  2. I bill who ever brings me the tax return. If the child is old enough to bring me his/her tax return, then they get the bill. If the child's stuff is in with the parents return, I bill the parents. I always like to make sure the dependency issues are correct between parents, children and college etc... Rich

  4. It is a good feeling to know that I just filed my last extension and return. So, I am done and closing shop. I would like all of my friends here to pray for my mother. She is 86 and has just been put in the hospital which is why I 'm closing now. She has PSP (Progressive Supra Nuclear Palsy) and can no longer keep her balance. This mixed with a pretty bad UTI is taking its toll. Undoubtedly, she will be moving to a rest home. PSP is a debilitating disease that is very similar to Parkinson's without tremors. The limbs become almost rigor mortise like, she will loose her voice and her eye sight is affected by limited eye movement and more than moderate sensitivity to light. I hope each of you has had a very prosperous tax season. Take some time and rest up we all deserve it. Thanks,

  6. I love that glue. I collect it and roll all of it together. I have the biggest ball of glue in the entire southwest.

  7. Is it just me, or is the glue ball situation getting better on those? I hate that glue so much. And when the wheels on your chair hit a glue ball that missed the trash can as you're sliding between desks it's a *#$%@.

  8. I am not on the hook for anything. My clients have the "right to remain silent" in regards to discloser of health coverage. Furthermore, the IRS will "ACCEPT" the return as being compete as a result of the executive order. Then, after accepting the return with out requiring the taxpayer to make a disclosure in regards to health care coverage, the IRS can certainly make a written inquiry but they cannot access any penalties for failure to check a box the taxpayer wasn't required to check. Also, under Code Sec. 5000A(g)(2) and Reg. § 1.5000A-5(b), a taxpayer is not subject to any criminal prosecution or penalty for failure to timely pay the individual mandate penalty, and IRS can’t file a notice of lien with respect to any property of a taxpayer because of his failure to pay the individual mandate penalty or levy on any property of a taxpayer with respect to that failure. But IRS may offset any liability for the shared responsibility payment against any overpayment due the taxpayer, in accordance with Code Sec. 6402(a) and its regs. And even if they do throw me in the slammer, I am not the least bit concerned since I made a pact with Rita and she will bust me out.

  9. I put it on the parents' bill until they tell me not to. I also prepare a few pro bono returns for kids in school with their part time jobs. Figure they'll be making money soon enough and I'll be needing younger clients as the old ones....no longer need to file.

  10. Note to self- you need to step back and relax. It's all on extension. Breathe. Take a little break. Remember that candy ain't gonna crush itself.

  12. I love it when they take the stuff out of the envelopes (that they had opened with the yard shears) and then staple the one piece of paper that we need to the envelope along with all of the other contents of the envelope.... and then they make notes on the paper and the envelopes.... so you don't dare toss the stuff!

  13. I got a paper cut from a manila folder Tuesday. Has nothing to do with this thread, but I'm lonely and need sympathy from my interweb friends. It hurt so bad...

  16. TaxWise doesn't have a site like this, but the software isn't really a problem for me. I have loved this message board SO MUCH. Everyone is so helpful and KIND. Thanks, Rita, for the invite, and for loving and not hugging me. I would certainly donate to keep this board up and running.

  18. I have no idea. I say, try it, today, to see what happens. It it rejects, then send in a paper 4868 with a copy of the rejection notice.

  19. The real remedy for paper cuts is super glue. Works like a charm. Pull the cut wide and put a drop in, the squeeze the cut shut, being careful not to glue your fingers together. Paper cuts hurt because of the air getting to the raw skin. Super glue seals all that up.

  20. E-file the extension as well. If you need proof of filing the extension, the only thing the IRS will accept is the electronic confirmation.

  21. If you're in this business long enough you'll have a slew of clients' kids who are either living at home, on their own, and with college degrees, some going to grad school, who become your new clients. I find them neglectful in timely returning authorization forms so I start contacting them April 1st so I don't get jammed up this week (like that works). When I get the forms back many times there is no check. Now I have to contact them again and the answer I hear is so common, "I thought my parents paid." When I was in their position I wouldn't even think of asking my parents for anything because I knew the answer would be no,

  22. Dear taxxcpa, I extend my apologies; I didn't really mean to be so short and snippy - bad day (or rotten disposition my better half says) I guess. You've got a point though; it is kind of like passing up $75 laying on the ground. On the other hand, like Jack said - I cain't hardly get 'em to sit down and shut up in less than five minutes

  30. I jumped to Drake last year. ATX put on a press to get me back this year. Told me they could easily beat Drake and offered me a super special deal--$50 off the current price (which was $300 more than Drake). I passed. The previously hyper friendly sales agent suddenly adopted a whole new attitude and hung up. Sooo glad I made the jump last year. Prep time with Drake is about 2/3 what it was with ATX and support is phenomenal. I really enjoyed ATX for the 20 or so years I used it (and its predecessor)--especially in the early (pre-CCH) days. But I can't imagine leaving Drake now. Wish I'd done it ten years ago when I first thought about it. Oh, did I mention they haven't had a price increase in years?

  32. I think you are fine - they might return it to be written on - but it should not be rejected for that and if so - tax advocate will go to bat - at least in WI mho D i have about 12 - 2013's to do and of course I did not mark them clearly if actually printed and mailed !!!

  33. Tax Topics 356 says toward the bottom: "If you're a surviving spouse filing a joint return and there's no appointed personal representative, you should sign the return and write in the signature area 'Filing as surviving spouse.' A surviving spouse can file joint returns for the taxable year in which the death occurred and, if the death occurred before filing the return, for the taxable year immediately before the year of death." Makes me think the "Deceased Blah, Blah" not printing on a 2013 return when the DOD was in 2015 might be ok.

  34. I find it very puzzling, for a lot of them it's like they place very little importance on the whole process. I suspect that if they could do it all on their smartphone, it would all fall into place quickly.

  36. Those were my exact sentiments for this client I am working on! The SSA and the OPM 1099Rs.... at least with the 1099s, there are several copies ... so when they have ripped off half of the figures , at least there are other copies that may have the figures intact

  39. Perhaps some of our newer members don't know the story of how this fab forum got started, or realize that it is privately owned and maintained by Eric. One of the benefits of private ownership is that it can't be controlled by any one software company or its policies. Eric is not in the tax business, and he takes the time and his own funds to provide this space for us. If this forum and its members have helped you in any way, by answering questions, guiding you to areas to research, or just knowing that we are all going through the same things, please think of the value of that benefit that you've received for free and please consider making a donation.

  41. New client just picked up 2013 return. Refund in excess of $10,000. Has to be mailed. Husband died in Oct 2015. I entered his DOD, and "Filing as Surviving Spouse" printed in TP signature box. "Deceased Blah, Blah, Blah" did NOT print at top. Why not? I figured it had something to do with the death being two years in the future, if you know what I mean. Now it is worrying me to death. Should I write that in (Deceased Blah, Blah...) and have her mail a second return today? I rolled over the 2013 return and opened 2014, and the "Deceased Blah, Blah" DID show at top. This is worrying me to death that she's going to lose that refund over something stupid. Of course, it is the ultimate in stupidity for her to wait until NOW to file, but that won't matter. It will be my fault. Everything is our fault.

  42. Unless the taxpayer elects to treat all properties as one entity, then the determination of being a real estate professional must be determined on each property individually. Real estate professionals are not subject to SE tax, and also not subject to the net investment income tax. Maybe this article from The Tax Advisor will help: http://www.thetaxadviser.com/issues/2014/jul/skarbnik-july2014.html
