  1. I never charge active military or students and probably would not have charged that veteran either.

    Form 982

That is if they notice it. I had a case once when the client received a CP-2000 because they did not report the 1099-C. The examiner never noticed the 982 at the bottom of the heap. It may be specifically looked for now as it is so much more common. Anyway, all ended well for my client.
  3. Yes, because many clients, because you have to have high deductible insurance to participate in an HSA; do contribute extra amounts to the interest bearing accounts up to the maximum allowed. You have to find out if your client did; and how much.
  4. OMG! We are all losing it. I agree with Tom. It wasn't nice to call a bunch of us "ancient stuff" and toss us in the recycle bin. Have a great rest of the week.
  5. Are you saying that when I add the construction of my new office addition to the fixed assets for my business, that I should depreciate the construction; ie: walls, basement, ceramic floors, etc; and then expense the cost of the steel roof? NO WAY!!!! I will expense the blinds, the furnishings, the electronics; but what should I do with the composite deck that connects it to the rest of the house? This entire thread has been argument for the sake of argument. Consider each case separately. If it was a repair, it was a repair. If it was a newly constructed roof, imo; it is depreciated. In this part of the country, it is possible to totally reconstruct a really decent roof for $6000.
  6. I will be working. Once I leave those extensions hanging; I hate getting back to them. Also it is time for first quarter payroll and quarterly and/or monthly sales tax returns in Wi.
  7. My mother-in-law always said that and it has proved to be true more often than not.
  8. I alternate between an Iomega Ego 500 G and a Maxtor One Touch Mini which is 80 G. Either one will hold several backups of my entire system. My Ego is actually a Toshiba and very highly rated. Also have a 350 G Ego for my laptop. These I use for complete system backups. Individual files from different programs have their individual Jump Drives. Amazing the amount of info you can put on those little guys. I ordered a CaseLogic case from Tiger to keep all the jumps in.
  9. I have been having to discard a lot of unnecessary forms from nearly every return.
  10. That might be surprising and maybe not. Parsons Tech, at the time, and maybe still, had a lot of little handy programs. Some of them are still installed on my XP computer. The installation disks are mostly floppies, but they had some amazing stuff.
  11. Thanks Jack. Since I am doing fine with 12.10, I will just wait and see. I really have no major complaints at the moment. Again, standalone, Win 7 64; i5 with 16 G Ram.

    ATX Backup

In the beginning you will have to tell the program where to export the returns. Have your device (presumably USB) connected. Check the box in front of the returns you want to export. Go to Program Manager, Returns, then navigate to export checked returns. It will probably ask you where you want to export them. Browse for your device. Mine happens to be E: Store and Go. When you have that directory in the box, click on OK or Export; whatever it says. Pretty much after the first time, when you are working on a return and click on Export, the system will know where to take it. A box will open up. If you have exported it before; as I am exporting them every couple of minutes while working on them; it will say this return already exists, do you want to override it. Obviously, if you have made changes the answer will be YES. You can then carry your device to any computer that contains the ATX 2012 program and "import" the return into that program. Really, really wonderful.
  13. OK, since you and Joan updated, I will move to 12.11 but sure hate to rock the boat.

    ATX Backup

That is eerie, and not the case here. I hope you got that straightened out. I am not networked and really have had relatively minor problems compared to some of you. Jack is correct. You do not backup to your external device. You export the file after it is completed. Actually, I have gotten into the habit of exporting the file several times through the creation. That trusty little jump holds a wealth of uncompromised information. Even though my backup file appears to be OK, I have always used an external device to export returns be it a zip, a rev, or whatever worked at the time. You HAVE to have yourself covered or possibly live in a world of hurt. I did discover one thing a week ago. In order to restore and/or import a file that has crashed, you have to delete the crashed file from the Program Manager. But then, I might be the only dummy who didn't know that.

    ATX Backup

I just took a look at mine and none of them have a single digit kb count. I still don't trust it. I am exporting every return to an external device just as I have every other year. For some reason, my program isn't acting foolish any more. I have not installed the last two updates. I have never had the printing or disappearing check boxes that others have had. Have only had a few crashes and speed isn't all that bad. It HAS to be something to do with standalone, Win 7 64 bit.; and loaded up Ram. Today I did a Partnership and three pretty complicated returns; some rentals; a C with estimates and encountered no issues. Tomorrow may be another story. I am truly thankful and still running around 41 returns behind. Wishing you all well, but Margaret and a few others seem to be doing about the same as I am. There has to be a reason.
  16. Hey, easy on the used car dealers. My husband has owned a small used car dealership for 35 years and he still believes in the handshake. Our boys are moving into it now and last year they got the local Small Business of the Year Award and didn't even know they were in the running. Some of them are honest.
  17. I am sticking with 12.10 until someone gives me a reason to change. I am getting work done and time is running out. With many "difficult" returns yet today, I cannot afford to test drive anything as long as what I have is working (sort of).

    ATX Backup

I think the backup/restore is fine if you are backing up to an external drive. I know that the export/import is. Just don't trust the backup in ATX. In any case, there should always be an external backup in case the entire computer would crash.
  19. Jainen does make sense, but I have never expensed a roof on a rental property; right or wrong.

    ATX Backup

That's pretty much what I am doing. I have noticed in the last two days, though, that when you hit the "save" button, the little ring is spinning, so something is happening that wasn't happening before. I still don't trust it so export every return to a jump drive as often as I remember while I am working on it; then when it is complete. Also backup entire system to an external drive at least twice a week. My backup system has the option to shut down the computer when it is done, so I can start the backup and go to bed. Lemon for me! Thanks!
  21. That is exactly what I thought. Why go through the bother of filing an extension if you have to send an estimated payment along. That is just normal procedure. What is so hard about just giving us (say) a seven day extension of time to file.?
  22. Those of us with standalone seem to be doing much better than networks. Knock on Wood!
  23. These posts are reassuring, but I am still afraid. Maybe I'll try it tomorrow on my laptop and see how it goes.
  24. I wish this discussion had taken place last week. I had one that was coded 1 for premature distribution; no known exception. The taxpayer contacted the broker who said we couldn't get a corrected 1099R until May. I went ahead and filed it as it was with the intention of amending it when we get the correct information. Because this was a very complicated return involving inheritances, and many other issues; the client did not want to do anything that would draw unnecessary scrutiny to the return. I assured him that we had not done anything incorrectly, but he preferred this route. This board is a never-ending learning experience. Gail, it was not a trustee to trustee transfer which is probably why it was not coded G and I didn't know that either. It could have been coded 4 at least and avoided the penalty.
  25. Since I have never had an issue with boxes unchecking or speed, I am still undecided. The only odd thing I have noticed in the last few days is complex returns freezing and crashing. I have decided to shut down and reboot every day at noon and see if that helps. I also found out that you have to delete the return before you can restore it, so that is another panic attack gone; just until the next quirk comes along.
