  1. The taxpayer screwed up, so they'll just have to wait for the check to clear and the another check mailed out. Calling the PPL might get it expedited.
  2. Yes, for me it's auto printing the state & Amt depreciation reports. I knew there were people on this board that did beta testing! One guy that's posting a lot on the software issues board keeps insisting there wasn't any, and it was all rushed out. I know that's BS, but ya say it enough, and the speculation gets posted as rumors, gets posted as fact. Kinda sad for the company. Oh and after 12.12, the program is opening so fast I don't have time to blink.

    Form 982

Hey, I've got one of these, and before I send her the bad news, let me see if I'm missing any chances to decrease the amount of COD I have to put in income. There was a cash out refi, so only half of $18k can be excluded under QPRI. (it was jointly owned). She was insolvent by another $6500. I'm reducing the tax attributes on her old RV, and a car. For the amount insolvent. Anything?

    Extensions

I'll start some or put them in the queue when I get most of the docs. That way, I'm mostly done while waiting for that final k1 or brokers statement. Or if I need to extend, the projection is done too. I get the bulk of my returns in late February & early march. Mid February I was so caught up I actually went out with friends two evenings in one weekend! Then my kitty got sick, and I didn't do squat for a whole week. That messed me up mightily.
  5. The program opens so fast with 12.12 I barely have time to blink. Really.
  6. I'm liking the FAM now that I've had time to play around a bit in it. And the three returns open. I was amending some returns in 2010, and it was driving me nuts that I couldn't open two!

    Form 982

You need to manually enter on line 21 of the 1040 " cancelled debt excluded on form 982" or something similar with a negative value of the amount cancelled.

I put March 20 in my client letter as the cutoff date, but I started warning people at the beginning of March that I was behind but hoped to get everyone done that I got in by the 20th. Many of my returns I have to at least work up to make sure they don't owe or determine a balance to pay with the extension, and often a first quarter estimate too. I'm trying to get people done who have been waiting three weeks. The first two weeks of April I devote to extensions. And I hope to have an April 15 like John's. I've had a few, but often I'm running my own figures to get my extension done!
  9. Or substantially similar. CA started recognizing out of state marriages & DPs years ago.
  10. NJ has very weird filing rules, you file a resident return for the part of the year you are a resident, and a non resident return for any NJ source income received while a non resident. If filing joint, all the spouse's NR income is considered resident. So my solution to that would be to file separate which is allowed if the spouse is not a resident for the whole year. Then I file an NR to report the house sale. CA I can file joint and exclude the earnings in NJ before the move. NJ confers the full benefits of marriage on civil union partners from what I've read. I'm going to post on the LGBT tax list serve, but you're right, I'd do it anyways.
  11. Cool. I was going to do the update last night and forgot.
  12. Why do you say that? Please point me to the cite.
  13. I'm working in a multi state return right now, and there's no problem with slowness. But last night I was in a return with both stock sales & a rental and the slowness was irritating.
  14. Yup. But don't be surprised if she comes back a flaming liberal. Davis is known for that. But an absolutely lovely town, more bikes than cars.
  15. I just got my first one of these! Habitat for Humanity's letter detailed exactly what shares were donated and the FMV on the date of donation, plus what they sold it for (a bit less). Part A of the 8283, which surprised me a bit.
  16. Likely doing much needed laundry and packing to leave for San Francisco on the 17th for a very long weekend. But I have at least two clients that want to meet with me while I'm there! Write off some of it? Then back for payroll and off to Orlando for another week.
  17. Astoria is part of Queens which is a borough of NYC. Got no idea why the employer didn't withhold.
  18. Tom, I had two rejects already from that damn 3801.
  19. My new clients are a same sex couple who are former NJ residents. They became a civil union in NJ, and that relationship is recognized in CA. Partner A got a job in CA and moved in late December 2011. Partner B retired from his job in NJ and moved to CA June 30, 2012. their house in NJ sold in late September. For me, the CA is easy! I know I have to file a resident return for partner A for half the year; can I file joint, even though Partner B has no NJ source income for the period? I know I file NR for the second half of the year for both to take care of the NJ source income from the sale. I can't seem to find an allocation schedule or form that goes with the NJ1040; only one for the NR. HELP!

    NEW ATX

Wasn't someone on this board involved in the process?
  21. And you didn't even have to buy his practice! Double score!
  22. Never show my face in Starbucks again! ROFLMAO!!!
  23. Bathing is one of the 5 factors for assisted living to qualify for medical & LTC reimbursement.
  24. Yeah, I got some more HRB former clients this year. Came in first for a consult to see what selling one of their Hawaiian rentals would mean to the bottom line. I found errors in the previous returns (like no Hawaiian return filed)'. Even with the sale and two states it came to less than what they were charged last year. And I bumped my fees up this year. .
  25. Not if you take program updates off of auto update. They did try to make everyone get to at least one point of update. There are still people out there running 12.8 (or older) per the other board. At some point tech can't deal with problems if people refuse to update at all.
