  1. And, of course, a bill for $180 for preparing the amended return to claim the $150 refund...

  2. No just send the Sch D. And you should only send a 1040 with a 1040X when it's a number that only shows on the 1040 like an IRA contribution or foreign tax credit that doesn't need an 1116. And you're supposed to type “Attachment to Form 1040X—Copy Only—Do Not Process” at the top of any forms.

  3. I had one client who came in about 15 years ago to interview us a change from current preparer. Never did see him or here from him for a couple of years. called one day and wanted us to do his return. Developed relationship etc, after a few years of him always being late and on extension, I asked him why he quit the other firm. " they always wanted to put it on extension". He passed away this spring and is on extension. Late to own funeral.

  5. I only send the page that has a change and write at the bottom - "As amended". So in your case, I would have a 1040X, 1040 as amended, Schedule D as amended and the one page of the 8949 as amended. Seven pages in total. If the IRS wants more info, they will ask. I have only had two cases in my 30 plus years of practice where the IRS asked for additional info. I guess my disclaimer for the above is that I do not know if there are any other pages in the return that changed because of this change. If so, I would do the same procedure.

  6. I don't have many of those guys anymore, but a funny thing about them was that when they showed up on April 15th most wanted it done IMMEDIATELY. I'd say I couldn't do it that day but could get an extension for them. Most would reply "Oh, I don't like to get extensions - I want to file ON TIME."

  7. Yep! Human nature doesn't change from year to year. Early filers are most always early filers. Late filers are mostly late filers. And if the filing dates were changed to allow more time, the last minute filers would sill be last minute filers. When extensions that were only allowed to Aug 15, were changed to Oct 15, we tried to keep this info from the late filers and it worked for a uear or two, until they found out about it. So, you all know what happened. The Aug filers now became Oct filers, even with two additional months allowed.

  10. The main problem is trusting that the financial advisor knows what they are doing. (most don't) Everything else falls under the heading of "Inevitable Consequences"

  11. Gosh! What a criminal mastermind. Wonder how we'd defend ourselves if we were exposed as NOT being pillars of the community? Maybe if we began feverishly working at a soup kitchen, strictly attending all Little League games, send the mayor a birthday card, adopt an intersection, or right away start flogging the church door at least three times a week. Darn; he'd have ME anyway though - I'm NOT a CPA. Now what?

  12. Yeah, I forgot about the 1310. There would be a little bit more in there for the 1310. Tom Newark, CA

  13. I've never used mailing slips for anything with any software I've ever used. I don't see the point. We use usps.com priority mail and print label and pay for the postage in one step. The envelopes are free too! Added benefit: address gets verified. Edit: The only con is you can't just use first class. But I want a tracking service anyway, when I mail something to a client.

  14. My favorite laughing moment is when clients come in with three years that need completed. Without fail, these are the words: "I just have not had time...." Then, when I file the extension for 15, do a quick scan to see if they should send in a payment before the due date, and put their whole stack at the back of the queue, they get irate. "I will not have time to do your old returns until I have completed all 2015 returns" is my response. "I just do not have the time to fix your extreme procrastination situation." I do this, no matter when these kind of clients come in.

  15. They think you have nothing else to do, just waiting for them to walk in the door. Must be part of the breakdown of society I've been hearing about.

  16. Exactly. The COD becomes income and this is decided at the PTP level as how it is treated. PTP's have a requirement that a certain amount of income (90%) be qualifying income - interest dividends, rents - otherwise it is taxed as a corp. The IRS allows the option for COD to be used as qualifying income. So, I think that at the partner's level, the only out on 982 would be insolvency.

  18. So many companies are switching to virtually effortless contact via the internet. Bizarre when a company is going the opposite direction. I tend to avoid those companies because I don't want to be bothered by their games. I have no problem with renewal notices - I appreciate it. Not intrusive contact. I've already renewed my software for next year so the basic renewal notices are valued by me. I don't do physical trips onsight for tax training. Doesn't make sense for me to travel to another location when online training works just as effectively.

  19. I retired and sold what was left of my practice to another CPA. The only calls I've had from former clients was one woman who got an e-mail saying she owed tax and they were sending the police after her if she didn't pay them. I told her I had gotten the same call, The other call was from a man who needed the password to open his return I'd prepared. Their new CPA must be doing a good job.
