  1. Prior year returns get my current-year rates, adjusted as always for complexity of the return in question. Won't even look until after 4/15 or they can go elsewhere. Have a new one this year, two amended returns, sent by his brother who is handling their now just-passed mother's final return. He's fine with waiting until May, after discovering an error for 2021 & 2022 (thanks, TTx - the gift that keeps on giving).

  2. We'll get one on occasion. Many times the email address is junk. Sometimes it will be something like "Joseph Smith, [email protected]" and if you look up smithcorp dot com there is no site. Junk!

  3. Just received an email from "Karen" that says "I have uploaded my 2023 tax documents in the workdrive below secure link, please look through it, and let me know if you need any additional information. Also will it cost the same as the last." I'm small enough that I know all my clients and didn't fall for it. Those that deal in volume returns or have staff beware!

  4. Client is Domiciled in FL. Was stationed in GA for 2 1/2 years and owned his home in GA from the time he arrived until deployed overseas. Sold the home when he left. Cap gain is about 20K. Excluded under §121 for Fed return. Is it excluded for GA as well? I see in the instructions that GA follows fed rules for Cap Gains, but nothing about sale of primary residence by non-resident military. Thanks for any help. Tom Longview, TX

  7. I didn't see a tab but I uploaded the Form MO-NRI. I didn't see that earlier. So thanks.

  8. I don't have any MO clients now but on the state tab is there an option to choose Part Year Resident? If so, maybe appropriate schedules will appear. The last one I had was 2016 and used MO Form MO-NRI for an allocation.

  9. I'd ask the trust lawyer who set it up, if available, or a trust lawyer. The "hold AND administer" wording sounds different than what you're saying the trustee could do. I don't think is the same as HOLD and administer. It's not hold OR administer. Let the lawyer answer to your client.

  10. According to Forbes, there is no sign in the Senate of this bill coming to a vote.

  11. I have not seen any indication that it was.

  12. Bumping up. Is this legislation even coming to a vote in the Senate? Was it part of the spending package that was rushed through the house last night? Tom Longview, TX

  13. Sect 736(a) does not make sense for a rental partnership. The partnership should be advised to make a section 734 adjustment under a section 754 election,

  15. I also had trouble this week with a multi state return where I tried to split the returns and save the spouse's file. I saved it more than once and each time the program could not find the wife's split return. I finally rolled over last year's split return for the wife and entered all of her data separately again. I did not want to waste time with support. I've had issues with the program repeatedly crashing after using the tax planner and trying to go back to the current year actual return. Program simply closes, but it may have to do with me not calculating in the planner before trying to go back to the actual current file. I also had trouble with installation and communication with Drake's server. Every time I launched the program, MS Edge would open on top of it, and the Drake tech people couldn't explain why. Some helper file didn't install properly and also was an environmental issue with my computer and anti-virus or firewall, but it did not help for the basic support person to suggest I change my internet provider from Firefox to Chrome. I could NOT make her understand that my ISP was not the cause. Many calls later, I finally got to a person that could help.

  18. I feel the same as Bulldog, but I do not take any new clients that are behind in tax returns until after April 15th, they have to go on extension. If they are not willing to do that then they are not the client for me. I feel like the clients that keep up on their returns in a timely manner deserve to be taken care during the regular tax season. For the most part that has worked out well for me, however there is ALWAYS exceptions.

  19. I get a ton, but I always can tell that they are coming through my website, because that is my only public email. I got a really detailed one yesterday about my website images violating copyright laws, blah, blah, blah. I just deleted it. The funny thing was that I had just notified the new owner that bought the website provider that I would not be renewing and it would be coming down 3/31.

  20. I charge no less for prior years than current year. When I'm running late, I charge the same. When the client was late, I charge a bite more, making sure I take into account my time dealing with past info/forms/etc. (and, of course, more for additional forms/issues/etc. in those prior years). A new client with multiple years, probably the same price, but based on what's in each year. But I'm not taking new clients except good referrals! Schirallicpa charge them royally for your brain power and angst to go all the way back to the beginning of Covid.

  21. I do them at my current year rates. If I am doing prior year returns it is normally for a new client, and I want them for the long haul, not just this engagement. Tom Longview, TX

  22. LOTS of these! But I just hover over the email address or compare the email address with the Reply to address and invariably they're not remotely related.

  23. I've been getting a ton of these. They're easy to tell they are a scam. Then there are the ones that are kinda vague but could be from potential clients. Those I will respond saying I'm not taking new clients. Then there is the one in a hundred that says: (a paragraph on how they found me) "We registered as domestic partners in January 2023 in Massachusetts, moved to AZ for June and July, and California from August on. My partner just has MA income to report (quit job to go to law school), I have the same job/w-2 but taxed in all 3 states. TurboTax full service couldn’t cover RDP / community property rules in CA and we are pretty lost on our own! " Closing paragraph. I pick them up as clients. I'm a sucker for a sob story.

  24. At the very bottom of the Main Info form, there's a checkbox for Late election to file 2553. When you check it, it put the text on the top of the 1120S. Then answer question G bear the top of the 1120S, Yes. Then attach the scanned 2553 to the efile.

  25. The inability to find the spousal return when splitting MFS has bugged me for about 3 years. The program has shut down every time I've used the planner this year.
