  1. You're in the blush of a new relationship, giddy and in love. Right now I'm in the middle of one of my biggest nonRDP returns. And there's not only foreign interest & dividends but a foreign rental too. This is where all those foreign allocation worksheets come into play. What kind of returns do you do primarily? I tested drake with the foreign income exclusion & CA tax. It added back the foreign exclusion twice in CA, and there wasn't any way of getting it out again. That's where I started to say, whoa, maybe this isn't the software for me.
  2. The checkbox problem only showed up with 12.10. I am running a lot faster, especially with printing, at 12.11. A lot of the weird little stuff seems to be settling down, and I'm discovering a lot in the program as I work with it, that makes what at first seemed to be glitches (wrong prior depreciation) into benefits as I learn what the program is doing and why.
  3. I had some that were 1 or 2 KB, but all of those had other backups ( ATX does 5) that seemed fine. I also online backup To iDrive each night, which also keeps 5 copies. Am I safe?
  4. Thanks, Jack. Seasonal help for the first time! She's running to the post office while I'm doing returns. I love it.
  5. Hi, I'm doing a return for a couple that luckily only had a $1000 casualty loss from Sandy. As renters they weren't covered for flood damage. Did Sandy victims get relief from the casualty loss haircut, or will my clients get nothing?
  6. Lol, lol, LOL!!!! Thanks KC. Now back to a bunch of stock trades....
  7. I've expensed adding another layer of asphalt shingles, but capitalized ripping off three layers, repairing the substructure and reroofing. This year I'm redoing my roof, a flat roof, but instead of tarpaper & gravel, I'm going with a lifetime new membrane. That's a capitalize. So like so many things in tax & accounting, it's an 'it depends' facts & circumstances answer.
  8. Yeah, once I first efiled a 1099-misc, I said, Never again will I struggle with that damn red form! Hey I'm new to my own payroll. So when do I have to file the 941? Or with it really low, do I just do a 944?
  9. Joel, sure ATX doesn't do it automatically but you just open the elections, and make the election not to use Form 1116. Been around since that option was available for the FTC. I have very complex FTC returns too, and if you do use the 1116, you have to allocate expenses & income between foreign & domestic. That is YOU not knowing the software or the law or the form. ATX has never been a software for someone that just wants to plug in numbers. One of the things I've liked is that it lets me be a Professional and I do need to know the code & forms. Also, remember I did test drive Drake two years ago. Went to a seminar, and came away impressed, and put the demo on my computer & played around with it. Some things I liked, and some I didn't. I loved the way it would automatically save a PDF copy to your doc manager. When I have time, I do still have Drake 2009 on my computer, and can take a look again.

    SLOW

Does your return have a Sch E in it? If so that s the problem.
  11. Ok, but do they file only MFS, or also RDP returns? Does the form populate for RDP returns?
  12. How do you know when the revamp was started? I'll agree, in hindsight this was a rotten year to pick to revamp. But how we're they to know when they started that the Congress would be so dysfunctional as to delay changes until frikkin! January?? Would you have guessed that? CCH says they've been working on the revamp for two years. I saw a working version of the program last October. Why does everyone seem to think CCH woke up one morning around dec. 31 and said, hey, let's switch ATX all around and really screw with our customers this year?
  13. Raining here after 80 degree days last week. I had to turn the heat on!
  14. That's what I had to do for my first year S.
  15. I hope they fixed whatever was wrong with the Sch. E last night. Any return with it in it slowed down a who,e lot. And moving in the form itself was the slowest I've ever seen it. I read posts here on my iPad while waiting for each field to enter. And my 'complete disposition' box wouldn't stay checked.
  16. I'm not having nearly as many issues as others and that's my setup. If you don't need a network, I'd go to standalone.
  17. Oh I take pride in being weird. Face it, we're in this business aren't we?! But the comment was referring to our similar experiences with the program this year. Must be doing something right, but for the life of me, I have no idea what, aside from not running a network and having decent computers with Win7.
  18. When you fill in the 'amount rolled over' box, it prints ROLLOVER next to line 15a on the return. If the taxpayer gets a notice, you can counter with the statements showing the date withdrawn & the date deposited, plus the 5498.
  19. Ron & I still seem to be having identical experiences. Weird, but good. My print manager is populating noticeably faster, and my print previews too. Since printing is my biggest drag on my work, I'm glad I updated.
  20. I did 12.11 last night and actually got 3 returns open at the same time. You have to download a separate utility to get the checkbox thing fixed. The utility works on 12.10 too. Oh, and the print manager populating was noticeably faster too.
  21. Dell & HP have an option to get Win7 too, especially in their biz computers.
  22. Is the new account an IRA? Then you put the rollover amount in the 'amount rolled over' box right under box 2 in ATX. You don't change the 1099-R.
  23. Cross your fingers, I just updated to 11. It's installing 129 forms right now, tick tock, tick tock....
  24. I've used the restore function when the program froze during printing. One tip, when the program freezes and you close it through he task manager, ATX will ask you if you want to save the return you're trying to close. DON'T SAVE IT! The only times I've had issues is when I've saved. Saving during a freeze up appears to corrupt the file.
  25. He didn't see it in the list of transmitted forms and called. They told him it was NOT supported for efile. So I've got a Drake user who filed an RDP return without the form showing up in his list of forms. Who do I believe?
