  1. The overall heat transfer coefficient is directly related to the surface convective heat transfer of a hug. It's all simple thermodynamics. So the short answer is, yes, if you hug long enough you will lose weight. We may be on to something, group hug anyone?

  4. Didn't somebody write a song with that title? Well anyway, today I received the NCR deposit slips that the bank ordered for me. Only thing, they are not NCR. They're just blank singles. I'll live, but still... Last month I ordered blank singles for the personal account and got NCR which I had not ordered. But, I liked them so well I decided to order the company deposit slips in NCR too and, of course, I got the opposite. Now, it's back to carbon paper (for youths who don't know what that is; never mind -- it would take too long to explain). Sort of reminds me of a Seinfeld episode (also not for youths because, as a spring chicken client recently told me"...that happened way back in the nineties"). But anyhoo you may remember the one in which George, frustrated when he followed his own judgment and everything went haywire; cleverly decided to simply figure out what he thought best, then simply do the opposite, and things would work out every time. Next time I'm ordering blank singles.

  6. I am glad we all had some fun with this. Eases some of the stress for the day. I'll be sure next time to keep all my secrets hidden BTW, for the curious, the advice was spot on and just as I expected.

  8. I got a very bad sore throat one time from NCR paper. I was preparing for an audit and was licking my thumb while flipping through stacks & stacks of invoice copies printed on NCR paper. I learned never to do that again.

  9. Do they really still make NCR paper. That stuff will get you high... or so I've heard.

  10. The site below (National Conference of State Legislatures) has all 50 states that you can scroll through or use the search box to find the one state you are interested in. The fee must be based on value so that it would be classified as personal property tax. Basing the fee on anything else such as weight or a flat fee means it isn't deductible. http://www.ncsl.org/research/transportation/registration-and-title-fees-by-state.aspx

  11. Rita, do you know if you hugs also melt away fat?

  12. Sorry but I disagree. While I have used that argument (not in the trade or business) successfully in one audit, providing labor to a business for cash from that business is SE all the way in my book. As soon as the business sends the 1099 Misc, you got a trade or profession that a business was willing to pay you to do. I know I am in the minority here. Tom Newark, CA

  19. FYI, From the Rolling Stones, you can't always get what you want lyrics - Google Search.url As for the Seinfeld episode with George doing the opposite to get what he wants, isn't that the same as a contrarian investing strategy, only works half the time, but then again every other strategy only works half the time. Now I've got to look up NCR.

  20. Is there anyone, anywhere left out there who is not on the cutting edge of technological change? Yeah, yeah, I know - I've still got carbon paper (never mind NCR) and all the cool crew either fly jets or teleport themselves to work. Well anyway, if you are on that edge, then answer me this one: Let XCO3 be a normal quartic surface with divisor class group Cl(X)≅Z[H] generated by the hyperplane section. What can we say about the singularities of X ?

  22. in NY you can elect to pay an amount based on your income, range is like $10-$250. Using this makes you audit proof even if you have thousands of dollars of out of state purchases. Its called sales and use tax so if you buy something out of state but use it in NY then you pay the tax. My staff knows I consider it malpractice not to elect this unless the client is 90 years old and doesn't have a computer.

  23. OK, how did you disable the active links and how did you determine one might be questionable ?
    1 point
  24. I removed all of the links and made a notation in orange of the one that appeared to be malicious. The others did link to a site called eFax but have no idea if the site itself is infected or legit. In future, I'd suggest that you disable the active links that you think may be harmful when posting about them here. I don't think anyone would intentionally click on one, but to be totally safe I went through and modified your post and used underlining and a colored font so that we see where the original links appeared but are now nonfunctional.

  25. So, I was selfish and did my own return on Friday. First time in 20 years I'm filing on time. Just checked my bank account to see if the state refund was there yet and it was but the federal refund is scheduled for this Friday! You can't beat 7 days on a federal refund.

  26. You can beat it by not overwithholding in the first place.

  27. I agree with Catherine 100%. If I do carpentry and electrical work for my brother-in-law to build part of his barn into an office - that is NOT my area of expertise and I do not hold myself out as a member of either of those professions. I'd report the amount he paid me - I would NOT report it as SE. There is entirely too little information to indicate this is anywhere close to being a W2 employee situation.

  28. Correct. The only use for the lodging per diem is employers reimbursing employees. No one else can claim it as an expense. They must use actual.

  29. Yes, I thought of that line 22 fix, but it's not really truthful, even if basis exceeds distribution, since line 19 SHOULD be zero. But I'll be honest, I am tempted. There is no chance of a code correction, as that's what Code T is for - account custodians with new accounts. Too bad it's an option, and they don't have to find out when the taxpayer contributed. Oh well, that's why we are heroes.

  30. North Carolina has the same requirement. I am not willing to certify for my clients that they don't owe consumer use tax, so I ask them and explain some of the circumstances where they might have purchased something and not paid sales tax. So far, I have had only one customer who said they had purchased something and not paid tax through a catalog order. They pulled the amount off my ceiling and we went with it.

  32. In response to your statement --- your client has a bigger problem --- SS has her starting her payouts BEFORE turning full retirement age. From your statement, that is not what happened. If she received 2015 benefits -- that would cause an early reduction to full benefit. If that is the case, she needs to bring this up and see if SS allows payback and CORRECT start for when she turns FRA (or she is stuck with diminished benefits). Once she is talking to SS, might as well address all issues.

  33. Everyone is overthinking this. Should have been W-2. Since it was not, Schedule C or C-EZ subject to SE. All the other chatter is simply trying to avoid SE. I guarantee you this is the way an auditor would rule.

  34. My apologies to you (Pacun) for startin' all this mess. Like Gene, I didn't know what all those things were (although I've got the EA and DID also ONCE get an A+ ). They certainly ARE much more impressive (and real, of course) than the Beasts & Fishies guy's and congratulations to you on having the brains and fortitude to slog through what I imagine would be a very long and tough road to get them. Darn it, Gail; it certainly does smart when a body gets slapped with the truth ("...being an unpaid auditor and data entry clerk for the IRS.") But you're right on the money and even though it's too late for me to start technifying, I may yet run for mayor of Dogpatch.

  35. Gail has it exactly. No doubt it's taxable income. I just have a hard time seeing this as being subject to SE tax. It was a favor that went longer than expected, so turned into a paid favor. That is NOT being in the business for profit. Which is where SE tax kicks in.

  36. A+ is a certification for computer technicians, N+ is for network certification, MCP is Microsoft Certified Professional, MCP+I is plus internet, and MSCE is either a Microsoft Certified Engineer or a Master of Science Civil Engineering. MCSE is probably more common - a Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert. Anyway that you look at it, that is an impressive list of credentials. BUT if I had that many certifications in IT, I would probably work in that field instead of being an unpaid auditor and data entry clerk for the IRS.

  37. Crying. I also see it like ILLMAS. SIL is escaping SE tax on the amount she paid for this work. I don't think IRS really wants us all looking for hobby office grunts and shifting our income to them. Even if they hug us.

  38. Shouldn't it be subject to SE? I see it this way, I would normally do my own copies, filing etc..., however if I hire someone "temporary" to do my office filing, I see them as a temporary employee and would issue a box 7 1099.
