  1. Yes but we mostly use them to clip envelopes to payment vouchers. Gotta get those clients into using Direct Pay.

  2. While we're on the subject of unwanted paper, if any clients leave paper in your office that you don't want lying around, I'll volunteer to dispose of it. Especially if it's green in color and has pictures of presidents on it.

  3. Hubby called them late afternoon and kept them talking for a long time. We managed four calls to them from our four phones. Scum.

  4. I've done several of these and never has the IRS refused to waive the penalty. Be sure to tell them the missed distribution was taken as soon as it was remembered and steps have been taken to assure it will never happen again (automatic annual distribution). I believe the agency knows it isn't very popular with the public and doesn't want to be seen as taking money from little ole ladies, so it's quite forgiving with late RMDs.

  5. Aw, okay; you've got a point and I yield. If it saved $3K, then I'd Just curious, but are there any paper clips in your office? Regards, Pop

  7. Remember to also factor in the period of nonqualified use when calculating the gain eligible for exclusion under sec 121.

  8. The new automatic six-month extension affects taxpayers filing the following returns for tax years beginning after December 31, 2015. Form 990 Form 990-EZ Form 990-PF Form 990-T Form 990-BL Form 4720 Form 1041-A Form 5227 Form 6069 Form 8870

  9. I had a taxpayer a couple of years ago that did some workshops/seminars in Canada. They used her social security number on her Canadian form that reported her miscellaneous income. The number was divided into three equal parts (XXX-XXX-XXX) instead of 3-2-4 (XXX-XX-XXXX) but it was the same digits. Canada deducted the taxes directly that they wanted, but I told the client that I did not do Canadian returns if one was required. I don't think that she was required to file anything since the taxes were deducted directly.

  10. I think so. I haven't done these in years. A quick look at the instructions should confirm.

  12. One out of 7 people that receive these calls send money. It is a very lucrative hobby, so a couple of hours a day is all they need.

  13. I read that these criminal gangs are so good that their phone systems are programmed to accept calls only from numbers they have dialed. If they call your home phone and you return the call on your cell or work number it won't go through.

  14. Yes, I agree that the taxable gain is $15. That is what your client ended up with in cash from the intermediary after purchasing the replacement property. The way I see it - here's what I think should be on these lines. You said it's acreage so these #s assume nothing else on this property and the transaction that would have any ordinary income recapture on line 21. Sorry, I can't help with ATX input. line 15 - $15 16 - $175 17 - $190 18 - $100 19 - $90 20, 22 & 23 - $15 24 - $75 25 - $100 Basically since the full gain is $90 and client is paying tax on the $15 the $75 is deferred. Basis in the new is $100 and if sold tomorrow for its $175 FMV, the remaining gain (now deferred) of $75 would be taxable. Hope that makes more sense of it.

  15. Abby, you know I love you. And I'm just a "mom" organization. But I love file folders, sharpies, labels, sticky notes. I also spent a good chunk on hum dinger presentation folders and it makes me happy. It makes me happy to pull out a file when a client comes in with a question, and I can show them my notes of the phone call we had a month ago that might as well have been with Kim the Young'Un cause they recall ZERO of what we discussed. There's room for all us. Merica. (I'm also not deleting my data files and am not sure how that rumor got started...)

  16. Forms-based data entry is much less useful than is commonly exposed. It frequently jumps to a supporting schedule anyhow. So Drake simply has you begin the data entry process where forms-based software ends up. I had very little trouble abandoning forms-based entry when I switched from ATX to Drake 5 years ago. Maybe that's because I had used Microvision before ATX, but in any event it wasn't a difficult transition. Once the user reaches a small degree of software transparency, it becomes very clear that forms based entry is seriously overrated. And the speed & efficiency gains are phenomenal. But that only becomes apparent after the user has invested sufficient time and energy in making the transition.

  17. Except I recall the very *great* frustration with ATX when the jump-to bunny took me around in a total circle, *never* showing me where the problem was. Usually ended up being interference from a completely separate area, or an over-ride that was needed to stop the program from doing something bone-headed. I thought I'd detest the non-forms-based structure of Drake, and there are times I miss the jump-to bunny (less, with some of the new features), but I'd never go back.

  19. Before I complete the return, I would insist that the client contact Ameriprise and take the RMD for not only last year, but take it for 2017 as well. AND, request that Ameriprise automatically program for an RMD every year from now on so the client wouldn't have an excuse to overlook it. THEN once that's done, I would prepare the form (I forget - either 5329 or 8606) to request the 50% waiver and note in the explanation that the RMD for prior year was taken prior to submission of the tax return. I have that type issue with a long time client who is now age 85 and widowed. While she is coherent enough to discuss tax issues, I need to work through her granddaughter (an authorization has been given to me) to execute transactions for tax filings.

  20. Edsel, did you know about Drake's enhancement where a right-click on many of the line items in a calculated return will bring up a box that shows the source entries that feed into that line? It's one of the tools that the support people use, and it was made available to the preparers. I called a couple of times, mostly about state issues early on in the season where I alerted them to something that needed to be corrected. Overall, from that survey it shows that Drake's customers are happier in almost all areas that any other software out there. Good for them.

  21. CCH will give you that exceptional tech support as "concierge customer care" with their Advantage package, all for the low, low price of $3,759. But wait, there's more...call in the next 10 minutes and we'll throw in...
