  1. These situations waste more time and cause more confusion than almost any other. The exemption isn't what it used to be and HOH can be worthless if the parent makes too much money. As in any tax situation, it all depends on the numbers. In so many cases, they are living together anyway and are willing to perjure themselves for the sake of a larger refund. Therefore, the Due Diligence burden falls on our shoulders.
  2. If you file just HOH, you have to enter the ITIN of the person who qualifies you for HOH even if not your dependent. Hence, same ITIN will be on both returns.
  3. Why do people do things like that when we are doing everything we can to help them.? I would say that losing this client is worth losing a client. Our overhead continues to snowball.
  4. Each of my active computers has two external backup hard drives, used alternately, stored at a different location. My password books are also off site. We try as hard as we can to protect our information. No, have never had anything stolen as of yet. My worst catastrophe to date was a battery blowup on a laptop and to this day that laptop is still working. I gave it to my IT man who pried the battery out of the half melted machine and he still has it running.
  5. I know some people (not many) who are running their desktop from a tablet. Either use wireless hardware or get a USB splitter that will accommodate several plugins. Hence, the value of using a Surface, as Margaret said. You can do as little or as much as you want. Pretty much any scenario is possible. My problem is that when we added on my office addition, we should have gone BIGGER. My assistant brought this home when she mentioned the other day that she wished she had more room on her desk.
  6. And, whose fault is that? Generally, if I ever need support, I just call my Sales Rep and she gets me to someone. With this board, however, that is very seldom.
  7. I use a 17" Acer laptop with the pointer turned off and use the keyboard. This is not my main computer, BUT, could be. Any bookwork or returns prepared on the laptop are exported to a jump drive and imported into my desktop for revue and filing. Even with my diagnosis of Macular Degeneration; I don't, as yet, have a problem with the 17" screen and it is running Windows 11. I could add another monitor if I had the room. I also would need to get a wireless printer, but there is no need at this point. Each computer in my office has its own printer at the moment. Good luck with whichever way you choose to go. Generally, I believe that if I want to do something, such as tax prep, I will find a way to do it. So far, I haven't let age or left-handedness hold me back.
  8. Thank you Lee. We will move forward with this information.
  9. It has been pretty apparent that when the IRS does correct a return; their explanation of correction is slim to none. This particular client has been threatening to call his Senator or Rep. I will tell him to go ahead and do it. Thanks to all of you. This situation has been a really sore subject this year as I also prepare this client's Sales Tax returns and have some of his bookkeeping on my computer. He also has a short fuse and isn't the best at keeping records,, but we have worked with him for many years and have him doing his bookkeeping on Quicken; which is an extreme advantage. He is retired County Law Enforcement.
  10. I have at least one major client who has not received his e-filed 2022 refund yet. Notation on website says "Pending" Telephone calls say "Pending". Neither the client nor I have been able to speak with an actual live person as of up to yesterday. Please advise.
  11. Because I, personally, have the same situation, I agree with all of the above. Mine are both in the same state and the older we get, the more time we spend at the second home. However, our mail, our drivers licenses, our voting rights, our property tax credit, etc are all at the main (original) home. This is also where I maintain my main office and there has never been any doubt in my mind. In case of a sale, this would be the house that qualifies for the CG credit.; even though either one possibly could.

    ptin renewal

Follow Lee's instructions. It shouldn't be a problem as we can't file until around the 24th anyway. Take a deep breath; read the directions slowly and do as instructed.
  13. Wishing you all a Happy, Healthy and Comfortable New Year and New Tax Season. May we all continue to prosper and be of some value to each other.
  14. You can create them on the Payroll portion of the Max Program.
  15. Bear in mind that there are some who don't back up anything. Worse yet, are the clients who keep everything, including banking and business bookkeeping on their phones. They make me shiver and cringe.
  16. I have found Texting and Messaging to be the biggest waste of time that I have ever encountered in all the years of doing tax prep. Second to that is e-mailing, but sometimes that has some value.
  17. Yes.......I have always believed that you cannot have too many backups.
  18. A Merry and Blessed Christmas wish to all of you who do so much to help me limp through continuing tax seasons. My appreciation knows no bounds.
  19. I use EaseUS to do Backup; backing up entire system to alternating external harddrives at specific times. Harddrives are kept in a safe. Each computer has its own set of backup drives. At the same time, ATX clients are backed up religiously and on the go to jump drives that we can pass back and forth.
  20. Depreciation equals allowed or allowable; which everyone seems to realize. These seem to be coming up fairly frequently lately; perhaps because of the housing market. Did you set up a depreciation schedule for him ten years ago, when he first came to you? I would consider all aspects when deciding on the pricing.
  21. I gave a little speech this year right before we prayed. Since my youngest Grandson and his wife just bought their first home and the entire family that my husband and I are the heads of, were here. I pointed out how thankful we are and how proud we are of all of them. I said that we were very thankful for the life we have built together over 64 years of marriage and hope that they all take something away from our example. However, this Great-Grandma is getting tired and it may soon be time to pass the torch. Since I don't have a daughter, they will have to figure that out. When I heard my Grandson say "Nobody's dressing tastes like Grandma's", my heart swelled. I am certainly not giving up on life or the work that I do in this office. It was just time to contemplate! And, then we prayed!

    Thank You

The day after is a REALLY great day for the cook!!!
  23. I always have issues logging in as well; to the point where I want to scream. Today I tried to stay calm. Once in, installation went very smoothly and quickly. I am still using 10 for ATX.
