  1. Client of mine got married. Her new spouse sent me a 1000+ word text (I've never met him previous to this) about doing their tax return with 6 questions that culminated in wanting to argue about the tax code of MFS. I informed him I don't do MFS returns - you need to go elsewhere. He replied with accusations and wanting to argue about it. I'm exhausted already with this man - buh bye.

  2. I saw something similar. Last year they asked for ssn's for the signer; this year they are asking for ssn's, address, phone number.... it's just a matter of time before they start requiring blood samples, it seems. At which point, we'll not only be unpaid auditors but also unpaid phlebotomists! Then we can get a class-action suit against the IRS to pay us for all this unpaid work, claim the back pay, plus benefits and gov't pensions.... ok; I'll stop daydreaming now.

  3. Haven't referred to the repair regs post in a long time. I printed out the state EINs awhile ago. Thanks for all you do, you're one of my heroes, along with Wonder Woman.

  4. Hair samples for DNA and test the children too. That will be the required documentation for the 8867!

  5. I get woozy when I see blood. Can I take a cheek swab from my clients instead?

  6. I haven't used them in over a year. I never used the EIN one because I delete the 1099G. (I'd consider that a tip.)

  7. I'll start a topic for tips and tricks and pin it for us. I'm going to suggest that the subject of the tip be made larger and in bold so that they stand out and aren't lost if a discussion ensues within the thread. How's that?

  8. My preferred term is "legis-vermin" and it applies equally to ALL of them, whatever side of the aisle, federal or state. Actually used that term to one (state) person who is individually decent and she got *such* a kick out of it!

  9. Is anyone still referring to the repair reg pinned post? Is anyone referring at all to the one on state EINs? I'd like to unpin these if they are no longer being used. There is a new one for posting tips, tricks and workarounds as they are discovered in using the 2016 software.

  10. Well, now that you brought that up I'd like to mention something about the new car smell. Years ago, one of my fireman came down with a rare cancer at 46 y/o. No known cause but we thought it had something to do with a fire we had in a hospital's X Ray room where there was some radioactive iodine. He became our research specialist on cancer causes and he impressed on us to always open your windows for a couple of minutes to air out the car, especially in the summer. The plastics and vinyl give off VOCs, Volatile Organic Compounds, vaporizing especially when heated...hence, part of your new car smell. Those VOCs are nasty, containing benzene, chlorine, fluorine, among others. So don't take any deep breaths when you get into the new car, as much as it gives you a good feeling, fresh air is always better. BTW, that fireman didn't live much longer, I miss him. Thanks Abby, you made a good point.

  11. Creating Links Between Fields source: http://files.cchsfs.com/doc/atx/2014/Help/14.3/Content/Both-SSource/Creating Links Between Fields.htm Use the Start Link and Finish Link feature to create a link between two fields on any form (including schedules and worksheets). This function, represented by the Start Link/Finish Link toggle button on the toolbar above an open return, links text or numeric values from one field (source field) to another field (destination field). After a link has been established, changes made in the Start Link field are reflected in the destination field. When checking a return for errors (Check Return), the Finish Link field (destination) will be marked as an overridden field. Start/Finish links automatically roll over from prior year or prior period returns. To create custom links: Select the source field. Do one of the following: On the toolbar, click the Start Link button. From the Edit menu, select Start Link. Navigate to the destination field on any form, schedule, or worksheet. Do one of the following: On the toolbar, click the Finish Link button. From the Edit menu, select Finish Link. If it takes longer than 40 seconds to finish the link, the request will be canceled. Destination fields have a green background. Creating links between fields: example of source/destination fields Canceling Relationship between Two Linked Fields To undo the link between two fields: Place the cursor in the destination (green) field. Do one of the following: On the toolbar, click the Restore button. From the Edit menu, select Restore Field. Press Ctrl+R. When the green background disappears from the destination field, you know the link has been removed. Exceptions: When Fields Cannot Accept a Link The following fields cannot be linked: Input or Detail Sheets Itemized Lists Circular references or mathematical loops Whenever a field cannot be linked, you'll receive a message that will alert you to this exception.

  13. I also e-filed one individual, and have our own individual return input completed. I'm waiting on our 1099-SA forms. I did e-file the C corp return for my own business last night too. None of my clients have all of their documentation yet so I'll have a couple more weeks before the onslaught.

  14. It is my decided and experienced professional opinion that: "Any deadlines or enforcement practices threatened by the IRS are a TOTAL comedy show." Anyone with evidence to the contrary, please post it here.

  15. Eeegads! I only complete a total of 400 returns. If I were as efficient as you, I would be 25% through the season. I only have 9 drop offs so far, and only 2 of them have all necessary information.

  16. Thanks for sharing that Lion. One thing I notice on your home page is that the tabs on the top are hard to read. Maybe it is my screen, but the tabs are almost shaded out in the dark green border.

  19. This is from Drake's official board.... "We were directed by OH not to print the form until forms approval was received. As soon as we receive it, we will release the update that will allow printing." They are advising you can efile, just can't print Ohio form yet.

  20. Notice also (in ATX) that on your business returns there is an authorized signer sheet that pops into the return. There is a lot of information on that sheet. ATX says will not be needed this year except for the name and address. I think they are going to tighten up and make everyone prove who they are when they sign a return in future years. 22. I have used AFSB www.afsb.net with very good results. Easy setup, had a newsletter, email, file transfer, reasonable pricing and other amenities. They specialize in tax and accounting websites. I found them to be reasonably priced.

  23. I believe the $10,000 would be a non-dividend distribution. Distribution to extent of capital stock is basis to shareholder. Then distribution to extent of Retained Earning is dividend income. Remaining distribution is liquidating dividend.. That is how it would appear on the 1099-DIV and how I believe it would shake out on the 1120. So to answer your question - the liquidating distribution does not necessarily tie to the M-2.
