  1. unless it has changed recently: NO I know that I could not do it in the past. what I have done is: have one of them get the entire VA, then net the federal so that they each get their overall portion. Since she is the one "concerned" then, have her receive the VA refund. It generally arrives faster anyway. And then she gets a smaller federal refund because she received the entire VA.

  2. If indeed I have a vote, I would vote in favor of listing mortgage insurance along with all other expenses for home office percentage. Just because it is not allowed on a schedule A anymore doesn't mean it isn't an expense. You can't deduct insurance, utilities, repairs, etc. either on a Sch A but they are allowed to apply a percentage for home office deduction.

  3. IMO the 1098T is NEVER going to be correct. Yet again the educational institutions have received a reprieve from being required to accurately provide info. Their lobby is better than ours.

  4. Do check your spam every few days. The free providers do not always play nice with each other, and one may block another for some period of time. Sadly, the only way to avoid dealing with spam, is over time, use your own filtering software, which you control, on a mail server you control. Gmail is likely the best automated system, but will still push messages you want to actually receive into spam.

  5. Thanks everyone, I decided to go temporarily with Avast, I say temporarily because I needed a software to remove various virus from my associates computer and now that they are gone I am just going to go with Windows Defender.

  6. The best is using one's own grey matter to control the impulse to click. After that, I use the current Windows solutions, since they do not guess at the future (lie), and cause false positives. I then, just for "fun" use various free offerings, manually, just to "see" what they report... Whatever you decide to use (if anything) make sure it is checking for and installing updates at least once a day. If you get a security alert, manually check the file using virustotal.com. With common sense, you actually need to protection, since you are really protecting yourself from your own mistakes.

  8. The identifiers, beside the SSN, for individual returns consist of the first letter of the first name and the first 4 letters of the last name, so the last name can be truncated as cbslee says.

  9. One summary I have seen shows for aged or blind above the standard deduction for 2018 is $1300 and $1600 with a note that IRS Rev Proc 2017-58 (only for aged and blind as the tax act didn't change these amounts from 2017 either).

  10. If you have Windows 10, Defender is perfectly fine. Just do an occasional sweep with others (I do them every other week). As was said by cbslee, since I moved my email address to being handled via Google and everything goes through their system - I get next to nothing in spam. My corporate email address was transferred to google last summer and their spam blocking system does a solid job. I use Thunderbird as my email client software for accessing the account.

  11. Actually I did something very similar to that , 5 or 6 years ago. Really nasty divorce, but after I carefully explained it to both of them, they were both OK with it.

  12. Your idea occurred to me after I sent my post. I'll simply increase her federal refund by 1/2 of the expected Virginia refund reducing his federal by that amount. Who wants to bet me he will balk?

  13. Delete the cover page form, save the return, then add the form back.

  14. If you do this // any change you could do a webinar for those who might not be able to make the trip? Maybe even something as simple as a Skype or ooVoo during the LIVE presentation. /s Abby could maybe start a side business (or pro bono) as I am sure he wants/needs more to utilize his free time.

  16. When are the 1098Ts going to be correct? I thought the IRS was requiring the schools to get this corrected. But I think IRS keeps giving them extensions. It would be nice to have correct 108Ts to rely on.

  18. Just start removing letters from the end of the name until the efile is allowed. I have never had a problem with truncating a last name.

  19. This is the key. Always get a report from the Bursar's Office. And then a list from the parents of who paid what, and when. Remember, payments by Grandma don't count towards AOTC. Unless the kid is Grandma's dependent...

  20. Just a thought. Are you sure the numbers are for 2017 only. Ive had 1098-Ts that pull in other years info such as scholarship info for 2017 and the first semester of 2018 which could create a taxable situation. I usually like to get the term printouts from the school to be sure they are only allocating the correct year items to the 1098-T

  23. I learned from the best. Rich came to my office when I switched to ATX to give me a jump start. How nice was that. I still remember how confusing the whole letters thing was.

  26. Rich is correct. Sorry this post is long. This link is to Cornell Law for sec 1.401(k)-1(f) "Special rules for designated Roth contributions" and should have the references you are looking for. Bolding is mine, but be sure to read all of it :

  29. Ours too! It's not so much the words on the letters but the navigating the whole thing when you edit them. It's like a space ship up in there. And y'all know my mother is Dolly Parton and my dad is a Moon Pie, right?

  30. This can be true because the mortgage interest and real estate taxes move back to the Sch A, and you don't have to worry about depreciation when you sell.

  32. I am doing as Lion has stated with this. Creating the 1099 Misc with refused and am educating my client on the need for the W-9 form as well. The IRS may still issue a penalty for the 1099. Better this way than trying to re-classify the expense when there are no supporting documents.

  33. I suppose so. Our local office seems to be one of the bad ones, then.
