  1. Did you know that autocorrect thinks "Rita" is not a very common name, and my client really enjoyed the reminder that day: "Hey, we need to do March sales tax. Thanks, Tits."

  2. Wife sent a text to the kids that was supposed to say "Dad and I are going to Disney" but it auto corrected to "Dad and I are going to divorce". Needless to say she got a couple of frantic calls!

  3. While, as a man, I've had that thought many times in my life, some things are best not spoken aloud in public.

  4. And, in order to reduce the taxable amount of the pension by $3000, he/she must have paid for the insurance directly from the pension.

  5. Husband texted me that he was running late and I answered with what was supposed to be "ok, thanks for letting me know" that I sent as "ok, thanks for loving me now." Then I started to send "geez, I should proofread before sending" which started to convert to "Cheese Arthur profit..." which started me laughing so hard that I had tears running. It was at that exact moment that a representative from the state's division of revenue returned my call. All I can say is that poor woman must think I'm totally nuts, and that it's a good thing I don't text much with my clients.

  6. I don't believe it's an IRS requirement since Drake rolls over DL details every year.

  8. I always refer to it as auto-UNcorrect. And yes, I've had some "corrections" that resulted in the same laugh-until-tears upon reading what it thought was better than what I wrote. No good examples off the top of my head, but there sure have been some doozies!

  9. is that last years drivers license information would roll over.

  10. Sad to say I need to scan down on these 1099-R forms. My client list is pretty static and little changes which puts me in a habit of being a tad bit complacent along with being an old coot. Thanks all. Possi that's a valid point I'll need to ask her about .

  11. on the 1099R input screen : At the bottom there are check boxes: "Check the box to exclude Ins premiums for retired public safety officers. (PSO) and enter qualified amount". $3,000 be sure to reduce the medical insurance premiums by $3,000 if you are using medical deductions

  12. On the 1099R input, at the very bottom of the page, there's a box that says "Check box to exclude ins premiums for retired ...", and then enter the amount in the field on the same line.

  13. For my part ATX works just fine. As for growls the tax system provides me with plenty of those gastric and otherwise.

  14. Talking about MD.... I have noticed that each time I efile, I have to check mark that I have verify IDs and address... and who knows what else I am verifying. This is new this year.

  15. I think the license info doesn't roll over because we are supposed to ID everybody every year. I have also noticed that university information must be entered every year by IRS requirements and they don't roll over anymore. For my practice and taste, ATX is the best in the market. Stand alone installation, who opens the program knows what forms and what questions to ask (at least that's what I believe), interface and price look good.

  16. If ATX still worked like it used to prior to 2012, I would have never left for Drake.

  17. While I have been able to keep up my regular work schedule I have now hit a wall with the usual procrastination and getting information has become like pulling teeth. It’s the same people every year but with the month extension they use it as a license to torture me. Only answer to that is price increase. I also have a few EMS workers who are testing for Covid at NY metro airports as contract workers. They all talk among themselves saying they should deduct meals, mileage, parking, tolls, masks (like they’re not supplied) and haircuts! My answer is to use someone who will help you with that. Two took my advice, what a relief.

  19. And the fact that your DL# NEVER CHANGES. At least not in MD. I've had the same license # since I was a teenager.

  20. I think it's a CT requirement. If I hadn't had to check with my clients this year, I would've missed at least two who had their wallets/purses stolen and got new DLs with new #s and dates and a whole bunch of clients who didn't realize that 2021 is their renewal year until I brought it up. But I think it's a pain. CT, CA, and a list of other states also require me to confirm address &/or contact information every year. My generic Have you moved? is a good starting point, but I have to ask more questions each year.

  21. There is probably a box you need to check somewhere. Look at the retirement income and make sure there isn't a 'tax this/don't tax this income' setup.

  22. And sometimes it doesn't take much. I needed a break and went and pulled garlic mustard (invasive weed) for ten minutes. Out in the fresh air, listening to the birds, watching the puppy next door try to herd a flower pot, and getting rids of weeds before they flowered. I felt great afterwards, and was able to come back to my computer refreshed.

  25. THIS!!! STOP IT. STOP IT RIGHT NOW. If you don't take care of yourself, you will burn out and get stress illnesses. I came to this realization some years ago and stopped working one day a week. Usually, but not always, Sunday. Found out that if I took a day for myself I got more done the other six days than in uninterrupted seven without end. Any client who expects instant response any day or any time of day is a client who does not respect us and who is definitely under-paying us. For me, if you want 24/7 instant response, you had better be be a close family member. Anyone else gets me as I choose to respond. If they don't like that, they can go down the street to someone else, and (likely) pay more for poorer-quality work.

  27. What, you actually expected logical objective thinking to be applied to this situation

  28. Yeah, it reminds me of a client several weeks ago, who thought they were getting a tax break that disappeared over 20 years ago. Or my clients who paid an attorney to set up a trust, then they never followed the instructions to fund the trust.

  29. One guy yesterday had a zillion questions on why they owe so much. Gee, he cut back his ES payments but his income was up $60K, I wonder why they might owe money? Thought I had him settled, then today he started in on more questions. I haven't opened any email from him since before lunch because I'm too close to telling him I don't care about his stupid questions, just figure out how you're gonna pay and just. shut. up.

  30. I don't want tax season to be any longer than it already is BUT it seems like broker statements and K1s come later every year. I understand why - brokers are now required to track basis, show all kinds of information they did not have to in the past and K-1s are waiting for some of that same information to do the return that generates the K1. So perhaps we need to permanently move this deadline. Or maybe I just need to find a new line of work.

  31. Total loser here, but I missed a lot of hours caring for Mom, and when she moved to heaven, and I have a lot of new clients who've moved here. So, I'm really winning, just not dancing in the end zone yet. Actually, I was feeling pretty good this morning because I am only two weeks behind now, but I've spent half a day trying to figure out why Sage 941 report does not match Sage payroll register for 1st quarter for a big payroll I do. I know I'll figure it out eventually, but I hate bookkeeping chores during tax season. I'm really happy for the extended deadline. I think I will wind up doing about 40 more returns this year than last, but today I feel like a sloth on xanax, only not as fast.

  32. Yes, I'm usually done by now and I have a few clients that haven't brought in the raw data, are very slow to respond to questions or supply missing information, or are not interested in filing until closer to the May 17th deadline. I can't convince a couple that the returns can be e-filed now and pay the balance owed within the next month, so I haven't received the signed authorization forms back yet. It's annoying.

  33. Today I finally was able to start returning calls, a client who left me two messages one day apart of each other was praying for me to be okay and was praying to find another tax accountant like me since she had not heard back from me.
