  1. This was in no way meant to encourage anyone to try to operate ATX on an XP machine. However, there are millions of XP computers out there that are perfectly useful for many things and this only means that the operators will still have a measure of security when they go online. (I think!)
  2. Child under 18 employed by parent is exempt from FICA and FUTA Child under 21 employed by parent is exempt from FUTA but not FICA
  3. I believe it gets amortized for 15 years from the date he actually started doing business.
  4. When we adopted our Annie, the Calico Cat, she was already marked down to sale price of $75. When I first saw her, she was $100. You all know where she was headed. Six years later, she is the most arrogant, spoiled and sophisticated cat we have ever had. She needed us and we needed her. We wouldn't take a million bucks for her now. She can be a "real baby" when she wants something. End of story. I would never have even considered deducting the adoption fee.; nor should you.
  5. How many of you are aware that Microsoft has extended updates for XP security products until July 14, 2015. I first read it in a short news blip. Yesterday, I did a search for Microsoft Windows XP updates and have a 3 page printout in hand. They are not going to support or update the OS, but will continue to update Security Essentials and other security products for an additional 15 months. (All of this just after my XP computer decided to take a long nap and my IT person is out of town). Amazing how you miss what you weren't using anyway.! Anyhow, just search for Windows XP updates and you can read all about it.
  6. This is the first time I have ever heard - who needs QB? from anyone other than myself. I use Quicken for all small businesses; and some not so small. If they want to use QB on their own, they bring me in the printouts. The final numbers are what counts. I like to keep it simple as possible.
  7. Chapter two: Because Jack's flight home got cancelled due to weather; I got to spend a day and a half with him after he left WITAXLADY. I am about thirty miles away from her and close to the airport. We had planned on visiting for a few hours before he had to fly out. Instead, he was grounded. He then spent half a day in my office just talking and fine tuning. The following day, my husband and I took him on a tour of the Northern half of the state. We were both extremely impressed with Jack's knowledge, professionalism and downright great personality. We got to enjoy two meals with him before getting him back to the airport for his (again delayed) flight. However, he did have to enjoy the airport for a while, but eventually got home all right. The moral of the story is; if you have a question about ATX, ask Jack. Don't intimidate him, but trust him. I didn't have serious issues such as DE experienced, but I can recognize intelligence when I see it; and Jack has done, and will do, more for the users of ATX than you can imagine. I have been in touch with him throughout the beta testing and going forward. Jack never fails to return a PM. Thanks, Guy!!
  8. I used to take it off, but it seems the last few years, it has not been that easy so I just leave it on. After all, I AM preparing the return.
  9. I have Sch C clients who NEVER balance their checkbooks. I am certainly not going to take that extra work upon myself. They give me the numbers, they sign the engagement letter and the return. I think their bank account is their business. Their income and expenses are mine to the extent that they give it to me; however they arrived at it. I am talking about very long-term clients. I would not be that comfortable with a new client and would need to see P&L and or Balance Sheet.
  10. We use Team Viewer. So does ATX.
  11. You have to download a separate limited module to do that. I have never used it. I print the reports from Medlin and then generate the reporting forms through ATX Payroll. Just seems easier that way.
  12. I use Medlin for only one client who has Payroll. Don't have any more left, but, yes, I like that little program. I nearly didn't renew until he told me he would have payroll workers again this year. He is a laborer with no benefits so generally it is one or two payroll employees at a time; but several throughout the year. Medlin is worth that kind of hassle. ATX for taxes and payroll reports and a very simple version of Quicken (not QuickBooks) for Accounting. Keeping it simple meets my needs as well as my income.
  13. I am just going to mail mine. I don't have that many. If they can't figure out a better system, they can open some mail.
  14. www.tenenz.com also has them for different software as well as general two up W2s and 1099s.
  15. I have not left IE 10; for all of the above reasons. I also understand that there are some issues with Java updates and I have been advised not to update Java. ???????? More confusion to mull over. I am having no problems with any programs other than my e-mail and that only happened after ATX tech used team viewer to get the beta software to work on this computer. Other two computers are working fine. I know they changed some settings; just wish I knew which ones.
  16. I have always used the Uni-forms from ATX and the envelopes that go with them. Of course, I don't do a lot of payroll so one order is lasting me a long time.
  17. I stand corrected. Had a senior moment there.
  18. First you have to install 2012 on the new computer. I recommend that you download it from the web page. Then you import your returns into the 2012 program. Install the 2013 program to new computer following directions carefully. Open 2013 and import your returns into the 2013 program.

I also fine "Print Page" a handy tool for specific jobs.
  20. On the rare occasion when I do have to e-file from my laptop at a different location; I set the DCN counter on the laptop to start at 500 so there will be no repeat DCNs. I prefer to export the return to jump drive; take home and import and e-file from the desktop there, but every once in a while I have had to use this method. E-filing an extension at the second location and at the last minute, comes to mind.
  21. WE have a neighbor lady whose husband passed away a few years ago. My guys keep her plowed out and keep her car serviced and washed. She brings a lot of hot dishes during tax season; sometimes even a whole pie. She isn't even a client of mine but we loved her husband; just as we love her. Some people are blessings in disguise.
  22. I read that too, but wonder how many people will. I just hate for kids to rush out to file their returns and mess up their parents by claiming an exemption for themselves even though they shouldn't.
  23. One valuable plus to OIH is the ability to give solace to the "nap attack". I found out last year that the older I get, the more I need it and the more productive it makes me. Depending on the schedule and, certainly, not every day, I can lock the door, shut off the phone and take a nap. Not being much of a TV person, I find the evenings work well for high end and accurate tax preparation. I don't stay up half the night either. I need to sleep if I want to work. I also need to eat, but that can get pretty erratic at times.
  24. Got an e-mail back this morning. ("Oh, just forget it! I will go somewhere else!") She sure put me in my place.
