  6. And I plan to drive from Virginia to Gatlinburg TN tomorrow, and then on to Rita's on Saturday! Back to to Gatlinburg Saturday night, and back to Virginia Monday. Don't know what I was thinking - I am still so far behind! But this will be fun! (Except for all the riding around, and even that won't be too bad - might make up for some of the time I didn't see my husband during tax season to be trapped in a car with him now!)

  8. We pass on the bank charge. If we can't get payment in a certain time frame, we pass it to our States Attorney who has a very good record with such things.

  11. In the past, the IRS would give $1000 child tax credit and the other perks that come with an ITIN. So, I know of places where they asked their clients to request passports from children living in Central America and put them as a dependent and request an ITIN. These tax preparers made extra money and they were busy all year long. So when I hear the famous phrase "they pay taxes" I laugh because I know that a bunch people only get money from the IRS. They never pay anything... BUT that's another subject. Recently the IRS changed the ITIN rules and now when you apply for an ITIN, you need more than a passport if you don't have a visa on it. You need medical records for children under 5 and for children above 4, you need to send school record and any other records that prove that the child is in the USA when you send form W-7 to the IRS, except for dependent living in Mexico or Canada or dependents of militaries. So if you apply for an ITIN, please send passport and proof that the child is here. For taxpayers, the W-2 is a good proof but for dependents, you better send something else.

  12. No one has commented? I thought I was doing it wrong. Not every year you get an exclusion from a house that was rented. Not only you have to research it but also you have to figure out how to enter the info on ATX. I saw the video on another post, maybe each one of us should share something we researched and post from A to Z so when tax season comes, it is easier for other to follow.

  13. I am jealous that people are meeting in the "Middle" of TN. Is there anyone in MD or VA that can accommodate a group gathering? You only need to have a few horses, a soccer field, a river and some livestock. If Kendall Jackson and Margarita with Jose Cuervo are invited, I can bring los limones. Joking aside, I believe gatherings are a good idea and I am wondering if it is possible to have one closer to the DMV area.

  19. This is the way this worked out. If I added 100K in a W-2, then AMT kicks in but remember you will be using the 2018 ATX software package. When I clicked on form 8949, under options, I selected type of transaction 2, but please correct me if I am wrong. Then I clicked on “Sale Principal Residence” on the bottom choices. I entered “House” on the description of property. I entered 05/01/2000 as the purchased date and 08/31/2018 as the selling date. The software automatically calculates the total number of days you owned the property. Then you have to enter only the non-qualified days which are 1,399 days. Why will you pull out the calculator and add every month (46 months) when you could simply state that the non qualified days are the “date purchased” and the “date sold” AND then the computer will give you the exact number of days. Let me explain it a bit, not for you for the others (I know you are smart). Enter 01/01/2009 and 10/31/2012 and put the computer to work to give a total of days of 1,399, which are the non-qualified days. Once you took note of the non-qualified days, please enter the correct dates. The rest if just answering yes or no and entering $100K on the accumulated depreciation. A video is worth it 100 pictures but I don’t have a video…. So I have a picture… so I am attaching a pdf. Please don’t argue that a pdf is not a picture. CPAYARDLEYandATX.pdf

  21. I charge double what the bank charges. Any client gets one strike. Yes, occasionally we get someone who does not make good, and we eat the fee. Way cheaper than chasing them in the long run. I had one deadbeat call me years later, looking for papers relating to her daughter's adoption (she knew we scanned everything). She paid up - with profuse apologies - I went digging and found her docs, she was thrilled.

  22. I charge what the bank charges. I call and request the additional amount, if client doesn't pay, they're dead to me.

  23. My invoice states a $25 fee will be assessed for any item returned by the bank. Hmmm, maybe time to increase that !!!

  24. $30. The bank charges us $15 but we have the hassle of letting the client know and processing a 2nd payment. It rarely happens though.
