  1. I usually send client to IRS website and let them set it up on their own, it's easy enough and no sweat for us.

  2. Yes Margaret, I’m in the same boat as you. I know the program and don’t want to climb the learning curve of another program as this stage. In their defense of an 8.5% increase, they did have to cope with the TCJA which has been called the biggest tax rewrite in 30 years. Im listed here as a newbie but I’ve been using tax for 14 years.

  3. I incorrectly stated my price as $1610, but it was $1809. I don't think everyone gets the same price. People negotiate, scream, curse, and threaten to hold their breath. Not sure which course I will take but the increase doesn't seem fair. Social Security only increased about 3%. Not like we're getting any added value. Program still has its problems but we stay because we.......I don't know, you finish the sentence.

  6. Neither mean or crabby, it looks to me that you are avoiding penalties for yourself. Learned a long time ago you can't save clients from penalties when they don't follow our advice. The link is from a Forbes article that appears to be on point to your situation. Topic Number 513 is from the IRS website. https://www.forbes.com/sites/anthonynitti/2016/12/21/tax-geek-wednesday-deductibility-of-professional-education-expenses/#26ff2b974fc4 Topic Number 513 - Work-Related Education Expenses You may be able to deduct work-related education expenses paid during the year. To be deductible, your expenses must be for education that (1) maintains or improves your job skills or (2) a law requires to keep your status or occupation. However, even if the education meets either of these tests, the education can't be part of a program that will qualify you for a new trade or business or that you need to meet the minimal educational requirements of your trade or business. Although the education must relate to your present work, education expenses incurred during temporary absence from your job may also be deductible. After your temporary absence, you must return to the same kind of work. Usually, absence from work for one year or less is considered temporary. Expenses that you can deduct include: Tuition, books, supplies, lab fees, and similar items Certain transportation and travel costs, and Other educational expenses, such as the cost of research and typing To determine if your work-related expenses are deductible, see Are My Work-Related Education Expenses Deductible? Self-employed individuals include education expenses on Form 1040, Schedule C.pdf, Profit or Loss From Business (Sole Proprietorship), Form 1040, Schedule C-EZ.pdf, Net Profit From Business (Sole Proprietorship) or Form 1040, Schedule F.pdf, Profit or Loss From Farming. For more information on work-related education expenses, education tax credits, or information for specific types of employees, such as performing artists, refer to Publication 970, Tax Benefits for Education. Also, for additional information about education benefits, review Tax Benefits for Education: Information Center and Am I Eligible to Claim an Education Credit?

  7. On the other hand, I have met other accountants who previously could not get any health insurance due to pre-existing conditions. For people like them, the ACA has been a lifesaver! So, yes it's a PITA, but it's saved the lives of many of our fellow citizens.

  8. I'm not sure screaming and cursing will work. I might try begging and pleading, though. My offer for just 1040 went up 8.5% and that all -important processing fee went from $59 to $69. They would save a bundle if only they wouldn't ship out those outdated MTG's and other tax books. I guess the downloaded electrons cost something. And I wonder whether that bargain price of only $250 more for MAX will be floated next March. Frankly, it's just easier for me as I phase out my practice to stick around as this program is a known beast to me since 1998. To save $75 now, though, to renew early is most likely what I will do. I just wonder about the justification for such a raise. Yep, my SS and IRA draws aren't up to 8.5% increases or 16.9% for 'processing.'

  10. HH bonds could only be purchased by exchanging E or EE bonds. One of the features was to defer the accrued interest on the E or EE bonds and pay the tax due when the HH bonds matured. When a decedent owns savings bonds at death the accrued interest can be either reported on the decedent's final return or the beneficiary of the bonds pays the interest. Please see treasurydirect.gov website for additional information.

  11. Client can pay each month. Yes, there is a discounted interest rate for direct debit payments.

  12. I'm thinking you get a lower interest rate if direct debit, but that's not really what you asked. Sorry, don't know your answer.

  16. The renewal notice for 2019 Max that I received a couple of days ago indicates $1610 BEFORE shipping and sales tax for a total of $1809. Does every one get the same price?

  17. You just have to follow the guidelines for the deduction of "out of pocket expenses" as a volunteer . Under the TCJA, there is no way to deduct unreimbursed employee expenses with the elimination of "misc itemized expenses subject to 2 %".

  18. I think that I am right, but I'm getting push back, because everyone else says that I'm wrong. Real Estate School and the fees to get licensed are not deductible on a Sch C if this is the first time that you have ever tried are they? There has not been any income, but turned in over $4k of expenses, plus mileage, and office in home. I am tired and just want to say WTF! I had no idea that all of this was in this return from a long time client. I don't even know if anything but the licenses can/or should be amortized. I don't know why buy all of this crap if you have made no money. Rant over! Please just be gentle if I am wrong. I am pretty sick of this year. Thanks!

  30. No, everyone does not get the same price. The person I recommended two years ago gets a better price than me and I have been with them since the beginning. She paid 995.00 for the MAX program and I paid 1595. thus year. I think it depends on who your rep. is.
