They have a CA rental and no depreciation schedule. This is a good day. Catch and release is a beautiful thing. Sad about their manila folder, but casualties occur at times.10 points

I had a feeling he wouldn't go to the other preparer, so first thing this morning I got all their paperwork together, extracted my notes, and sure enough, he came in and said they thought it best to just let the other preparer do it. What do we owe you for your time? Me: Not a thing, and that's a great solution. Thank you. Here is your paperwork. He: Didn't we bring it in a [manilla] folder? You all know how happy I am to not have this client, don't you?7 points

My package, ATX 1040, increased by 4.8% to $843.59. The list price jumped from $799 to $839, 5% and the processing fee increased by $3. My discount is still 15%. It does irk me that the other fees are up again, not by much but it adds up. I don't do business returns any longer but do need more than 3 states for a handful of outliers, good long term clients. That has increased, too, but I don't want to lose those clients. And it gets earlier all the time. Last year's renewal notice has a quote date of April 1. This year's 'document date' is March 6 although just received last week. As I wind down my practice, though, I will stick with what I've known since 1997. I am beyond nickle and diming and appreciate familiarity. And, frankly, I can afford this and still have enough to fund my dive trips, especially having saved money in 2020. Now going in March 2022 as Indonesia is still closed. I may even spring for first class tickets this time!3 points

If its an ordinary meal for himself because he has to eat, and he is in his "tax home" and not traveling, those meals are not deductible. We all work more than that and wish our meals were deductible too. To be deductible, the meal must have a business purpose and must be ordinary and necessary. If it is for entertainment or recreation, those meals would not be deductible. He would need the log that includes all of the items you mentioned plus the stated purpose and name(s) of the people he met and dined with. He would also need the receipts for the expenditures.3 points

The dirty little secret of 1116 is that even when it's not required to be filed, the calculation must still be done. Many of us, including me, choose to ignore that when we're under the 1116 filing requirement limits. ATX has a checkbox to facilitate using the 1116 for the calculation but not including it in the return.2 points

I told my new client at drop off I needed the Depreciation Schedule. Crickets. I mailed them a letter last week telling them I have to have the depreciation schedule, and I sent three sample depreciation schedules, cause they are not the sharpest never mind. I said I'd be happy to look thru old tax returns if they would bring them in, but the easiest thing for all us would be to ask the 2019 preparer for the Depreciation Schedule. He just brought in four years of Schedule E's, one of which I had. Me: Go to the preparer's office now. Walk in there, now, and ask for the Depreciation Schedule. Now. He: Ok. Otherwise how's it looking?2 points

It seems they send these out earlier and earlier every year. And no, I have no plans to renew before season is even over.2 points

They have NO idea how lucky they were not to become YOUR casualty.1 point

I only prepare three trusts, and at least one of them has no foreign income. Tonight's trust has, in round numbers... $2,500 income, all dividends and interest $1,000 foreign dividends $50 foreign tax paid I was expecting $50 to be deducted from the tax liability, but it ends up being a ratio of 1000/2500 X 50 = foreign tax credit. The trust doesn't get credit for the full $50 foreign taxes it paid. Is that right? (I know I'm tired and not thinking straight.)1 point
-
Yes, I have that checkbox, too. On personal returns, the ratio just tickled at the back of my mind. $30 of foreign credit from thousands of dollars of investments with thousands of dollars w/h from large W-2s meant that whether they received $30 FTC or $19 FTC, it made no dent in their refunds or balances due. This was a new-to-me complex trust last year and made less than $1,000 then. I'll look up if it had any FTC last year. This year it earned over $2,500, so a balance due rears it ugly head. I have one other complex trust with no foreign income; it owns a commercial building. And, a third that might have a FTC but earns a lot and always owes a lot, and -- hopefully -- I've done it right in the past. It will be next up when I can get this one signed and e-filed. Thank you Abby and Margaret for confirming for me how FTC is calculated. I was hoping I was wrong, but I'd gone through the form and instructions before I posted and could see what it was doing and why.1 point

No K-1. Complex trust; nothing distributed; trust pays taxes. About $26 but trustee is complaining! Thank you, Mr. Normal. I may have missed the ratio last year, but trust made much, much less then. In 2020, it made over $2,500 so the FTC would've wiped out all US tax if it could've been used in full. Oh well. Right now, I'd pay $26 to get a return off my desk! Every. Single. Return. has something different this year, has me explaining to clients, has them asking more questions before they'll sign. The trustee's wife complained, "We don't do a thing with it. I'm surprised she's made enough money on it this year to owe taxes since we haven't taken anything out. Want to check and then we can talk about the payment?" So, I wanted confirmation that the trust does NOT get the full credit for ALL foreign taxes paid but only the ration of foreign income to worldwide income times the foreign taxes paid.1 point

Yes. My rate jumped up quite a bit. In the ATX Facebook group, people are discussing their renewal letters. Quotes for the max package seem to range from $1,200 - $2,0001 point

About an hour north of Syracuse. They have 100+ employees. Never would have thought collecting stamps could be that big of a business.1 point

When I reconstructed, part of what I did was look at the 4562s looking for what kind of stuff was added & when.1 point

Thanks Judy. That is exactly what I had told the client. The issue came up because the client was a referral from another tax person who had given the client false information. I just needed confirmation that I wasn't missing something, because there is substantial amount involved.1 point

For the 4th time my e-services account has had attempted and failed access thus locked - again - for 24 hours. Why me? The only good thing is that it means access was denied to whoever is trying this. Just so frustrating! It's good the sun is shining today and 69 degrees plus a good workout, finally, back at the gym so my mood isn't as bad as it could be. Hope your Monday is going well!1 point

ILLMAS, this has nothing at all to do with the browser I use. I have always used IE per IRS 'requirements' until this last attempted breach when the agent at the help desk told me to use Chrome. And this happened because of the previous attempted hack and I had to reset my password. It isn't me trying unsuccessfully to login and failing. It's someone else trying to hack in. PaulH, the help desk agent said I could not change my username but maybe I will ask again. I mean, with 4, count 'em, 4 hack attempts, it seems that I should be able to do that. Bank accounts, etc. are much easier, in my opinion, to change but it is appropriate for IRS to make it this hard. I'm just tired of being the victim of an e-services hack. I'll stop complaining now. It's 73 and sunny, a beautiful day. I just need to get this fixed soon to check on some 2848's I uploaded recently.1 point

Don't know if e-services will allow this, but when that happened to my bank account several times, I changed my username to a random string (basically a second password), and it hasn't happened since.1 point

Good luck, Catherine. I know that there was no way that ATX would let me around the 1310 and it didn't matter how many or which boxes that I chose. This is such a time waster and the fact that the IRS is so far behind, just makes my clients ticked at me even though I have no control over any of it. ATX just tried to get me to add a 1310N to a surviving spouse return, but thankfully, it wasn't a red error and I could create the efile. Bonnie1 point

If the prior accountant is a CPA licensed by the state a call to the state licensing department (or threat to do same) might provide the push to provide the necessary information.1 point

Try Mystic Stamp company in New York. They buy whole collections. My wife happens to work there.1 point

As it happens this info is a Godsend to me as well. My grandfather was a rural delivery person in the 1920's. Among some items he left were 400 postcards from that time period in their original packaging and I need to determine their value.1 point
-
In the past, I've been able to discard a form I didn't want in the efile and create the efile immediately after deleting, before ATX added it back. Haven't needed to do that in a few years.1 point

Yes, it took a LOT to get all the info out of him, but I was happy it was available!1 point
