  1. Federal extension was rejected for "Spouse SSN and the Name Control for the tax document must match the corresponding data in the IRS Master File." Now what? I have triple and quadruple-checked the name/SSN I have with the prior-year return. Wife did NOT change her name when she married and she got her ITIN years ago when here as a grad student. (Foreign couple; he's here on a visa, she and the kids are here as dependents, came here ~Sept 07; paper filing was accepted last year with no trouble but prior preparer never applied for ITIN's for the kids which is why the extension request this year.) Admittedly, they're getting a refund, but is there something more I should so here? Thanks! Catherine
  2. "Demo's" are frequently really personal use; she "bought" the stuff at cost if she uses it herself. "Quite a bit" as sales gifts -- how much? Sounds fishy -- get it clearly, in writing from her, so you don't get blamed for "mistakes" when they get the audit notice. And definitely don't file this one without getting paid first. Catherine
  3. Fix rejects up until the 20th, I believe. I've only had two extensions reject (and both came back fast), for name/SSN mismatch. One was a woman who changed her name and didn't tell the SSA, the other was a kid filing first time. Catherine

    Extensions

You're welcome! I've been doing a lot of these the last couple of days.... ;)

    Extensions

Yes, but you will need the client's bank routing number and account number. On the extension, go to the "efile info" tab. Scroll down to the extension bank information section and fill out. Check the "direct debit" box in the extension payment options just above. Catherine
  6. Durn tootin' get those priorities in line. Have a GREAT time with your daughter, and good luck to her in figuring out where she wants to go! Catherine
  7. That early? If we start to include the effects of unfunded mandates, unfunded entitlements, and deficits, the annual tax freedom day will be sometime about thirty years hence.
  8. Y'know, I don't really mind the same old procrastinators every year. I can depend on them being late, I know they'll extend, etc. And they know they procrastinate and don't try to blame me or pressure me for their lateness. Stretches out the season, and they're grateful that I don't fuss at them. The ones that drive me nuts and the ones that rush in just inside my "won't guarantee to finish if I don't have docs" deadline, then it turns out information is missing, and they stall on that while still pressuring me to finish. One lady called me on Easter Sunday (she was supposed to get the last docs to me by 4/2 drop-dead latest), and proceeded to harangue me for about a half hour over why she had to pay so much with an extension. Well, when your income just about doubles but you don't increase withholdings, surprise!! I was _very _ close to telling her to come get her stuff and get out of my way. She backed down about 20 seconds before the ultimatum.... she'll either be a really good client from now on, or the next time she fusses I fire her. Catherine
  9. Take a look at the912project.com, Eric, and don't give up hope -- or the ones who want to destroy this country will win. They need to be reminded that they work for us. What is irresponsible is the size of the government and the out of control spending. Scale it down to any company or individual -- if any of us had clients doing what the country is doing, we'd tell them flat out to cut spending. Stop the hemorrhaging first, and retrench. Tax cuts -- serious, deep, wide-ranging ones -- may be one thing that would force the spending cuts; congresscritters would be able to "lay blame" instead of taking responsibility. Lack of responsibility (personal, corporate, national), needing to pay off the special interests, and ignoring the Constitution are roads to ruin.
  10. Got an email just now, from someone asking if I can tell them how to check on the status of their refund due from the paper-filed 1045 that they sent in ABOUT TWO WEEKS AGO!!!! Think I'll just drop EVERYTHING and go research that one! Whaddya think? Quarter past one and I haven't had _lunch_ yet, when breakfast was one slice of toast at 6:30AM. Maybe the bad mood is partially lack of food.... Catherine
  11. I guess the thing I've been saying most often is "No, you're not too late; I put you on extension two days ago." A couple of those folks might actually get filed by 4/15. But most won't, and now I don't have to worry about it! Catherine
  12. I'm just guessing here -- but if you e-file, and the bank account information given is for a "live" account, I don't see how it would _not_ be debited. Remember, my advice here is worth every penny you've paid for it! Catherine
  13. Happy Easter! And also wishing each of you your very favorite Easter creature -- peeps (yellow, blue, green, pink), chocolate bunny (milk, dark or white), chocolate eggs, creme eggs, whatever.
  14. I just tried this. If you undo the estimate tag, the other tags are protected IF THEY ARE EARLIER IN THE DETAIL LISTING. If they come later, the tag is lost. I wonder if this is actually a problem with the order the items come in? Catherine
  15. It's because we've back-burnered those returns....
  16. I play fiddle (or try to, anyway; don't scare the neighborhood animals much at least). There are several yahoo groups geared towards adult fiddle players. Tunes, techniques, questions, encouragement, instrument care, whatever. There are groups for just about any interest there is.
  17. Go to a field. Right-click. Top choice is "Mark As Estimate". Then when you error-check, you get a list of all estimated values.
  18. Usually there is a quarterly "maintenance fee" of which _part_ is RE taxes -- but frequently not spelled out as such. The "wear and tear" and management portions are nondeductible personal expenses -- but is you own/rent enough weeks, those would be rental expenses.
  19. I shouldn't think it would affect us here. But some of us use Yahoo Groups, as well, so those would be affected. I'm going to have SO many Yahoo fiddle group posting to plod through after next week...... haven't even peeked at them since early February!
  20. Sounds like, in that event, we'll have to seriously query the TaxWise users (and/or get demos for ourselves) and see who wants to use that format and who wants to jump to a product like Drake. I really _like_ the ATX forms-based format. Grrr!
  21. Thank you for posting this, KC.
  22. Thank you! It's hard to believe that there is even _one_ source of income that isn't taxed. When you have to report someone's raffle winnings of $25, to find a place where a couple of hundred gets ignored really makes you doubt that you're seeing it right. Catherine
  23. Client has a timeshare that they rent out. Only one week per year, and only a small amount of income (management company takes 40% as a fee; nice gig if you can get it). How do I report this? It falls under the "seven days or less" for passive rental activities. Does that mean Line 21? Or is it still Sch. E? Catherine
  24. Without my dear colleagues who help me so much, I think I'd end up taking up gardening instead. Because I surely couldn't do as good a job with taxes as I require of myself! Happy Birthday all of us, and thank you all!!!
