  6. We (those who vote) can, but we don't. The enemy is us! It is the old Catch-22. In my case, we have a many term congress person, who has ascended to a good level of power (through longevity), which likely brings "back" money a new person could not do. So, does one vote for the powerful incumbent, or put in a newbie, who will likely not be able to do anything for several terms... Then there is the gerrymandering issue...

  7. Line 22 on Sch A is a calculated field now. If you use billing, it links to last year's bill field, or you can enter at top of Sch A.

  12. How long do they have until they decide on extenders that are still hanging for 2017? Forever? I wish we could fire every single one.

  13. I've used Eset NOD32 Antivirus for 20+ years with no issues (that I recall). Until they fail me, I'll never switch. They roll out program updates slowly.

  14. Mine crashed too. Panic in the trenches..."Oh, noooo, not now, not now!" Possible new computer, compatible new printer, driver downloads, phone tech help time, hooking everything up; lost programs, arggghhh! Mine started going haywire yesterday after I rolled over my first 2016 ATX client to 2017 program. I'd seen the MalWareBytes pop-up too. I've got premium MWB but don't know if it's set for automatic updates or not. Later punched the pop-up but don't know If that was the problem or the cure update. I uninstalled two high-memory usage programs and the memory increase (I think) put me (sort of) back in business - either that or the MWB fix. Shut everything down and left off overnight. Opened up normal this morning and I think all is okay now.

  15. Bloomberg projected that these workarounds could cost upwards of $154 billion in lost revenue to the U.S. Treasury. This could get messy.... To read more of the details, google "Bloomberg & State Tax Workarounds" and look for the article from 5 days ago.

  16. I don't let Malwarebytes update automatically. It sends me a message to say that an update is available. I will skip this one.

  21. Checksum Most w2 uploads are "safe" for the tax agency, because they can easily hold you responsible for any errors. In this case, like most, there is a "total" record which is checked against the sum of the individual records. One odd exception is to be able to even prepare a 941 upload, the software vendor must provide personal information, which is lunacy, since the software vendor has no access to, control over, or liability for the data (unless they elected to take on that role).

  22. The Senate Finance Committee is pushing to pass the extenders. However the House is showing little or no interest. Likely the only way it passes is if the Senate attaches it to next CR on February 8th.

  24. I realize that Evan, but she is the custodial parent, no question, but has allowed the spouse to take 1 of 2 children in the past when they spent ample time with the other parent. In 2017 that no longer was the case, and she doesn't want to take the chance of him claiming the child as he had in the past. You know how it is with divorced couples. She legitimately is entitled to both exemptions in 2017 and doesn't want to go through the hassle of proving it to IRS in the event he files first.

  26. Thanks for the updates. I had to spend time today at my Mom's so I immediately update my premium MBAM before doing anything else.

  27. Good to know it wasn't any of our machines! Thank you, cbslee, for posting the reason. I also have the premium version of MBAM and when I saw its real-time protection was turned off, that my other AV software working overtime and that things were slowing up, I knew that something, or a conflict, was going on between the two of them so I shut off the MBAM to investigate. Luckily for me I wasn't working today, and once I rebooted the problem was being resolved with the Malwarebytes second/corrected updated.

  28. I used the Janitor Bob method. My Malwarebytes Premium is the same as his. Earlier today, not only did I have my computer shutting down, not loading Windows, and running extraordinarily slow when it did start, Malwarebytes would not turn Web Protection to On, it would be stuck in Starting... Now, I seem to be OK. Well, except for really small fonts on just about everything, icons, tabs, text, etc. But, I'm not about to mess with settings unless I'm sure everything else is back to normal again. Thanks, CB, for the post re Malwarebytes. I'm glad to know it's not something I did and not my computer which is old but hope to nurse it through one more tax season.

  30. Well, that explains a lot of what was happening with my computer today! It's almost 6:30 and I'm finally on, online, and maybe OK, but too scared to open my tax prep program and work it in. I was going to have my techie in on Monday if it misbehaved again. Do you know the version number that is the new, good one?

  31. I pay for Malwarebytes Premiuim and it is a very good security program that plays well with other antivirus software...I have been a fan for many years. That said, that bad update caused me grief that I do not need this time of year

  32. I'll echo the Drake enthusiasm again. I was out of the country for a couple of weeks and just returned to work today. Took me about 3 minutes to renew my Drake software online while watching TV at home. Tomorrow I'll load it onto my computer at the office and will be preparing my first return 10-15 minutes later. Its a great program. Simple, elegant, faster than anything in its price category, and it's very stingy with memory and also space needed for backups. Time is money in this business, and time saved falls to the bottom line in the form of profitability.
