  1. I have no employees and prepare 300 tax returns. I was 99% wrapped up by 4/15 because I anticipated the extended tax return date and informed clients in my annual letter that such an event would not change their usual 3/31 deadline to provide all of their information. Their annual questionnaire included new lines for confirming and providing their 1st and 2nd Stimulus refunds as well as data for the other new issues. My clients are well-trained and almost all of them complied; the others are looking for a new tax preparer - LOL. Unfortunately, the "superseding tax return" issue then reared it's ugly head so I was forced to postpone my 4/16 vacation. Alas, the best laid plans of mice and men ..........

  2. We do not attempt to e-file RITA. Too many bad experiences. We use the generic Ohio for 95% of our municipal returns. If you need assistance, we are quite familiar with ATX and muni returns. Send me a PM, I will be glad to assist you.

  3. Why not MFJ since your client is POA for spouse?

  4. With the military, you file the Home of Record as resident only. If the military member ALSO had non-military income from another state, the state where he/she actually resides, then you would file as a NON-resident for the other state, the one that is NOT his/her HOR. It doesn't matter if they own a home in the state where they are living/serving. The HOR supersedes as far as the resident return goes. Maybe I am not understanding the situation.

  5. I did an ohio K-1 last year. State returns are a ridiculous burden on the taxpayer and then us. Everyone else has my condolences.

  6. I have not figured out how to make the RITA return and ATX be friends. I have resorted to paper filing since I only have 3 clients affected. I do not enjoy the Ohio State/Local/School District tax returns.

  7. Deja vu - I would be more worried about them having the proper insurance, do you know how drunk people get in weddings, especially today

  8. Use the FECWKS. Report the income, there is no SE tax and do NOT check the box to take it to the 2555.

  9. Thank you everyone for this discussion. Now I know more than I could ever know on my own, and without the doubt that something may be incorrect. You guys are simply the best!

  10. Fifteen returns in a day! You are superhuman! The only times I can do that is when they were all done and checked and finally that last bit of missing info came in. Even then, I don't think I'd make 15. Missing info is the worst. Email a client with three questions, and you get two answered. Heck, tonight I emailed a client with two questions and got an answer to one. Really? Most of my returns are fairly complex--even the "easy" ones turn into hours of work when they leave a note that they sold some land or hunting cabin they've had for years and the stock their grandfather gave them when they were born. Tonight I picked up a normally straightforward return and found that she had her daughter's and boyfriend's in there too. Will it ever end???

  11. "I ’m so glad for your sake that your deadline isn’t as tight as usual this year." I so wish this were true. Trying to muster the strength for 17 more days (16.5 but who's counting). I have to finish 10 returns/day to make it, and the returns I have left are stinky :(. They're actually mostly all stinky; why don't I get clients with 2 W2s and a 1098? Pity Party, right here at my desk. I'm drinking a latte and a soda at the same time!!!

  12. OMG yes, I have 1 Ohio return and it drives me nuts every year. Between SD, RITA, and which ones do or don't allow Direct Debit. Usually I feel spoiled, being in MN. Not this year, since we're STILL waiting on the Legislature to pass a tax conformity bill for last year. Gave up, today I've been emailing all clients I held.

  13. And you do not have State, School, or municipal tax returns. If I only dealt with 1040, I could triple my return count.

  15. It is not a C. You can put on E but land no depreciation so misc. income would work. QBI might come into play if on E. Also check on renting less than 14 days not taxable. Guess I am not much help just some ideas to look up.

  17. Active duty can maintain their state unless they choose to change. Ask: did he intend to change? did they do all of the change residence steps: driver's license, vote, car registration etc. If he did indeed change, then he would be a part-year NJ and CT. CT is not a state that military tend to change to (FL, TX) . But he may have his reasons... If he did not intend to change, then I would file full year NJ. and non-res CT showing taxes withheld in error. In the future NJ does not tax his militaty pay if he is not in the state.

  18. My post should have stated ' will NOT be fixed' by ATX. Thanks Gail for understanding what I really meant to say.

  21. Good to have a simple home based business unless you get one of those "Did you receive your first and second EIP payments?" As a blank expression fills their face you sigh knowing you've got another throwback.

  22. Most people needing installment agreements aren't looking for savings. They're looking for sound financial guidance from their tax preparer whom they trust to guide them in dealing with an unexpected tax liability. They're often trying to dig out of a hole while avoiding borrowing from their credit card or a few other sources at incredibly high rates. For them, the I/A is a life saver, and at a very reasonable effective interest rate when compared to other choices they may have. ("effective interest rate" = the interest plus a FTP penalty combined). Plus, it doesn't affect their credit record or available lines of credit. But yes, they do have to actually comply with the terms they agree to or else they can find themselves in hot water.

  23. We have a few newer preparers and I was supposed to do review, but ended up getting all the complex returns, so it varies from two days per return to one return in 3 hours. I do NOT want to know my actual average. We did the PPP loans in our office so we don't have an end in sight on the return front.

  24. Well, you forced me to get up and look at my software if I had one of these. (not feeling great today) There is no special code to allow the wages to flow directly to SE. The entries from the W-2 input would carry to the appropriate wage line of 1040, AND then the preparer DOES have the ability to enter an amount directly on SE for line 2 as "other SE income". Perhaps ATX has a place like that.

  25. Right, I read that but it was the 'making the software do this' that tripped me up. And even then, if hand preparing, which line does one fudge and answer less than truthfully? Again, happy I am not faced with this. There should be easier accommodations for such situations especially given Pacun's litany of the number of possible employees/not self employed required to file SE in this situation. Good luck with your solution, FDNY!

  26. I have averaged 24 returns per week this season. (Beginning last week of January.) I've worked six days a week, but missed two Saturdays and a Monday. Wow, it puts you so far behind. I have a lot of chatterboxes, and I may or may not be one myself, and a few bookkeeping/payroll clients that I see every week. No support staff, except the Lord. He's good, though. Y'all are correct; the ones in the stack right now are stinky and/or the "Oh, that [W-2] should be there..." Uh, huh, and do you think I didn't look five times before I asked you for it?

  28. My oddest current situation is a client who ignores my questions about virtual currency transactions, even though I've sent multiple emails. Makes me strongly suspect the answer is "yes". So he goes on extension until he replies.

  29. Three or four, assuming I have ALL the information. But there is almost always something missing! Then there is the long process of writing it up and chasing the client for all the answers NOT yet provided. Or the "wait, what about my second job?" when you think you're done and it turns out they never gave you the new W2. One year a client forgot to tell us about a new baby! Picked up the return, brought it home for signatures, called the next day "where's the baby?" when she never gave us any info at all. Between three of us, we do about 700 returns in a season (personal and corporations and entities). Except for *some* of the dependent kids with summer jobs, almost all are a long hard slog.

  30. How many returns are people usually able to get through in a day? I can do maybe 15 on a Saturday or Sunday, but weekdays are much less productive. I think Jim on this board does 1000 per season by himself. Unreal! Curious to know how others pace.

  32. Because the 10K was used as an ordinary rate tax deduction in the year(s) it was a rental. Because the house appreciated rather than depreciated, that 10K needs to be put back in as taxable income at ordinary rates (up to a max 25%).

  33. The IRS cannot issue refunds beyond the three year window. File 2017 somehow now and then wait for the other years. Don't feel bad since they had a few years when the husband was NOT missing to file and they didn't do so.
