  2. I've had a bear claw, coffee and now I'm into the Monster energy. Oh and vitamins. I'm pretty good with the pre washed salad though; throw a bunch in a bowl (medium sized mixing bowl), sprinkle with some sort of crunchy stuff and dressing. Voila! Dinner. And tangelos. I've been craving those things and they've been 99 cents a pound. I hit 159.6 this morning on the scale, over 15 lbs down since December 5.

  3. I will not investigate, nor will I ever use a cloud based ANYTHING for my tax business. Too much risk. Period.

  4. I just spent over 6 hours on a new clients return that now owe $1,350 due to excess APTC. As they actually purchased a "Gold" plan and therefore should have not even qualified for the APTC (Has to be a Silver plan) to receive. Supposedly their "Navigator" from local county office setup everything for them on the exchange. Estimated half of their income and allowed them to take almost 2X the APTC. 1095-A is correct. A couple with no kids making $43k per year - wife does not work. Of course I am the messenger, so of course it is MY fault. Client wants to get a "second Opinion". Please come and get your tax documents so that you can get your "2nd opinion". And please stop calling every 15 minutes with another question about the same thing I told you during the last conversation regarding this. I have not been able to work on any other return today because of this! Sorry to Vent, the crazy late clients are coming out of the wood work! Then the few I have not heard from decide to drop off at the last minute at the same time! And on a Sunday late afternoon. Of course I have no Family or a life..

  5. Apparently, I'm good at espionage. This anal client I'm working on now gives me COPIES of investment statements with account numbers blacked out. You never know what your accountant might do with those account numbers. Or two copies of a W-2.

  6. Y'all ain't listenin to me and Joan and Margaret. The top of the ATX doohickey is up there in the Twilight Zone off the screen and we gotta fish around for it. Not to get all technical or anything. OMG will this day ever end? I was gonna get eight returns done. Only seven to go!

  7. Yep, one I gave signature pages to days ago just emailed that the very long and detailed list of donations to Goodwill, well it's actually four different lists for four different dates to two different charities. But, she didn't give me the corrections to make. Limbo. And, some I thought I was going to finish are going to move over to Extensions due to all the emails, telephone calls, from everyone else. And, they won't be happy. But, I'm getting unhappy. And, a former IC from a biz client needs a copy of his 2013 1099 and didn't like the copy of the payor copy I emailed him on blank paper and not on the preprinted forms and emailed my client his dissatisfaction. Now the client's emailing me. I really am not going to drive up to that biz this week. Very unhappy. And, ate chocolate, but it just made me jitterier. Really not happy. And, my good halogen lamp that is great light plus heat this winter died. Hubby even went looking at Home Depot for a lamp for me. Kids came in from PA for a day and I was cranky; hubby told them I'm tired to not worry about it. I want another month to catch up! Or, I'm going out to the mailbox to meet Rita.

  9. First order of business here is to obtain the trust instruments and read them completely. Doing so will give great insight as to the related tax issues with the trust.

  11. I refuse to get involved in the discussions about which plan or which company they choose to purchase their health insurance. Those decisions are NOT a tax matter. I am only handling the "shoved down our throats" responsibility of telling them the tax consequences of their choices. Otherwise, another client to fire.

  14. Start selling cosmetics, handbags, cooking utensils, etc via one of the MLM plans. Buy lots of inventory & store it in your home office. Along with all the other great writeoffs, you can deduct the pet food & vet bills for your guard dog (or security cat, as the case may be).

  15. My kitties provide a calming influence to clients, especially when confronted with owing. My dog used to work as a doorbell, but I think she's going deaf. Or is just so old she doesn't care anymore.

  16. I had a 1099 MISC today for rent and not only was the SSN masked for the first 5 digits, the company had masked their own ID number for the first 5 digits. I had to call and get their EIN to enter it for the program. The woman I talked to said "You must be using Turbo Tax." Yeah. Right.

  18. Rita, I am having the same problem. I am so tired of not being able to finish returns. This has been a terrible year for me as far as getting anything done. Even returns that are normally simple, have strange things or missing. An easy one yesterday wrote down $7,500 for Goodwill donations, did not fill out the health insurance questionnaire that I sent them, didn't return engagement letter and forgot their property tax. I'm really getting crabby.

  19. Quick & dirty refresher: If it distributes principal and income it is a complex trust. Income only distributed is a simple trust. If not all the income is distributed, some income stays in the trust to be taxed. Capital gains/losses usually stay in the trust until final return. Always read the trust document.

  22. When I started doing tax returns...in someone's office...his motto was (towards the clients).."Your problem is not my problem"...and that's how we worked. I still refuse to get "out of shape" because someone waits till the final few days with complications.

  23. Carol: I feel for you... Got stuck in the loop with a client like that last night. Single, Sub-contractor. $21k gross, $11k net. Bought a plan thru the marketplace, had a 1095-A. But when you add the 8962 or 8965 forms, it gets stuck in a loop. Screw it, he was covered and his income was lower than the limits... Rich

  25. Well, there ya go. I once had a young lady body builder come in my office on January 31 wanting 1099-Misc Forms to fill out for her client. I got the impressive I was the first person on earth to tell her I was out of forms and not offer to take her to Staples and purchase forms for her.

  30. I still have clients that use ledger paper and their records are some of the best I get. Why is it that people who can NOT balance a checkbook think they can run a business and do the bookkeeping all by their lonesome?!?!

  31. We close the office for Good Friday, open for 4 hours on Saturday and we are never open on Sunday, most especially on Easter. I, on the other hand, will work a full 12 to 13 hours on Friday and Saturday and will take Easter completely off. I am so looking forward to not hearing the phone ring or the door open for nearly three whole days. Don't misunderstand, (which I am certain none of you do), I love my clients and want to talk to them and see them, but enough is enough. This is a nice little break until the final week madness begins. I can hear the caller now. "I picked up my return back in February and I see I have to send a check. Why do I have to send a check? Who do I make it out to? What was the amount again?" I am so grateful that i have staff that can field these calls. Otherwise I would also be at the mailbox where but a short two steps away, semi-trucks buzz by at 50-plus mph.

  33. Same problem here, RitaB. Just about every return I've worked on this season has been missing info. Some here are completed and ready for pickup tomorrow, and everything else has been input and are now waiting for additional last pieces of missing data. Waiting and waiting....

  37. When I was much, much more caffeine addicted, I was at an all-day CPE meeting that was serving decaf, unbeknownst to me. By the mid-morning break I had a splitting headache that would not quit. When I realized what was going on, I first got my fix - and then I went looking for someone else's day to ruin. That just wasn't right.

  38. one client sold the lot adjacent to their principal residence in 2013 then sold their principal residence the next year. Both sales qualified for the taxfrree principal residence sale - there is a special rule for this circumstance IF both sales occur within a 2 year period . I have the documentation at work . Will post when I get to my office.

  40. Yes that is true in other states, but for NY: Additional Benefits for the APTC Premium Payment Program • To use the benefits of the APTC Premium Payment Program and potentially reduce your premium to $0, you must be eligible and select a Silver Level health plan and use the entire amount of your tax credit. You will still be responsible to pay any cost sharing, like co-pays for doctor’s visits or prescriptions. Your maximum out-of-pocket costs may change if you do not select a Silver Level health plan.

  41. The examples given are not the same as my client. 10,000.00 was taken from a Coverdell savings account. No scholarships and the amount paid for the qualified expenses exceed the distribution so I don't see that any of the examples applies here. Thanks for alerting me to this.

  48. I have a client that buys a Dome book where the left side of each page lists every check and deposit, and the right side gives you a place to total by the categories for the month, the year to date before this month, and the year to date after this month. At the end of the year, he has everything listed in one place and good totals to give me. Everything does not have to have a technological solution.
