Even if you delete them, I think Google keeps all that for a period of time. If we aren't trusting Google, we can't trust ANY VOIP services and a LOT of us are in trouble. Are we pretending the IRS is using copper wire phones still? JMO but I'd trust Google's security more than I trust the blue post office box outside my office. As for the OP I am willing at accept documents in pretty much any fashion they want to deliver. I've yet to be able to open something to view that they've sent me. I just don't want items trickling into the office. Give them to me all at once or something is going to be lost.3 points

It's definitely your computer. And thousands of other users' computers. It's not WK's fault their software doesn't work with so many computers.2 points

As to the original point, I categorically refuse to accept any file that is not a PDF. You want to send it from your phone? Get CamScanner or something similar, upload to the portal. Just keep dumping it back on the client until they get a clue - or drop off paper.2 points

I was speaking with an agent in Buffalo yesterday. She is asking that we get stuff to her no later than Thursday of next week. She thinks that they are going to be let go on Friday (Mar 7). Has anyone else heard this? She then said "I probably shouldn't be telling you that."1 point

"No later than March 21, 2025, FinCEN intends to issue an interim final rule that extends BOI reporting deadlines, recognizing the need to provide new guidance and clarity as quickly as possible, while ensuring that BOI that is highly useful to important national security, intelligence, and law enforcement activities is reported." We'll see what happens1 point

Time for my tax season gripe. It starts with the issuers of information returns (W-2s, 1099s, 1098s etc) send this message to taxpayers: "We have wonderful news!!!! You can now access your information ONLINE!!!" I think the only "wonderful news" is for the issuers. They no longer have to send things in the mail, pay postage, or even print anything. So when we ask for these things from our clients. "OK, I've got the information right here on my phone! Let me show it to you. {scroll, scroll, scroll, . . . scroll} for a W-2, then again {scroll, scroll, ad infinitum} for a 1099. "Can you print these out for me?" "Oh no sir, I don't have a printer that works anymore" For what it's worth, I insist on hard copies for any document that has tax withheld. so we are protected if ever questioned. Thanks for reading this rant...1 point

Well, it could also be one of these: The credit is limited to the regular tax, so if he had no tax, then no credit. Or if tax was less than the credit, then the credit is limited to the tax. Another thing that could be happening to some taxpayers is if the tentative minimum tax from 6251 is more than the regular tax on the 1040, then it appears that the personal portion of the credit is NOT allowed, and line 9 of the form 8911 says "do not file this form" unless there is also a credit on line 3, and line 3 would be the business portion of the credit. Would any of that be a reason that your form isn't being produced? ETA - I tested #2 above by entering enough AMT income to create that situation on one of Drake's test returns. Once tentative minimum tax on the 6251 exceeded the regular tax, Drake no longer produced the 8911 but the 8911 Sch A remained in the return and showed the credit on line 21 of that schedule, but it did not flow to the 1040 Sch 3, and no credit was allowed.1 point

ATX is finicky software but it's also true that there are millions of combinations of hardware components and various software installed, making it difficult to troubleshoot errors. I've never used someone else's computer that didn't have at least a few and perhaps a dozen bits of software installed and running that they did not even know they had. Uninstalling or disabling this software can solve a lot of problems.1 point

It can't. Just report the income on the estate return, noting "Reported to xxx-xx-xxxx." If there was withholding, then you'll want it reissued. Let the retirement plan trustee decide to whom it should be issued.1 point

If our clients would send us all the pages, we'd usually have the information we need. CT requires 50% or more of a fund to be CT-sourced before it's CT tax-free, so I scan the "funds" page if available, but I don't worry if not. (I seldom see more than a couple % attributed to CT.) I just put it in the CT-taxable column. If a client purchased bonds from municipalities and those pages are missing, I tell the client to get me that information. Most of their brokers use mostly bonds from CT municipalities, state public works, etc., so there's a lot of income that can be exempt from CT tax. I warn my clients that inherit investment accounts from mom/dad who lived in NY or FL or other states to talk about the investment choices with their own financial advisors soon, discussing things like risk-tolerance and state-sourced funds and municipal bonds.1 point

Unless the amounts are larger, I just make it all taxable to the state, if the info is not provided. I used to look the mutual funds up, but the MD portion was always a very small percentage. It's usually better to pay a little tax than to pay me to look it up.1 point

I got it to fill in Sch 3, line 6j by entering all of this input: Go to screen 8911 and fill in T,S,J, line 2a needs an entry. I entered "taxpayer main home", then continue through with entries for actual home address and owner's TIN in the appropriate boxes Entries for lines # 4 and 5 - enter dates began and placed in service Either line 6b or 6d - I HAD to enter a census tract GEOID on one of these lines and check the box to the right that indicates which appendix that number is located. It would not calculate or populate the credit without this information. I think that is located in the the form 8911 instructions with a link there to those Appendices. Line 8 - enter the cost of the refueling property Line 9 - if this is entirely personal use, enter ZERO line 11 - I left this blank assuming if it was all personal use there would not be any sec 179 deduction Line 17 - be sure to check the box to indicate the property where this is installed is the taxpayer's main home With all of this entered, it created the form 8911 with Part II filled in and also created form 8911,Sch A with parts I and III completed and also the cost of refueling property on line 8 of part II. This is everything I had to enter for a credit to calculate and flow to the correct line on Sch 3 of the 1040. I haven't filed one of these for any client, so judge for yourself if these entries and results are appropriate for your client's situation. The 8911 will transmit, and appears that Sch A has to be attached as a pdf, but Drake has that completed and should create the pdf for you to attach in View/Print mode. Hope this helps.1 point

Also bad: Clients think they can take a picture with their cell phone. Always blurry, crooked, dark, and impossible to read. Forbid they should attach a .pdf file.1 point

I give them my Google Voice number so texts come right to my computer. I can type texts to them from my computer. Bonus: No clients have my actual cell number.1 point
-
Why would you want to have it texted? Just more work for us. As far as I am concerned email me a pdf or give me a paper copy.1 point
-
Exactly, when has anyone been offered a reduced fee for electing to go "paperless"?1 point
-
It's even worse when you tell them to print it to a PDF and attach it to an email. They are dazed and say "Huh?"1 point
-
What's worse is when it goes to an older person that literally has never opened a PDF, let alone print one......from their phone.1 point
-
Isn't this the absolute truth? So many with the info on their phone and no printer. Then they want to send a screenshot, which we can't read. So tired of saying "Where is your this, this and this?" What a waste of time and energy. This year I am telling my assistant to add a surcharge. Either they will learn a lesson or pay the price.1 point
-
Sometimes I have been able to get them to forward it to my email so I can print it off rather than wait for them to figure out a way to print it. I hate having to go back to one I have started.1 point

"Internal Revenue Service: More than 110 IRS offices that handle taxpayer assistance will be closed, according to a plan from the U.S. General Services Administration obtained by The Washington Post, as the Trump administration began layoffs of about 7,000 workers in mid-February, at the peak of tax season, multiple outlets reported."0 points

I haven't heard anything that specific, only that layoffs during the season are to take place and that services will be affected.0 points
