Merry Christmas to all of you! I got my new computer today and it's all set up and running great! I love my IT guy! ATX 2014 won't open any of my returns unless I give them money, but I will work on getting that fixed later. He made my desktop look almost like my Windows 7, except for not so cluttered.3 points

At the last minute before the House passed the Omnibus Spending Bill, several sparkling ornaments appeared over the Potomac: Special Interest Tax Extenders retroactively reappeared Remaining ACA related taxes repealed Retirement Plans and IRAs set free Happy New Year to Ethanol Producers, NASCAR, Thoroughbred Racing, Cadillac Heath Plans, Medical Equipment Makers, Retirees with IRAs and a lump of coal for Renewable Energy Credits & etc. All I want for Christmas is . . . . . . . . . . . .2 points

One of the main reason Windows 10 Pro is better than Home is the ability of a computer to belong to a domain.2 points

Most likely your computer was So, you think that a tech guy will be able to remove the password from ATX 2018 without you investing over $50K? If they "steal" my phone, they have to also steal my thumb or contract an Israeli company to hack my phone as the FBI did when they had an iPhone without password. Going back to to the original poster. Since you are talking about 2006 taxes, the hard drive, most likely, was not encrypted, you can get the ATX 2006 software from the vendor or your download folder from within that old computer. I would pulled out the hard drive from that XP machine and attached it to a Win7 machine, copy the database folder, install ATX 2006 on the Windows 7 machine and you can print that return. If needed, you might want to run Win7 in XP compatibility mode to install/run 2006 ATX2 points

A lot of money to be made by amending 2018 returns. Remember that on amended returns, you can charge 50% of the refund or more.1 point

IR-2019-209, December 17, 2019 WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service has launched a new online assistant designed to help employers, especially small businesses, easily determine the right amount of federal income tax to withhold from their workers' pay. Known as the Income Tax Withholding Assistant for Employers, this new spreadsheet-based tool is designed to help employers easily transition to the redesigned withholding system (no longer based on withholding allowances), which goes into effect on Jan. 1. It does this by helping them easily implement new income-tax withholding requests from employees who fill out the completely redesigned 2020 Form W-4, Employee's Withholding Certificate. The SECURE ACT is almost certainly going to be passed this week as it is tied to the spending bill to keep the government open.1 point

I'm just the opposite. We live in back here and I've got a .25 auto, .32 auto, 2 .38s & 1 .357 mag. revolvers, + a 20 ga. shotgun scattered around, so if they they back a truck through the front door (like in the movies) and snatch all the computers off the desks, we'll hear them and stop it. Although my computers and ATX are encrypted - the electronic side worries me. A lady on this board a few years ago complained that somebody (don't remember if she used ATX or who) had swiped many of her previous year rollovers, filed first (before clients did), and she was trying to get help. She called EF center; they brushed her off saying "they didn't handle that kind of problem". Then she tried IRS CID and they too gave her the run-around. As you know, local police are useless re computer info theft. Anyhow, to sum up, nobody could/would help and she was on her own. Seems like she limited the damage somewhat through the software company. But anyway, how is it possible to block this?1 point

We spent about 10 hours setting up our new windows 10 server this weekend. Copying data to/from external SSDs took longer than expected. We replaced our Win7 server with a Win10 server and here's what we learned. Stop the ATX server services on the old computer before copying data. Copy EVERYTHING in both: C:\ProgramData\CCH Small Firm Services C:\ProgramData\Wolters Kluwer Copy the data to the new computer BEFORE you install ATX. ATX will find the data and your settings and view it as a reinstall so it goes smoothly. We had no problems with 2016-2018, but we had to run the ATX database repair batch files (.bat) to repair 2014 & 2015. 2013 didn't work at first, then mysteriously started working. We didn't go back any further. You can find the batch files here: (There's a separate one for each year) https://support.cch.com/kb/solution.aspx/000041746 YOU MUST RUN THESE BATCH FILES BY RIGHT-CLICKING AND CHOOSING 'Run as Administrator'. We ran them not as administrator first and it did not work. Then I went back and read the web page and read the instructions again, more thoroughly. Good luck!1 point

Yes, but we were finding it harder and harder to assemble win 8 computers so we ended up with 2 win 10 computers including the server. If we need ATX support, we can get it on one of the win 10 computers. Also, this will give us some experience with 10. But we did move 4 or 5 computers from 7 to 8.1 point

Thus, showing again, passwords are often a complete waste of time (such as meeting the security practices item in another topic). Any password which has a workaround or reset capability should not be bothered with (if it can be avoided). Even two factor items, such as getting a code via text message is untrustworthy, since it is still fairly easy for someone to "steal" your cell phone number away from you (unless, ironically, you setup a security process such as two step with your cell provider!).1 point

Read the plan document. It must specify the definition of "compensation" for each of the specific purposes of employee contribution, the match, and for nondiscrimination testing.1 point

Can they call the previous plan administrator and ask? I think you were telling us they switched. Just say something along the lines of we want to make sure we follow the same policy. Can you look at past payroll and see how it was handled previously with contributions? I don't have documentation but my understanding was that tips which flow through the paycheck are included, anything else isn't. If a tip is received in cash, it can't be included in the equation. Credit card tips are included and cash tips that are pooled and paid via paychecks.1 point

You go into the BIOS and check/change the boot order so it boots from a CD first. Then google how to create a boot CD. I know my IT guy can remove the passwords from computers, because he's done that to me at least once when I didn't give him the password for a computer he was working on.1 point
-
Ha, ha. That's exactly what I want to tell them - check with their plan administrator. But I figure I'll take the high road and explain that this is an example of why they should not be the administrator.1 point

Bart, this person thinks you person may have a good password idea there (just being extra careful here).1 point
