  1. Voluntary reporting of income with an ITIN is going to dry up like a river in the Mohave Desert.

  2. What I like about Brother is that you can buy refilled cartridges on Amazon for a very cheap amount. Some of the makers have utilized tech to try and prevent that. It also will hit 100k pages by the end of next week. I'm thinking about moving my color printer to the side and using a mono / black only printer for general usage when I don't need color. I'd like to limp this color print along until retirement.

  3. I love my Brother color laser HL-L3280CDW. It has a great envelope bypass and it was very reasonably priced, but it's monthly duty cycle is only 3,000, so it might not be good enough for printing a lot of pages.

  4. Second on Brother printers. Cheap and you can buy non Brother toner cartridge's and drums on the cheap. We use LD Products for replacement toner and drums.

  5. I've heard the IRS prints them out and puts them at the bottom of the stacks of returns to hand process. All you save is the mail time.

  7. Rev. Proc. 2024-31 explains the QM PIN requirements. Manufacturers must label units with the QM PIN, or otherwise provide it to purchasers. They must at least quarterly provide the IRS with lists of the QM PINs they have issued which qualify. So the IRS will know which are legitimate. I think it is unlikely that there will be a generally available lookup tool, as there would be too much opportunity for fraud (someone could look up numbers until they got a match and use it on a return). "The IRS urges QMs not to place a product’s PIN on the exterior packaging of the product," presumably for the same reason. I wonder if there will be a new reject code "The QM PIN entered on the return has previously been entered on another return".

  8. "Accounting software company Open Ledger has launched a new product in time for tax day. Meet PokéTax, a game that helps make tax filing quite fun. Instead of tax forms, users take on Tax Trainers — gym leaders — representing different parts of a tax form, such as income, deductions, and credits. Each leader asks questions that help players complete their tax forms. Once you finish your PokéTax run, we guide you to the IRS Direct File site to officially submit,” Open Ledger co-founder Pryce Adade-Yebesi told TechCrunch. The game is an adaptation of the open source Pokémon game called Pokémon Showdown, and he promised this was not an April Fool’s joke. The game has an AI assistant that helps organize users’ responses, and players can win badges — discover new deductions — as they take on the Tax Trainers. " Darn it, this game is in Beta and cannot be used to file a tax return

  10. I like my Canon ImageClass D1620, but it may not be available anymore. Copy feeder, scan, 500 page paper drawer. I don't do color printing, so I like a b/w only printer. It was about $300 when I got it 3-4 years ago. I get aftermarket toner cartridges on Amazon fairly cheap. Tom Longview, TX

  12. Ditto on Brother, I have the MFC-L5850DW and it's been a good workhorse. The high-yield toner cartridges are good.

  13. direct deposit has been allowed on an electronically filed 1040-X for a couple of years (IRS notice February 2023--no mention of direct debit). I would be concerned that direct debit might not happen by the chosen date. My understanding is that e-filed amended returns do not jump the queue, they just get there quicker.

  14. We have two 6200dw's and both are over 100,000 on page counts. Our original 1800dw (very old model) has over 300,000 pages on it. Still works great !! But LD Products is a great place to buy toner and drums. So much cheaper than OEM stuff. We used Ricoh units before Brother and toner was not cheap for those. And aftermarket toner was hard to find.

  18. What program are you using? Are you overriding entries to try to force the figures to what you expect? I try to not override unless absolutely necessary. I entered in a practice return in Drake, so the names and SSNs are fake. Here's what it produced based on your information using the alternative calc for year of marriage. Pdf is 5 pages : 8962 & worksheets.pdf

  19. The flip side of this is I have one client whose DL expired in 2009-ish. She has not updated it as she has been working all over the world as well as in the US, flitting around like a butterfly. She has an international DL but that is not accepted for tax ID. We keep using the over-ten-years-gone ID and it still works for claiming refunds. She will be settling down (thank goodness; ugh) and will get a new, local, DL this year, she promises.

  20. Form 1040 instructions page 33: " Recapture of an education credit. You may owe this tax if you claimed an education credit in an earlier year, and either tax-free educational assistance or a refund of qualified expenses was received in 2024 for the student. See Form 8863 for more details. Check box 3 and enter the amount and “ECR” in the space next to that box"

  21. In some DC cases, I have entered the ID or license information and yet my clients receive a letter asking them to go on line and submit scanned copies of their IDs or licenses.... especially for people with ITINs.

  24. As long as their is an estate earning income, a fiduciary return would be required. However, once all of the assets are transferred to the non-profit, there is no estate any more to earn income and therefore the fiduciary return would not be required. I am not sure how the estate could continue to exist after it is transferred to the non-profit.

  26. Don't allow yourself to feel like a loser. There was no way safely to predict this; better to file (once) and be safe than to skip it and possibly be open to nasty fines and investigations. Your advice kept them safe. Had it gone the other way, you could have been castigated for callousness or negligence by those same clients.

  28. Oh that QM PIN will be great, no more searching online! Shoot, some installers invoices don't even include the model name or number. And as Lee said, some just lie. Anything to make the sale, I guess. (Yeah, sometimes I'm sure it's an honest mistake, but it's late in the season and I'm cranky and unwilling to give them the benefit of the doubt, lol.)
