  1. Yes, to backups. I have a second hard drive in my computer to back up and a small external hard drive I keep in a small safe as well as BackBlaze for continuous backup. And my trusty tech guy who performs miracles.

  2. On the top of Form 8962 is a check box if filing married separately and no exceptions apply. It also says to see instructions. The instructions say married filing separately makes you ineligible for the PTC (unless exceptions apply) and also say not to enter the numbers except the far right column. When I did that, the full amount of the PTC was caculated as excess and had to be paid back. The exceptions do not apply to my client. Obviously in my case, it is better to file jointly. They have to pay back some of the PTC but not all of it if they filed separately.

  4. ATX has carryovers for Sch D in the worksheets. Same for 8582 losses, foreign tax credit, contributions, PTP losses, etc. There's no one central place to see them all.

  6. My inkjet all-in-one (that's old and not printing right now) was for anything that wasn't a tax return: copies, quick scan to paper or .pdf to give to client, color printing, faxing a piece of paper when I didn't have it as .pdf, etc., and it talked back and forth with my computer. At the time I bought it (2nd printer I owned), I had a color laser printer (1st printer I bought decades ago). The color laser didn't die; a non-HP cyan toner exploded inside it. At that time, it was so old that I wasn't going to spend time trying to clean it or pay money to clean it, if it was even possible (it was a LOT of toner). By that time I also had a fast black-only printer for tax returns. Margaret makes me think that my next all-in-one should be a laser, so it truly will do everything but tax returns, but could be a backup for tax returns. Two printers are enough, if both of them are laser. Thank you, Margaret, for telling me about your backup laser printer!

  7. Not having a full and complete backup of all of your files is foolish. In addition to backing up the entire Wolters Kluwer folder, you should at least backup your documents and many other things in your Users folder, plus anywhere else you keep important files. It's important that you end the ATX servers, all of them that are running, before backup up the Wolters Kluwer folder. Occasionally, I turn off all the ATX servers and copy the entire Wolters Kluwer folder to My Documents and then it gets backed up with all my other documents. I name the folder Wolters Kluwer yy-mm-dd and keep the latest 3.

  8. Yes, I always use that Tax Summary and love the carryover information. It has for AMT, Roth contributions, Foreign tax credit, and probably more than I recall at the moment. I print it out on pdf or paper along with the comparison for my clients.

  9. Also, click on the amount of the refund or owed amount in the upper right corner of the screen. It will bring up a form for tax information for the client and page 2 has all carry over amounts.

  10. One of my jump drives; full of info crashed. Apparently my assistant pulled it up as she pulled it out and broke the end off. Since she has been off since Thursday, I went on her computer and downloaded all of her returns to a newer and tougher flash drive. Unfortunately, when moving her clients to my computer, I lost all of my clients in the Netherworld somewhere. IT came in yesterday; couldn't find them so we both have new jump drives; which unfortunately are identical (because that's what I had). Putting a dab of nail polish on mine for identity. Never use the stuff on my nails anyway. What a time for these things to happen and in the midst of a Wisconsin record-breaking ice storm., and another on the way. So far I have not lost power at this location but am working long hours just in case. By the way, all of my info was still correct and where it was supposed to be on my computer and ATX. A firm reminder to run a backup of the harddrive.

  11. You mean the IP PIN, and yes, the most current one issued is the one to use for the current year being filed and the 2 prior years.

  14. I dropped my fax line several years ago due a lack of use and I switched my land line to Google Voice back in November, thanks to Abby. I have used both HP and Canon printers over the years although I think my next printer will be a Brother based on everyone's posts.

  18. I had a client who had not filed for 2022, 2023 and 2024, I filed 2022 electronically. It was rejected because it was missing IRS TIN. I asked the client to look for the TIN received in Jan 2023, and at the same time I requested the other TIN received in Jan 2024 and Jan 2025. The client only provided the latest one. i asked them to check the old mail (I was wrong). Another client also missed her TIN and she went on line and sent me a picture. In the picture I saw her number and below I could read something like "this pin can be used for current tax year and the two previous ones". I went back to my previous client and ask him to stop the search and i tried the latest PIN and it worked. I know all of you guys know this but, I want to share anyways.

  19. Yes, I think of the IP PIN as belonging to the calendar year. Use it for anything you e-file (current and 2 prior tax years) during this calendar year. You enter the IP PIN on a tax return for whatever tax year, but it belongs to the calendar year in which you're actually e-filing. So, it will NOT be from a prior tax year, because you're e-filing a prior tax year return in this calendar year. We spend our work days in tax year 2024, or earlier: what were the tax laws that year, how much was that credit, etc. We don't spend a lot of our work days in 2025: ES, planning... So, an IP PIN has very untax-like rules to belong to 2025 e-filing but for 2024, 2023, and 2022 returns.

  20. Copied from The Federal News Network: "The IRS is preparing for its first wave of nonvoluntary layoffs, as part of a government wide reduction in force (RIF). The IRS has begun implementing a Reduction in Force (RIF) that will result in staffing cuts across multiple offices and job categories,” the agency told employees in an email Friday afternoon. “None of the reductions were made today based on individual performance. Employees laid off through a RIF notice will have 30-60 days before separating from the agency. This action is being taken to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the IRS in accordance with agency priorities and the Workforce Optimization Initiative outlined in a recent Executive Order,” the IRS wrote. With limited exceptions, all actions with an effective date after April 4, 2025, will be canceled." It appears that my previous "Return to Work" post was a temporary response to Court Orders

  23. Christian, I feel your pain. Mine died last fall and that was the impetus to get a new one (my tech guy builds mine) with Win 11 Pro. It was such a pain restoring, moving data, reinstalling programs, fortunately he did 90+% of the work. I'm glad it wasn't now. Hopefully you are back in business now!

  24. My Brother is HL-L2370DW. I love all the same things about it as Margaret. The only downside is that the bypass door is too shallow to hold a page of labels securely enough to feed straight; but I can put a sheet of labels in the paper drawer for better results. The bypass is fine for feeding an envelope, though. Or, card stock.

  25. No, if I don't hold back, people get too upset with me. Plus there would be too much cussing for these forums. I think Brother & HP have switched places. Decades ago I heard lots of ridicule of Brother printers. Now they get pretty high praise while HP is scorned.

  26. Margaret CPA in Ohio, yes I did keep the same number for my fax line. I do miss being able to use a real phone on that number sometimes, but I don't miss coming in to find printed out truck ads, etc. I have really like this service. I use RingCentral if you are interested.

  27. I've had a lot of old HP workhorses since I went into biz. I had one after another Brother fax machines that broke down fast when I started, so switched to all HP for anything that prints. My current IT guy told me that he still recommends the high-end HP models, but for small offices like mine he prefers Brother in my price range. I now have a Brother, small/fast/B&W, for printing tax returns. Probably going with a Brother all-in-one after tax season to replace my old HP all-in-one that served me well for years/decades but that's giving me fits re not using HP cartridges when HP no longer makes cartridges for this very old printer.

  28. I can't even imagine a world where my clients could download their tax returns without me printing it. Even people who I think it should be a no-brainer get hung up on it and almost always it's because their corporate networks won't allow them to download. Um, use your personal computer at home? A brokerage firm sent me their 1099s via a portal and the broker said more than 50% of their clients couldn't figure it out. All you had to do was put in your email address and last name. Have a guy who I sent everything through the portal 2x and he asked for it a third time to be sent via email. Finally his business partner texted me and confided he knew the guy was scared of the portal. I knew he hadn't downloaded the items but at least try?

  29. This old fashioned office still has a working fax machine and two land lines in addition to my cell. Believe me, that land line rings all day long unless I unplug it because of office in my home. On top of that, an entire handful of paper bill payments are in limbo somewhere and we are fighting the late fees on all of these bills. Companies are being very cooperative and checks have not cleared the bank,; but the loss of time is something that I don't need right now. End of rant.

  30. I have used HP for years, but if and when I have to replace my printer it won't be with HP for the reasons given above. In fact, the last HP fax machine that we had in the office was the reason I switched to an electronic fax service.

  32. Back in the 80s, 90s, and maybe early 2000s, HPs were supposedly the best. Today they're worthless garbage. I've bought three. The first two were good but I don't think they lived up to their reputation. The third I bought in 2011. This was before HP required HP toner cartridges, tried to trick users into signing up for ink subscriptions, and remotely turned off printers, but it was still worthless trash. Takes forever to warm up when turned on, prints at half it's stated speed, noisily re-calibrates numerous times per day even if nothing has been printed, and nosily runs a cleaning routine numerous times per day even if nothing has been printed. Now that HP requires their own ink cartridges and is turning off peoples' printers, I'm surprised anyone still buys their junk.

  33. My main computer crashed 3/6. I usually have two computers. I've never had my main computer die, it's always been the older one. It took the repair shop a week to figure it out and get it running. Then it took me 4 days to load programs and data. I've had worse weeks in my life, but that one is near the top. Lost about 30 returns I was in the midst of and about a dozen completed returns from the previous two years that I hadn't backed up properly. I have PDFs and paper copies of the past years' returns, so I might rebuild those later in the year. Since I had the older computer, I still had internet access, but couldn't do any real work. Clients seem to be understanding. I can tell some were a bit anxious, while some who dropped their info off right before the crash aren't fazed at all that it took me five weeks to complete their returns after I told them 1 to 2 weeks. Because I was totally unaware of the shit storm I was in the midst of, one client emailed me last Saturday, "Hope you are having a super Saturday. Gentle check in on completion of my tax return. A kind reminder that tax returns are coming due. Please provide status. Much appreciated."

  34. Oh MB you are so right! I had a conference call 3/6 with an IRS agent for Trust and payroll - Message said to call supervisor! she was gone. He did call back and said they would be assigned someone new in 30 days. She was on probation and let go. Now, he has someone who in order to do an uncolloectable - she wants 1 year of everything! I said it is usually 3 months and she wanted to see it all Plus she shows huge balance due and no ERC's - 3 of which were applied last year and wiped out the prior uncollectible! She said I will give you 2 weeks - I said it is tax season and quarterlies - She gave us 1 month and said call back then and ask for 30 more days. We then faxed the 1120S from 2022 to her - with the accepted filing page! , she said they did not have! Plus the 2023 941! and the ERC's.. What the heck! She can start with that Best Taxing for 10 days! WI
