Never got over -11 degrees here today.

Depending on where you live, it is very possible for some people to live on that kind of income. Take a look at the car they are driving. Are you familiar with the area where they live? These are the kind of people that the EIC was intended for. I would never send anyone away unless I knew they were out and out lying to me. It is not for us to judge once we have done our due diligence. I would never raise the fee on a family like that. Either be truthful with them and tell them you don't want to be involved or prepare the return at a reduced rate. There are people out there living in a world of hurt. HRB and Liberty are feeding off of them and I find that hard to accept. I will not give them a loan at high or zero interest. I will, however, hold their check. Certain clients know that they have to come cash in hand and they keep coming. As long as EIC is part of the tax law, I feel just as responsible to those clients as I do to the wealthier ones. This is not to indicate that my business base is composed mostly of EIC clients. But, I have several in the mix. Most of my clients are middle class to slightly above.

District Court Ruling Regarding IRS RTRP Regulations
mcb39 replied to lydia33's topic in General Chat
I think they are stirring up a big kettle of confusion. I am glad that I was able to conform and have it behind me. CE has always been a voluntary part of my tax prep. The test didn't hurt me one bit and am glad to have it over as we have enough things to worry about right now with the ATRA and the delay of filing as well as the issues with the tax program (s). No matter what the courts decide, I won't be crying over spilt milk. Any and all knowledge that I gleaned from studying for and taking the test is only to my benefit and for the good of my clients. Those are my major concerns. -
They used to give them as handouts a Tax Insight classes. This year hardly anything. We used to leave with a plastic bag of goodies. What I REALLY miss are the e-file sheets of stickers. I liked to put one on the cover of the client copy of the return. It was just a nice touch.

I use it as well as Quickfinder and if all else fails the MTG. Of course, the first access point is Pub 17, but sometimes you have to dig deeper.

I am not going ballistic either. I am glad I have it behind me and am not sitting on the fence at this critical time and wondering "Should I or shouldn't I?" I wasn't happy about the mandate, but the testing process was an interesting experience and I have done CE on my own for as long as I can remember. If they want to drive us battier than we already are, they picked a good time to do it.

I found out that if the return was rolled over before today's update, the depreciation does not flow. I then rolled over another return that I knew had depreciation and everything was where it belonged. I then deleted the Partnership return that I had rolled over last week. I then rolled it over again and all of the depreciation was populated to the 4562 and the 1065. I now have 4 returns rolled over representative of 4 different scenarios and so far without much data to enter, things are looking OK; other than the speed and the general look and setup of the new interface. IMO, this shows what can happen when you roll returns before you need them. Also, run a recheck of your preference settings. Some of them may have changed. Next week I am maximizing my Ram which I ordered today. Brand new computer ; a shame, but I have to be able to work!

Lots of appts for February, but no W2s as yet and I am not ready to start.

I was served with a subpoena in October for a divorce case. However they were both clients of mine (long-term) and had always filed MFJ. I really never questioned what the ethics issues were here. It was a court subpoena and I would have had to go had they not settled at the eleventh hour. The court did order that I prepare their Return for 2012 since they were still married at the end of the year and have a lot of joint equity in rentals, business property, etc. and this is a community property state. After this year I will continue to retain him as a client and she will have to go elsewhere. They never asked me to bring any work papers, but, of course, they had all of the returns. It was more of a "he said", "she said" kind of thing. In the end I didn't have to go and have no clue how to advise you.

I thought about the $25 limitation on gifts to clients too. Actually, when I prepare my kids' returns, I still deduct the paper, toner, etc that I use as part of the whole. So...........the kids are making me lose money. But, they do come in handy when I need a desk moved or blinds hung. (Anyhow, Lion was pulling our chains......I think!)
-
Does that fall under the category of "gifts to clients"? Generally I don't charge my kids to prepare their tax returns. No income, no expense.

I also loved that roar and missed it for a long time. Can still open some of those old programs and the roar is still there.

You can file a 2011 return, but you have to have the signature date current, which is 2013.

Well, there has to be some pride of self in having complied regardless of what others do. I did receive my PTIN before my CE in Novemeber, but I have a certificate to prove it and have no doubt that the IRS could ask to see it at any time. It doesn't matter to me whether they do or not. I have done CE for as many years as it was available to me and got the 15 credits even when they weren't required. Knowledge gained cannot be taken away from me.

I just add a 200 sf addition to my home office and now they come along with this. I wasn't able to tell from the release whether it would be an either/or or just the straight deduction. Property tax, utilities and insurance are the biggies for me.

Dan, you can go into preferences and change them back to the top.

I just downloaded the update on the WIN 7 computer. All went well. This time I added the same form to the TEST return and rolled over a Partnership Return. All appears to be working OK other than speed which did improve some. There is one odd thing and that is that on the XP program, the download was completed at 97% and on the WIN 7 computer the download was complete at 93%. Is this a clue to something?
-
I just bit the first bullet and updated the program on my old XP computer. I very patiently left the room and washed the dishes while it took its time updating. After the update and the restart, program is working. I was able to open TEST return and even add a form to it. From open program (2 minutes) to open return (1 minute). Now on to doing the same with the new Win 7 computer. BTW, my Medlin is working fine.

I visit that board almost daily, usually with the intent of trying to help some user who is in a world of hurt. Honestly, when it comes to the use of this year's program, I am pretty much in that world with them. I really think that we all need to stick together this year and not try to antagonize anyone.

At this point, there is no allowance made to print either the client list or labels. The last I heard, we might have that in May. This was before all of the other terrible bugs were discovered and it has been downhill ever since. Print the client list and the labels from the 2011 program for now. Don't try to export it, just print it. For my part, I ordered a separate label program, but really, right now, I don't even have the heart to install it.

Now that you mention that; the Wisconsin Motor Vehicle License Application forms have three sheets with two pieces of carbon paper in between. That should have come to my mind right away because my husband and sons have a dealership and I handle those all the time. Does that antiquate Wisconsin, or what? Copy 1: State, Copy 2: Dealer, Copy 3: Purchaser This is also true of the purchase contracts.

I had no reason to; nor did I ever touch the client letter. Again, please note: no problem with XP; Crash problem with Win7. Heaven help anyone who is trying to run this program on Win 8.
-
I deleted the TEST return on Win 7 program. Rolled it over again and it opens fine. Hope this is a clue for someone. Again, no issues with XP.
-
No issues with XP except slowness continues. On Win7 64 bit; program shuts down when attempt is made to open return that opened fine before (TEST return) Please advise. :wall:
