  1. You might want to point out to her if the return is late she is responsible to the it out of her own money. Hopefully she saved money to pay you before distribution.

  2. No worries. We've all been there, and I've eaten my share of egg, more lately than ever. Someday soon I'll explain why I've been MIA more, not that that's all bad, and have had some fuzzy thoughts on some answers too.

  4. You can obtain the 147C letter for your EIN by calling the IRS at 800 829-4933. It can be faxed to you.

  5. So I needed to call Bank Of America to get a replacement card because I lost mine. OK, I shredded it accidentally but that is a different story. Anyways, I need to call the customer service department. What is the first question the computer asks? "What is your card number?" I don't know, because I am reporting it lost (shredded - different story), but luckily, after doing nothing on my keypad they shoot me to the next prompt that says "If you are calling to report a lost or stolen card, press 1". Now we are getting somewhere. "We are experiencing extremely high call volume. Your call will be answered in the order received." Time to play some solitaire on my computer. Missed two calls waiting for a live person. Finally get a live person (from TN...she said so when she answered, sorry @RitaB if you think I am making fun of your state). What is the first question the rep asks? "What is your 16 digit card number?" Me "I don't know. I hit the button to tell you that I need a replacement card. Maybe the computer did not tell you that when the call was routed to you." And here is the kicker...I kid you not....this came out of her mouth...obviously reading from a script..."Did you know you can go online to the BofA website and take care of this?" Me..."How do I do that if I don't know my card number?" Crickets.....then ..."oh, sorry about that, lets get you taken care of, what is your social...…" I just wanted to say "Here's your sign". 6. Well the new machine is up and running. As yet I cannot get the Chrome browser to successfully download to replace the default Microsoft browser. It starts downloading and then simply stops uncompleted. Do any of you know of a solution to this? I am using the Mcafee security software furnished and suspect it is somehow blocking it.

  7. I think we're looking at two different windows. I'm on W10. Explorer. Right click on file c or e. Menu pops up. Last item on menu says 'Properties'. Click on Properties. Under General tab.

  8. All good advice above. While the QCD can exceed the RMD, also keep in mind that only amounts that otherwise would have been included in taxable income may be QCD. In other words, the QCD can't include basis or other nontaxable amounts from after-tax rollovers. Also, can't do this from employer plans.

  9. It sounds like Mom held a life estate in the property as the daughter did not receive the property until Mom's death. Based on "Pursuant to ' 2036(a) of the IRC, the transfer of a residence with a retained life estate permits the transferee of the residence to receive a full step up in his or her cost basis in the premises upon the death of the transferor, to its fair market value on the transferor's date of death. This occurs because the residence is includible in the gross taxable estate of the transferor upon his or her demise. This, of course, presumes the existence of an estate tax upon the death of the transferor. A "life estate", pursuant to IRC ' 2036(a), is the possession or enjoyment of, or a right to the income from the property or the right either alone or in conjunction with another to designate the persons who shall posses or enjoy the property or income thereof." I believe the property receives a full step-up in basis upon Mom's death.

  10. Copied from IRS E-News: 1. New IRS Impersonation Email Scam The IRS and its Security Summit partners warned tax professionals this week about a new IRS impersonation scam campaign spreading nationally on email. The new email scam uses dozens of compromised websites and web addresses that pose as IRS.gov, making it a challenge to shut down. By infecting computers with malware, these imposters may gain control of an individual’s computer or secretly download software that tracks every keystroke, eventually giving them passwords to sensitive accounts, such as financial accounts. “The IRS does not send emails about your tax refund or sensitive financial information,” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig. “This latest scheme is yet another reminder that tax scams are a year-round business for thieves. We urge you to be on-guard at all times.” The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email, text messages or social media channels to request personal or financial information. This includes requests for PIN numbers, passwords or similar access information for credit cards, banks or other financial account.

  12. Well happy days are here again. The transition to Windows 10 is moving along pretty well considering my advanced age. It seems I will now be able to confront the new tax season with renewed zest and vigor. Would this were the case in other aspects of my life. This . Instead of this I thought y'all might need a little humor today.

  13. Quite true, the reps I dealt with were very friendly. The results, not so good!

  14. Often these phone encounters are followed by a message: "Please take a survey to tell us of your customer service experience today." Customers are often furious, but these corporate giants use these surveys to chew out the poor reps that were on the phone. These guys(girls) are usually not the problem, and spend their time having to defend idiotic policy decisions made by people far above their heads.

  15. I left BoA after the banks blew up the economy in 2008 (have you seen The Big Short?), and have been with a credit union ever since. Could not be happier with interest rates, customer service and their websites.

  16. I have an encrypted PDF of all my credit cards (front and back for phone numbers), passport, drivers license, insurance forms and so forth - it's saved in my email. If traveling I know I can get a copy of everything. You can order replacement debit or credit cards right off the BofA website. Why would anyone call? That's like mailing a letter.

  17. If the call center was in Chicago, you’ll probably get a response like this “look at your last statement to get your account information” but probably in a meaner way

  18. I won't go into the details, but I had similar experience recently with a B of A credit card in regards to setting up automatic payments. On the face of it their credit card website looks very professional etc, but when you go down to the next level I was going around in circles. Tried to get help from a real person on the phone, they emailed instructions telling me to do the same thing which had already not worked. I am in the process of closing this credit card and will never do business with B of A again. It's a tossup as who is the worst B of A or Wells Fargo !

  20. I agree with Abby, and if the payroll is fairly consistent from pay to pay, the accrual probably doesn't materially change that expense or the overall reporting anyway. If that is the case, I would book accruals and reversals only for final year-end reporting.

  21. I wouldn't worry about this for a nonprofit. I also would not report monthly for a nonprofit. Every nonprofit in my town that I became treasurer for (including my Quaker meeting), I switched from monthly to quarterly, because nonprofits have so much variability from month to month, it was meaningless and confusing to review monthly. It was a waste of the everyone's time to do monthly financials, and left people more confused than informed.

  22. If on the accrual basis, then accrue salary at month end if paid shortly after month end date. It doesn't matter if the salary is fixed or variable, so long as it's determined by month end.

  23. Just remind them it is for the whole calendar year - once they give them the cash they should, technically, be sure to skip any Christmas or birthday gifts since that will put them over the limit if they have already given the max.

  26. From the instructions for Form 1099R regarding loans treated as distributions: Subsequent repayments. If a participant makes any cash repayments on a loan that was reported on Form 1099-R as a deemed distribution, the repayments increase the participant's tax basis in the plan as if the repayments were after-tax contributions. However, such repayments are not treated as after-tax contributions for purposes of section 401(m) or 415(c)(2)(B) If you show them the instructions, do you think they will realize that it does have to be treated as paid with after-tax money?

  27. I've installed an update that had become available while I was away on vacation. Also did some database cleanup. Between that and marking everything read, hopefully the issue goes away!

  28. I, too, got that message (didn't note the error code, though). But, I did get back to the forums without them being black/unread. Also, it was about the time a thread was moved to another forum. I don't think it's recurred. But, I do remember it also in the distant past, at least once. Yours is recurring now, right?
