Now you may have an RMD issue if husband did not take his RMD before dying. I encourage my clients to take the RMD early in the year.

Inherited from spouse. If a traditional IRA is inherited from a spouse, the surviving spouse generally has the following three choices: Treat it as his or her own IRA by designating himself or herself as the account owner. Treat it as his or her own by rolling it over into a traditional IRA, or to the extent it is taxable, into a: a. Qualified employer plan, b. Qualified employee annuity plan (section 403(a) plan), c. Tax-sheltered annuity plan (section 403(b) plan), d. Deferred compensation plan of a state or local government (section 457(b) plan), or Treat himself or herself as the beneficiary rather than treating the IRA as his or her own. If a surviving spouse receives a distribution from his or her deceased spouse's IRA, it can be rolled over into an IRA of the surviving spouse within the 60-day time limit, as long as the distribution is not a required distribution, even if the surviving spouse is not the sole beneficiary of his or her deceased spouse's IRA. https://www.irs.gov/Retirement-Plans/Plan-Participant,-Employee/Retirement-Topics-Beneficiary

Does anyone use an alternative location for data and/or backup?

Does anyone use an alternative location for data and/or backup?
Abby Normal replied to Abby Normal's topic in General Chat
I guess my message was unclear, to say the least (either that or you've all started drinking early). I meant do you change the ATX defaults locations in the ATX Admin Console on your computer. And, by the way, NEVER use Carbonite to backup ATX. It doesn't back up the folder where ATX puts the data and the backups. -
The IRS has to triage this things with limited funds, and their computers are ancient, but still I have to agree. It makes our job a joke when crap like this is allowed to go on.

How do these cities know that you've done work in them?

Never moving to OH.... or PA, NJ or NY. FL sounds good, though!

I use the windows built in scanning software for my scanner at home. It works fine. But at work, I agree with Margaret. Get a ScanSnap and use their software/

I found it: http://www.ringcentral.com/fax/ Thanks!

How did the assets get into an Excel spreadsheet? I've always had to enter all the fixed assets from new clients by hand.

I've filed 4137 for years for a hair stylist. You would think telling the IRS that you have tips you failed to report tips to your employer would have some repercussions, but I guess the IRS has bigger fish to fry.

Sorry, Joan! Hugz! I still have pictures of my dogs in my office, even though they are long gone. They were very special to me, as I can tell yours are.

I just emailed a pdf to myself using Virtru and it was fine until I opened the attachment. There was no obvious way to print or save, so until my clients got used to it, we'd be getting a ton of calls. And if they were only getting Virtru emails from me, it could take them many years to remember what to do. Why do programmers make it like this‽

Form 8879 keeps using "I will enter my PIN"
Abby Normal replied to mrichman333's topic in OLTPRO / OneDesk
Customize the Master Form to check the box you want. I don't check the box for the spouse because half of my clients are not married. From return manager, open the Forms menu. Edit: And it's not 8879, it's the EF Info form. I customize several things on several tabs in that form. Edit 2: Although it looks like you could customize the 8879, if you wanted to. -
It's none of the other partner's business.

Looks like it only works with webmail or Outlook. I don't use either of those.

When you're in a return, there's a big green round icon that says Tax Research that takes you to Intelliconnect. You should also have a browser plugin, but if you upgrade to Firefox 44, it will no longer work. It actually is disabled in earlier versions of Firefox, but you cam go to about:config and search for signatures.required and set it to false.

We don't give out our actual fax #. I we don't answer either line, the call gets forwarded to MaxEmail and you can leave a message or send a fax. If both lines are busy you can still send us a fax.

They should have just issued new stock for the new shareholder. Then the existing shareholders wouldn't have a taxable event, plus it's cleaner and easier to do it that way. If indeed the shareholders sold the stock they held, their basis is whatever it is on their stock basis worksheets. That has to be tracked every year. If it hasn't been tracked, you need to reconstruct it from the beginning. The new shareholder has outside basis only, because they did not pay any money into the S corp.
