Dear MsTabbyKats: You have my prayers for a full and swift recovery. I am very glad you found a good buyer so quickly; the last thing you need is to be worrying about a business. Take care of yourself, and keep posting here! We will support you, listen to you -- and you can take pot shots as those of us who have not (yet?) high-tailed it for the nearest faraway place from taxes. Margaret said everything else I would have said, and she said it better than I would have.4 points

Watch out for the update appearing in your list of regular updates. I have my setting to inform me of updates but wait for me to select and install the updates. Recently I saw the W10 update and it was pre-checked. I had to uncheck it.4 points

Dear MsTabby Kats, I am so sorry to hear of this development. I certainly pray for the outcome predicted and congratulate you on your decision to step away from unneeded stress. How wonderful that things with your practice worked out so well and so quickly! Sometimes it seems this was just waiting in the wings and right choice. I do hope this doesn't mean we won't still be hearing from you. When you are back to normal, do let us know and let us support you on the journey. And let the buyer know of this great group, too. Hugs from afar...4 points

I believe if you cancel your reserved copy (if you had reserved a copy) of windows 10, then uninstall KB3035583, and then hide KB3035583. you should not have a problem. Microsoft re-released KB3035583 not that long ago so I had to hide it twice. You uninstall updates at Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Windows Update\View update history. You hide an update by right clicking and choosing hide.2 points

Thanks for the well wishes...... I've been getting very frustrated the past few years....with being "the tax police" for eitc....."obamacare".....no phone service at IRS.....and the list goes on. I had been trying to phase out......and as soon as I heard the C word....I cancelled anything I ordered for the upcoming season and wrote an "away message" on my e-mail with a couple of referrals. The man who bought the business is absolutely perfect for my clientele. And for those who can't/won't/don't e-mail....he has an office in the most convenient and central location here. Finding him, and a quick sale was truly a sign from the cosmos........... (It took DH 6 years to sell his business...at a price much lower than he wanted.)2 points

It's beautiful. Thanks for sharing. I would like to point out though that Stacy Westfall is neither deaf nor mute. That is definitely Stacy riding though, and she is a well-known pro trainer and competitor in the reining world, and she also does these exhibitions without tack and has done it with a few horses now. Here's a piece she wrote about that email that is circulating: http://westfallhorsemanship.com/2011/09/22/stacy-westfall-deaf-mute/2 points

Sorry to hear that, I know exactly how it feels to hear the C word, and don't wish it on anyone. But I'll keep you in mt prayers, and hope all the news stays good going forward. And I think you made the right business decision too. Time to focus on what really matters, and step away from the stress of tax season. But don't drop us, you are still welcome here!2 points

I could not say it better. Margaret and Judy expressed my thoughts eloquently. My prayers are with you and with your family and with your whole medical team. And, you're always a member of this community.2 points

Another "Thank You" to jmdaviscpa. I just shared that info with my tech support and he was happy to get it. He had actually called me because of the issue, just as I was reading that board. I was able to tell him which file to remove and he can use that for all the other clients who do not want Win 10. This board is awesome.1 point

This excerpt is from an ATX informational notice and although pertaining from BUSINESS, it seems to reflect to all individual returns too. As I read it, it means that any Social Security number that has need of / requires an IP pin whether as primary, secondary, dependent, etc. --- that the IP Pin will be required to be listed on the return when filed. Your comments and confirmation or disagreement of my understanding would be appreciated. EXCERPT: IP PIN Business Rules. The IRS has announced that there are new Modernized e-File (MeF) 1040 business rules related to the Identity Protection PIN (TAXDAY, 2015/10/05, I.4). Beginning January 1, 2016, the IRS will require the use of Identity Protection PINs for all Social Security Numbers (SSNs) with an IP PIN requirement, regardless of whether the SSN is entered for a primary, spouse or dependent/qualifying individual.1 point

jmdaviscpa, thanks for referencing the KB # again and making it easy to find and uninstall again. From my list, that update came in again on 10/6, so about 2 weeks ago on my list. I also have my update settings to allow me to review the updates before installing.1 point

The results of my annual mammogram were not good....I have a small malignant mass. It's very small, not an aggressive form of cancer, and after a lumpectomy and radiation treatment I should be "back to normal". However, as soon as I heard "cancer" I decided that I had enough with my business. I found an established CPA looking to expand on Craigslist last Thursday. We spent a few minutes on the phone; he came here on Sunday....and in 1 hour and 40 minutes...we shook hands. I'm happy with the price; he's happy with the client list (he already got a new client who was referred to me).1 point

We've already bantered about the personality types of those who bring in their tax docs on April 10 or later--disorganized, usually owe a lot, didn't open the envelopes, etc. Now let's amaze about those who habitually go on extension and don't show up until Oct 10 or later. The past month has been a constant stream of emails and faxes. Tell the client you are missing 10 items so they send one. After reminding them they send another. Eventually, some day you get them all (minus one or two, but you may have missed that email). Today I finally got the numbers on a client's foreign pension, but he neglected to tell me if he was reporting foreign currency or US dollars. Another email...... Another owns a huge business and dabbles in a few smaller ones. Brought in two huge volumes of records on Oct 13 but "forgot" to bring one of the businesses. Guess he'll be late. Or the client with a dozen rental properties who finally gave me all the income and expenses but neglected to bring every single other tax doc (pensions, IRAs, bank interest, dividends, you name it). Of course they can't find that paperwork because they got it in January and "put it somewhere." Today a client comes in with his dad's stuff--it's a pretty basic return, nothing fancy. Dig into it and find three documents are missing. Why am I surprised. Sent a client two separate emails today, one with the returns and one with the two documents to be signed and faxed back. So what do I get? One signed doc (not the 8879, the one I really need to file). Another went back and forth 3 times about whether they wanted to send a check or have the balance due direct debited. Every single email I requested the signed docs and it's like they never read beyond the first line. Finally sent a dedicated email today asking for the signatures and actually got them. You wonder how these people even get out of bed in the morning. Oct 15ers have it way over April 15ers in disorganization, disinterest, confusion, carelessness, not following directions. Oh yea, they also rank in amounts they owe. A client just brought in a pile of stuff where I found my carefully prepared voucher with instructions highlighted and envelope attached for a $14k estimate that was supposed to have been made in January. April people may owe a few grand. Oct people owe in the 6 figures. One more day.... (Well, we'll still have a dozen or so like Mr two volumes that will just be late. But it's October--sales taxes, payroll reports, assessor reports. Those returns will just have to wait a little longer.)1 point

I had my own return finished, but I always like a final look over before hitting the button. One of my perennial late filers got caught on I-80 on the wrong side of an accident that closed the freeway for over 10 hours. She found a way around and I got her filed around 9pm. Got a couple 8879s in TODAY that had been mailed from Oakland on the 14th. This is someone under the age of 30. Snail mail, really? Why not just take a damn picture with your cell and text it to me like some of my much older clients will?1 point

Once again we confuse an IRS statement with the English language. Just as a qualifying relative need not be a relative, so a Business Rule need not refer to a business. Rather, it is a term of art that relates to the permitted and prohibited relationships in a data structure. Typical business rules might require that MFJ returns have a valid SSN for the secondary taxpayer, or that the AGI equal the gross income less the adjustments. See Pub 4164 (222 pages)1 point

There was a real run on fraudulent CT returns this year. CT did jump on that and started sending out letters asking for information when they had suspicions. I did get the CT and IL acknowledgements back this afternoon. Happy for that since we owe CT and were doing direct debit. Didn't want the payment to be very late. The state returns were never rejected, just not submitted when the federal was rejected. So, aren't the states late since I didn't retry before midnight? And, isn't my direct debit a day late? I'll make hubby stand in line at the PO on Monday to get our return weighed and mailed with a check. That payment will be late also. Or not late, since return was rejected? It's not as big as the one to CT. So glad I always have us owing at least a little, so we're not waiting on our refunds. (IL is a tiny refund, but applying it to ES anyway.)1 point

Lion, you don't need to file the police report with the return, just the 14039 and form showing why you didn't efile. Of the dozen or so clients we efiled in the last couple of days,THREE were rejected as duplicates. Like you, all of them efiled extensions on April 15 that went through just fine, so the theft occurred between April 15 and Oct 15. That puzzles me. I thought the crooks filed like in January to be sure they got in before the real taxpayer. One of our rejects was the state return only. We've had a lot of that this year. The thieves know the IRS is getting better at detecting fraud, so they are just filing states. I haven't tried suppressing the federal returns on the others and just filing the states to see if they go through. Will try that Monday. You will not be considered late if your return was efiled and rejected. You have 5 days or something like that to get it filed. Related to the original topic, had a client walk in TODAY with her tax stuff. And related to this divergence from topic, a visit from another scared old lady who got a call from the IRS threatening to sue her if she didn't pay over $3 grand. I'm so glad she chose to check with us before she paid.1 point

MsTabbyKats, Margaret expressed beautifully and exactly my sentiments in her post above. I wish you well on your journey through treatments, that it is without complication and is as pain-free as is possible, and that your return to full health is swift. I, too, hope you will keep in touch with us here even though you will no longer be practicing.1 point

Go see your granddaughter. All the latecomers can bloody well WAIT -- after all, they have been making YOU wait for months! As for your own return; send it on paper and file all the "someone used my ssn" paperwork AFTER you cuddle that baby. Consider it an order, so clients who fuss can be told, "Sorry, I am required to be elsewhere."1 point

Judy, I'm so sorry about your dog. Our pets are so important to us and it is so hard when they are sick.1 point

Tackled one today where the client took $450k out of his IRA and never told me about it!!! He owes $100k+ and says he doesn't have it. How the heck did he spend $450k within the year? I just hope he has enough left to pay for tax prep. We are having a staff meeting next week to talk about training clients better, giving them deadlines, and finally being firm about them.1 point

I wouldn't put it on a C, he is not employed by flipping this house. I wouldn't use an E, it is not rental property. The Sch D is the only place I would have put it. It is clearly investment property. I don't usually chime in, so wait for another opinion.1 point

I was working until about 4 a.m. Put in a support request around 4 and started to close things down to go to bed. An email popped up from support acknowledging my question, and then another email popped up from support before I could close Outlook. They answered my question! (They have people working in all different time zones around the globe.) I reopened software and followed their instructions. So, I went to bed around 5 a.m. for a few hours with one less worry. Love ProSystem fx. Lost a couple of days in October, so running later than I'd scheduled. Granddaughter was conveniently due 1 November. But, daughter-in-law got gestational hypertension leading to preeclampsia and then HELLP (liver), so we went to visit for a couple of days between her hospital stays. Hugged them as they went off to doctor appointments (over the mountains and through the woods an hour away to Scranton) and came back to CT last Tuesday night. Wednesday morning my son called to say he was scrubbing up to go into the delivery room! C-section Wednesday 7 October resulted in Avery James Franciose at 8:47 a.m. at 18.25" and 5 lbs. 12 oz. Avery is perfect, but she is still jaundiced. Hari Beth is still recuperating; back for more bloodwork today. So, she's not up to visitors yet. Haven't held Avery yet. November!1 point

At the firm, we just signed for a FedEx overnight package with information for a return. Nearly 40 pages of documents. It will NOT be completed or filed before Wednesday of next week.1 point
