of thumb, take one out of the box, immediately order a new one. I am nearly totally trashed., so am not surprised to see that others are doing odd stuff too.
