  1. definitely ship - even this time of year - reply to [email protected] - if you would please 3 kinds - mild, Italian style flavor, absolutely Ewemazing! The one that won - Lacey Lamb - smooth mellow more of a Continental type - great for snacking and then aged Ewemazing - if you like an aged cheese - this has a some zest to it, a good nice aged cheese. Sheep's cheeses are richer and creamier because the milk is and our flavor profile is can I say superb as my husband works for a starter/culture company Chr Hansen out of Milwaukee by way of Denmark so this is his business - developing flavor. We are both third generation dairy and our youngest just passed his cheesemakers test for his license Monday - not to work for us though - yet? 715-623-2520 - call with your order and credit card! We have staff ready and waiting

  3. All of our entity returns and personal property returns are extended the first week of March. We extend all unfinished returns the first week of April, unless we are 100% certain they will file on time and/or are getting a refund. With the way we customize our 4868, extensions go fairly quickly. I could repost if any of you missed it last year.

  4. I don't give a date anymore. I did that once, and got hit with a mother-load on that very day. Ever since then, I just surprise them. Anyone not in by April 1 will get an extension if they have more than a simple return. I'm already pretty deep in the hole, but I'll get them done. Started closing my office on Saturdays (always closed on Sunday) and that helps me immensely.

  5. I filed my first extension on Jan 29 (my own). I'll begin filing client extensions on everything that comes in on March 19 or after, no exceptions except for very simple returns that can be completed on the first pass. Many extended returns will still be completed by Apr 16, but at least I don't have to circle back or even give it any thought. I like to makes Apr 16 just another day at the office.

  6. 3/20. NO EXCEPTIONS. Even those people that believe filing an extension guarantees an audit....

  7. JKLCPA ! Thank you for the nomination, CATHERINE for the second. My head is still spinning over these issues. I like your term, CATHERINE, legis-vermin. Oddly enough, the legislative attorney contacted the LA EA Society for our input on two bills being introduced next week to regulate tax preparers in Louisiana.

  8. First nomination of the week is for @Lynn EA USTCP in Louisiana for this post that made my head swim and made me thankful that I don't deal with anything remotely this convoluted and confusing. Lynn may not post as often as some others of us, but when she does chime in her answers are always spot on!

  10. Here's an older article from The Tax Advisor that covers the part of your original question about whether the legal fees are deductible or not. The article discusses the concept of "origin of the claim" test to determine whether legal fees are an above- or below-the-line item of expense, when they might be deductible, or if they must be added to basis. Under the heading "Capitalize or Expense", it says that If the legal fees have their origin in the ownership or protection of the property they should be capitalized. The first example that follows is similar to your scenario where a person had to defend title to his rental property, and this article says that legal expense should be added to basis, and it cites code sec 263. ETA - deduction is specifically disallowed under sec 1.212-1(k).

  11. My biggest headache is the businesses who need to file local return extension. The locals want their own extension with a payment.

  13. Over the weekend I filed three extensions for returns due 15 March, because they don't have everything. I probably have all that I can handle right now, but I have been saying 15 March for personal returns. The weekly Nor'easters have had clients rescheduling or delaying drop offs! Some years I say 1 March, because so many are missing something when they drop off. I already had one client go elsewhere, because she wanted to bring me everything at the end of March and get it done on the spot to file before her ex -- who probably filed way back in January, so why should I go out of my way?! (Two new clients replaced her.) And, I have some prior year returns, including 2014s which need to get done. So, no promises after 15 March.

  14. Jack: You could tell that person who worries about an audit that you know a tax preparer who hasn't filed before Oct in over 30 years and has never been audited.

  15. We drop all tax work and start filing extensions around April 7th. Our deadline for paperwork is March 15th but almost no one gives us everything on the first pass so it's basically a way to stop people from complaining. Once extensions are all filed, we turn back to returns and always file bundles of the extended returns by the deadline.

  18. Years ago, I decided to refer to ALL of them (local, state, federal) as legis-vermin. There's something very satisfying about that term. And everyone who hears it laughs (ruefully) and gets it immediately. Said it once to a nice female legis-vermin and I thought she was going to fall out of her seat, she was laughing so hard. Said I didn't know the half of it, and couldn't wait to tell her husband.

  21. It was the Moore case (I think) http://caselaw.findlaw.com/md-court-of-appeals/1132400.html But, yeah, lawyers write vague agreements and then get paid to fight about what was meant for years afterward. Tell your divorcing clients to SPELL. IT. OUT. Regardless of what the law says. I asked my mediation attorney why my divorce agreement didn't specifically say that support ended upon remarriage, and she told me that she felt it wasn't necessary because 'that was the law.' I told her she should start doing it.

  22. I just got one this year where the husband gets the 1099R for the full amount, even though the ex gets half. Thankfully no taxes were withheld. We issued 1099R from husband to ex. Also, there poorly crafted mediation agreement says 500/mo until he dies but says nothing about qualifying as alimony or not qualifying. Too many lawyers suck at their job. There was a MD case that went all the way to the state supreme court which, on a split decision, decided that lifetime payments ceased at remarriage because MD law clearly says they do. The ex got remarried one month after the divorce agreement. Alimony was rally high. I remember the surname in the case seemed appropriate.

  23. I will be filing 32 business extensions this week. Our cutoff for personal returns is March 23rd. Anything coming after that date is not necessarily guaranteed to be extended, but we tell then there is a better chance than not. And the closer we get to the deadline, the more likely the extension will be done. And I also tell them, "and oh, by the way, at 4:30 on April 13th, I will be locking the door on the office (from the outside) and will not unlock it again until the morning of the 19th." (It may be the 18th but the client will not know that.) We will prepare personal extensions on April 9th and 10th (and maybe 11th).

  25. I used 3/9 in my engagement letter. Even if I have a chance to get them done, it lights a fire under some of the stragglers. I have a lot still to prepare and way too many prior years.

  29. Take solace in the fact that no auditor will understand it either. When I'm faced with at situation like this, if there are no red errors, I make some notes, call it day and only have to see it again if the government asks about it.

  30. The state legislature is to blame for these frickin' issues, which complicates what used to be a reasonably easy return to complete, 4 pages. This return is now 17 pages long!! My eyes cross trying to complete one without problems; tackling these with the legislature mandated limitations is so aggravating.

  34. I hired a part time reparer a couple of weeks ago. I had to leave earlier than her yesterday so I explained that the front door lock was just a button in the knob and she would be able to lock it and still leave and have it locked behind her. She thought I meant the door to my office not the main door to the whole office. She locked my door with the key safely tucked away in my desk. I have spent half the day trying to take the door off it's hinges so I could get back into my office.
