  1. Never do returns in pen!

  2. I've never understood why they put those "Deer Crossing" signs along the road where they do. Too many deer get hit there. They should move the signs to a safer place.

  3. I've decided to stop saying "How stupid can you be? " Seems like some of my clients are taking that as a challenge.

  4. I like 6:21 forward as well J: "Did you have roaming eyes or eyes just for her?" A: I-I-I have eyes just for her..." (Long pause and stare-down by judge) A" I-I-I mean I'm a guy - you're gonna look aroun - uh-uh-uh I mean, listen your honor..." Suggestion: When you suddenly realize you're standing in a hole you just dug, the VERY first thing you should do is throw away the shovel.

  9. Maybe the older eyes, in this case, were the issue??? Don't blame the "younger deer."

  10. I am taking this to mean the parents are deciding not to claim the kid and asking you to amend their return to remove him as a dependent. If so, I would explain to them that you can't just decide, his dependency belongs on one return or the other and explain the law. I would file the kid's extension request if he needs one, free gratis, because I'm all about customer service, even though I'm also all about doing things the right way, which is sometimes annoying to clients and bad for business, but it's hard to argue with me.

  11. Oh man I crashed last night and still was in the office until 10. Two nights in a row, I've had to brake hard for deer on the last mile of my commute home. I can usually see their eyes reflecting my headlights while I'm still a good distance away, but that did not happen on either night. They were younger deer and maybe their eyes aren't as reflective? TWO WEEKS!!

  12. In our area, the deer cross wherever they want to and just ignore the signs. I don't think they understand the pictogram.

  13. Unless I am misunderstanding the facts as stated, the son simply needs to file his own return and not claim himself. No amended return is necessary.

  14. If he is a full time student, sec 152(f)(5) allows for special treatment of scholarships of a qualifying child that is "a child of the taxpayer" that allows the scholarship to be excluded from the support test. This article from the Journal of Accountancy describes the section pretty well, starting in paragraph 3 where it says: With that in mind and if he is a full time student, if he didn't provide more than 1/2 his own support, and if all the other tests are met, he will still be a qualifying child of his parents and they should claim him as their dependent.

  16. Right there is why I do not like to drive after dark in these parts. I leave the office in time to be home before it gets dark and then work in my office at home until I am through for the day!

  18. The interface has a real XP feel to it, and it could be more user friendly, but it works and it's reasonably priced. No client has had any problems navigating yet. It's like a temporary portal that we email things to and clients can reply and email attachments back to us. Nothing left in the cloud for eternity. No password protected PDFs. I'll use it to email organizers next year. It will save us a lot of time. I was only supposed to have a 30 day trial but I'm well beyond that now. Just emailed them and told them I want to buy. "Take my money, please!" https://www.zixcorp.com/products/zixmail

  19. Have you tried entering None, on the NE K-1 Input for the Nebraska ID Number? I know that most of the time this does not work, but it might be worth a shot

  20. I hadn't even noticed because I happened to need 3. Call or email and ask if they'd do one license. There are a lot of resellers of zixmail that might offer single licenses. here's one: http://www.securemailencryption.com/ZixMail.asp

  21. This sounds really good - except for the minimum 3 user license. I'm only one person. Too bad they don't offer a single user license.

  23. Exemption may be the correct word. Y'all know what I'm getting at. Did kid provide over half his own support or not?

  24. The IRS IS matching the 1099K. I have seen the notice and written the response. Weird situation, federal sales were for a Subsidiary. Reported under EIN #1, but belonged to EIN #2. IRS asserted Tax on C-Corp for not reporting all its sales. Rich

  25. We have had a number of audits when the 1099-K was lower than the reported sales, so I believe the IRS computers are matching. Enter the cash back as a negative number, and list the sales tax on the taxes paid line.

  26. I've never had 1099Ks that add up to more than sales per the businesses books, due to sales that aren't on a 1099K, but if that ever happened, I would report the 1099K total and back out the difference somewhere. You should be our test case to see if the IRS is even matching 1099Ks. My guess is that they are not.

  27. I am in coast mode and will simply coast across the finish line. I don't care what the sob story - I will not be forced into making the clients lack of planning an emergency for me. Had one in today - "Oh, we just got back from Florida Saturday (have been there since October). If we bring our stuff in tomorrow can you get it done?" My response was "maybe .....and maybe not". My thought was, "I guess the US Postal service and the world wide web does not work in Florida." Anyway, I have horsed around and got four done today. I did some of my own company accounting on Saturday. Through March 31st, our billings are up 13.25% over last year. Right there is a great explanation of why I am now in coast mode. I am flat out tired out.

  28. Only 2 done today. I feel like I'm slacking off. Are we all racing to the finish line (or crawling and dragging ourselves across it?)

  31. Yeah, I haven't seen where a board member is paid and it sounds like you are at that level. My sister in law worked as a youth minister - it was a 24x7 type job with kids calling and stopping by her house at all hours. People then acted like she should do it for free out of the goodness of her heart. Since she quit (her kids got old enough to no longer be involved) they've had a series of ministers quit and every year they ask her to come back as they find another replacement. It's probably like being a teacher - nobody gives them the respect they deserve for what they have to put up with.

  32. The large church donation produced a carryover to the next year. The anonymity sought was from both leadership and the congregation. She initially produced an acknowledgement letter, two years later, undated, not contemporaneous. And I advised her it was unacceptable. Thanks for sharing

  34. Catherine, she finally passed all of her tests today so we are very blessed. It made a great Easter even better. She went home this afternoon. I probably won't be able to see her again until after 4/17, because even though they are only an hour away, that's more time than I can spare right now. We can video chat though!

  35. Yeah, did upgrade printer a couple years back. Takes me time to stuff all their stuff and return in a folder and upload signature forms/return to my portal and package it for mailing or call them for a pick-up time (well, I try via email as it takes less time than talking to them on the phone). Semi-retired hubby goes to PO and makes deliveries for me. He knows nothing about taxes, but I put flags when signatures are needed. But, as of this morning, I cannot connect to internet, update my software, transmit returns, receive/send emails, etc., from my desktop computer. Hard drive is failing. And, I'm waiting on the techie. Doing some work on my much slower laptop (and I miss my three monitors). And, continuing to prepare returns my desktop and backing up often as Windows keeps shutting down. I was hoping to nurse it through a couple more weeks, but not to be. So I got one out the door Saturday, took Easter off, and now am just adding to the stack of almost finished returns. (Wish I hadn't taken Easter off, as computer was still behaving before church.) In the meantime, I'm starting to get the calls about people leaving for spring break by Friday or Saturday and will their returns be ready. No. So, they call back to ask how much they'll owe. Um, if I knew.... I think I'll just say $7,000 federal and $2,000 state and hang up! I'm stopping taking calls, and will return via email each night. It'll save me enough time over the weeks to prepare another couple of returns. My prior techie quit without letting me know (a feud with my son or something I was unaware of) so I have a new guy who's the IC Dell sent to install the new hard drive, and he seems to be one that can clone my old hard drive before it dies to the new drive. Hope he can get me back online, too.
