  1. I just went to import the K-1 data from the partnership return I prepared earlier today into the partner's individual return and the link is grayed out and inactive. I've done several of these imports already this year but I think this is the first one I've tried to do since installing the 12.10 update. Anyone else having trouble with this, or know of a solution?
  2. Bump! I'm probably over thinking this but I could really use some input. Thanks!
  3. I am loving the new print manager as well. It is a big time saver to be able to print both paper copies and pdf copies at the same time. I am not having problems with anything printing that I didn't ask to print unless I forget to uncheck some of the boxes. The one thing that frustrates me is that I wish I could figure out how to keep the "federal attachments for state" from being checked on every return.
  4. After installing the 12.10 update many (not all) of my completed returns were unchecked. I re-checked them all and they remained checked the next time I opened the program. I have had no problems printing letters and the "print page" icon is working properly.
  5. I installed it this afternoon on my stand alone system. So far I have had no problems. Opening returns is somewhat faster and I haven't had any crashes since the update. All in all, it seems much more stable. Keeping my fingers crossed.....
  6. I am preparing a partnership return for a law firm. One of the partners passed away in February of 2012. He had earned fees prior to his death and the remaining partners have agreed to split fees that come in on his ongoing cases equally between the deceased partner's estate and the partner who took over the case at his death. Obviously, this situation could continue for at least a few years until all of the cases that were ongoing at the time of his death are finalized. How would you guys handle this situation both for 2012 and for the years to come?
  7. I charge by the hour for these as well. My time is too valuable to just give it away for a flat fee.
  8. I don't really get that much either except from clients who will sometimes call and say, "I think my income is up/down by $x. How do you think this will affect me?" Most of my clients have been with me 15-20 years or more so in these cases I am familiar enough with their situations and have a good enough relationship with them that I am comfortable giving them an idea of what to expect. I've led a pretty sheltered tax preparation life. Prior to the 2011 filing season I prepared taxes through a local attorney's office for 25 years. They did not allow me to advertise so any new business I got was from word of mouth and client referrals. However, now that I am out on my own, advertising for new clients, I am constantly getting calls wanting to know how much I charge. I always tell them that my fees are based on the complexity of their return. I will have them tell me what forms they ususally file or what sources of income/expenses they have and then I will try to quote a fee based on their answers. What I am finding out with most of these though is that when the rubber meets the road there is usually always more to the return than what I based my quote on. I guess I either just need to start tacking on a little padding to my fee quote or just stop quoting all together. It has been a real eye-opener. Having had an established client base, most of whom have been with me for as long as I have been preparing taxes and who I consider friends, it has been difficult to get used to being lied to and taken advantage of by a few less than honest taxpayers.
  9. Waiting anxiously, and I do mean anxiously. I've been one of the lucky ones to experience very few problems so it makes me nervous every time a new update comes around. Updating your software should NOT cause nausea. Just sayin...
  10. If you click on the "pages and worksheets" tab at the bottom of the open return you will see the "where to file" link.
  11. Printing time is good now but wait time on opening a return is still long. I can't have two returns open at once at this point due to "low resources."
  12. Sorry for your loss, Joan. It's never easy to lose a pet.
  13. Glad to hear everything went well, KC. Wishing you all the best!
  14. First week of March is all anyone has been told at this point. An email I received this morning stated that "The IRS indicated that a more specific date is expected to be announced as soon as possible."
  15. Thanks everyone! I will try submitting it with the zeroes and only the withholding/refund showing on page 2 and see if that works. Keep your fingers crossed......
  16. The withholding is showing but lines 13 thru 18 are blank. The worksheets show the figures for prorated standard deduction and exemption but the figures from the worksheets aren't flowing to the return. I tried manually overriding the zeroes on the form itself to show the correct figures, but the efile rejects.
  17. Their VA AGI is $14,869 which I know is below the the filing threshold but they had in excess of $500 withheld that needs to be refunded.
  18. Thanks, Jack. I believed that to be the case. I think she has always been willing to abide by the terms of the divorce agreement that they both signed so long as he was paying child support, but now that the child support has stopped coming she is trough playing nice.
  19. I have a young couple who moved from Virginia to Kentucky in May of 2012. I have completed the Federal and Kentucky PY returns with no probem but I cannot get the Virginia Form 760PY to calculate. I completed the Schedule of Income and the software populates the first page of the form with the correct numbers to arrive at Virginia Adusted Gross Income but the 2nd page of the return shows zeroes. The worksheets for the prorated standard deduction and exemption are properly calculated but the figures aren't flowing from the worksheets to the return itself. What am I doing wrong?
  20. What version of ATX are you running? Mine did that until I installed the 12.9 update. Once I installed it the return opened fine and I was able to fix the reason for the reject and re-submit without any trouble.
  21. I don't believe you have to submit a fingerprint card with your EFIN application if you are a CPA or attorney. You just have to submit proof that you have been admitted to the bar or whatever.
  22. Female taxpayer has a daughter who is a full-time student and lives with her. Daughter turned 18 in 2012. Pursuant to divorce decree taxpayer's ex was to pay child support until their daughter reached the age of 18 and he was entitled to claim the dependency exemption. Now taxpayer wants to know if she can claim her daughter since her ex no longer has any child support obligation. What do you guys think?
  23. The state of Kentucky requires a copy of the Federal Form 4562 to be attached to the Kentucky e-file. Everytime I attempt to print the 4562 to PDF so I can attach it it says "0 pages printed" and I get nothing. I've changed the print options on the 4562 to "always print" and I've changed my print packets preferences to "always" and still nothing. Anyone have any ideas?
  24. You should be able to file returns with depreciation now provided your program is updated to at least version 12.9
  25. Installed 12.9 and it has fixed both of the problems 12.8 caused for me. Payer manager is now working correctly and the one 4562 return that crashed the software everytime I tried to open it opened and allowed me to create and submit the efile. I am hopeful that ATX is on the right track....finally.
