  1. I would think they would be taxable to CA. If you live in WI and win in another state, they are taxable to WI.

    1099-R

You have to put the $4945 in 14a. Same scenario as above; will not change WI taxable income.

    1099-R

That could be a big "Ouch" if you are referring to the same 1099R. If the question is general, all you can do is put the numbers in and the client will have to pay the tax owed to Fed. That would be a very unusual scenario as most often there is Fed tax withheld and no State. Also, be sure to take special note of the coding and enter it correctly on the 1099R worksheet. Good Luck!

    1099-R

I am in WI and they often leave the state distribution out. It won't change the state income because that flows from the Federal. Put the amount of the Fed distribution in the box for the State. That will credit the client for the state tax withheld.
  5. Once again, be careful what you ask for. I have used this software (or versions thereof) since 1996. I am comfortable, happy and supportive of it. If I need a newer and faster computer, that is my problem, not theirs. As in everything, there are kinks, but sometimes fixing the complaints of few makes it worse for the many.
  6. Since I work at home, have found that unplugging the phone at 8 PM is working wonders. That allows me to get a couple of returns into some kind of shape before I snuggle in with a good book. I am being deluged like the rest of you. Remember last year when anything other than a simple form couldn't be filed before Feb 17.
  7. Mine has been surprisingly fast this year considering that my computer is an 03 Model. I don't have the program set to update itself; do that myself two or three times a day. The only time I notice having to wait is the FIRST time that I open a rolled over return. Other than that, downloads, transmissions and getting acks is really fast.

    My ATX

I had to delete cookies and history twice last week in order to get in. This week, am not having a problem. You also have to delete temp files and uncheck the box at the top of the Delete Settings which says Preserve Favorite Sites. I hate it cuz I have so many passwords, but it did work and, as I said, am not having any trouble now.
  9. You open the 2010 Program, open the client, select New Forms and choose Organizer. I just type ORG into the Search box and it takes you to the options. You can choose either 2010 or 2011; and you can choose Comprehensive or Regular Organizer. Sometimes I load them both and then pick and choose pages that I want from each. Then print the Org from the 2010 program. This has been one of the nicest features of ATX since the very beginning. Lets you get your Organizers printed and ready long before the New Program is released.
  10. Make sure to open the Organizer for 2011 in the 2010 Program.
  11. AMEN to that.
  12. I deduct it in the year of purchase. For all intents and purposes; it is "used up" each tax year. I use cash method acctg for my business and clearly list it on the Sch C as Tax Prep Software.
  13. Quickfinders P. 14-6 Defined benefit plan. "An employee is considered an active participant if he is eligible to participate for the plan year that ends within the employee's tax year This is true even if the employee declines to be covered by the plan, did not make contributions or did not perform the minimum service required to accrue a benefit for the plan year. There is no de minimus exception to the active participatint rules. An employee can be considered an active participant in a plan no matter how small the employee's accrued benefit in the plan. So, I would say that your client does not qualify on both counts....the retirement plan and the total agi over the limit.
  14. I have a client who received his DD refund yesterday, which is a Wed and therefore follows the projected dates in the refund schedule. This is the only one I have heard from.

    EIC

But she does get the Child Tax Credit if they are under 17. No EIC.......
  16. In any case, it sure beats having to shovel off the roof. We are very happy with the steel. It looks nice and will last as long as we do.
  17. I keep a shovel next to the front door. Sometimes the clients grab it and "help out". Snow is not as much a worry this year as ice. We put a new steel roof on last fall and as the snow melts, you guessed it. Kerrrrrrrploppppp a pile of snow lands on the front porch. Have to complain about something, but sure loving the weather.
  18. It's 37 degrees here in Central WI at 6 PM. All day clients have been coming in and telling me how nice it is outside. Just makes you want to cry. We have snow on the ground, but disappearing fast. Hoping for an early Spring, but then the problem will be "no moisture"!
  19. Highly Unlikely....in my opinion.
  20. The Partners will receive a K-1. To whom would they be issuing 1099s?

    My ATX

Many of us are wondering the same thing. According to her profile, she has not been active here since June 10. I know that last year she was going through some health issues with her husband. She is, and will be, greatly missed by most of us here. Any insight as to whether or not she will be back would be welcomed.
  22. You'll waste more time trying to do it the "new" way than if you just continue to do it the way we were taught. Even being left-handed, after 8 years in parochial school, I learned penmanship, cursive and typing and am shocked at some of the writing that I see. Last week they had an article in our local paper on the subject of young people really forgetting how to spell since the texting rage came in. The tend to write their school papers in the texting shorthand.
  23. Install the 2010 Software on the new computer and update. Export the files you want from the 2010 Program Manager page under File, onto a jump drive. Then import them into the 2010 program on the new computer. Again, under File in the Program Manager.

    Paper

I always look for 20# and the most inexpensive. you might try www.officemax.com. They run online specials and free delivery. Sometimes buy one get one free is way cheaper than Sams Club. Living in paper mill country, I have a few clients who bring me a ream of the better stuff that I use like the rest of you for letterhead, etc. However, if I didn't have it, I wouldn't miss it. The Boise 20# is really very nice paper. I also use "mistakes" to print on the back side for my copy of things.
  25. The WI 1099G show the repaid overpayments. But, I have had situations where clients were collecting for one or two weeks at the end of the year and did not receive a 1099G until the following year because that is when the benefits were actually paid.
