  5. I had one of those. Like you, I knew it was qualified (he is 68 and contributed to the ROTH 100 years ago... well in 1998 anyway) I know his cost basis, so i put that on line 22 so that there is no taxable. Now... if the cost basis is less than the distribution, then that won't be a fix. of course, the real fix is to get a corrected 1099-R.... but we all know how well that will go...

  6. I can't get you a zero but I have a slightly used 1 you can have. But seriously, I don't think the IRS will care if it's blank.

  9. Yes, but now *everybody* knows! I'm sure they are all terribly curious, too. (Eh, a minor Mass. part-year query, nothing to get your knickers in a twist about.)

  10. Sure, talk on your cell phone all you want. My billing timer is still going. Just like a Taxi, the fare keeps increasing whether we are moving or not. And when my office phone rings, they like to ask me "Are you going to take that?" "No. I am here with you now." Rich

  11. Everyone is overthinking this. Should have been W-2. Since it was not, Schedule C or C-EZ subject to SE. All the other chatter is simply trying to avoid SE. I guarantee you this is the way an auditor would rule.

  12. So I have a qualified ROTH distribution that broker doesn't know is qualified and used Code T. Ok, fair enough. ATX sends amount to Line 19 of Form 8606. OK, fair enough, again, as I am apparently the only person on earth who knows it's qualified. My client sure didn't. I had to dig thru records. So, I can override and make line 19 blank. How can I get an actual zero to print there? I'm thinking IRS will think I ignored the issue if line 19 is blank, but there were no nonqualified distributions, and I want a zero there.

  13. Yes, I thought of that line 22 fix, but it's not really truthful, even if basis exceeds distribution, since line 19 SHOULD be zero. But I'll be honest, I am tempted. There is no chance of a code correction, as that's what Code T is for - account custodians with new accounts. Too bad it's an option, and they don't have to find out when the taxpayer contributed. Oh well, that's why we are heroes.

  14. Hahahaha, thank you, and Vanna has nothing on you. If you can't get a zero, I'm in good company.

  17. Clearly the employer thinks that providing this is a taxable benefit to your client. It should be on the W-2 and you need to find out more about the type of insurance, the level of coverage, and who the beneficiaries are before you know whether or not it is subject to FICA, medicare and unemployment taxes. It may not make a difference in social security taxes since he is over the threshold but Medicare has no cap, and since you say he is highly compensated, I'll say that he may also be subject to the .9% Medicare add-on.

  18. And in turn, we learn from your findings. We all get one or two each year of a situation we haven't seen before, and therefore the comfort of coming here for help. Now if this ever comes up we know the source and proper answer to the question. So thanks for posting back what you found and having that strong desire not to just rely on this community, but digging a little deeper! We all benefit from helping each other! I love my Community!

  20. Holy smokes! I was on the road all day, got a flat tire on the way back, had to change it in the mud/ice/slush, and when I got home my email had blown up with paypal notifications. Thank you!

  21. I am not as good a friend as you. I would report this on Sch C as it was compensation for work. If she had worked at McDonalds for two weeks (or two hours), never to return to the food industry, SS and MC tax would have been withheld and paid in starting at the first clock in, and no tax pro would give a second thought as to regular and continuous. Yeah, she was really an employee, but just because that was done incorrectly, it doesn't mean you have to break your neck to help her escape the tax liability somebody should have paid. She can rat out sister-in-law I suppose, or ask sister in law to pay half her SE tax, but you have other fish to fry.

  23. In the early days of efiling (mid-late 90s), I noticed that special characters sometimes cause efile rejections so I made it a policy to only enter numbers and letters. O'Neil became ONeil, etc.

  24. In response to your statement --- your client has a bigger problem --- SS has her starting her payouts BEFORE turning full retirement age. From your statement, that is not what happened. If she received 2015 benefits -- that would cause an early reduction to full benefit. If that is the case, she needs to bring this up and see if SS allows payback and CORRECT start for when she turns FRA (or she is stuck with diminished benefits). Once she is talking to SS, might as well address all issues.

  25. Who here has a NO CELL sign in there waiting area, conference or any where in their office? I don't get this, if I go see my doctor I am sure going to turn off my phone because I respect my doctor's time, but why aren't accountants respected? I don't mind if they call someone for information I might need to prepare the tax return, I actually encourage calling the banker to request important documents, but I don't like it when they take calls or are texting and not giving me their attention.

  26. Tom, what bothers me with this is you said he is a highly compensated employee. Why wasn't this included in his w-2 wages? I feel it should have been. However, line 21 would have the same impact as line 7 but I am not sure how you would show what it was for. If it should have been included in the W-2 wages, then I think your client should talk to his/her employer to have it corrected. Definitely would not be subject to SE tax.

  28. Or just sit quietly and bill the time and let the abuser know you are billing time. Let them determine how valuable that phone call or text is. At your hourly rate, they might be tempted to turn it off or you might just make more money billing time.

  30. A+ is a certification for computer technicians, N+ is for network certification, MCP is Microsoft Certified Professional, MCP+I is plus internet, and MSCE is either a Microsoft Certified Engineer or a Master of Science Civil Engineering. MCSE is probably more common - a Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert. Anyway that you look at it, that is an impressive list of credentials. BUT if I had that many certifications in IT, I would probably work in that field instead of being an unpaid auditor and data entry clerk for the IRS.

  31. Shouldn't it be subject to SE? I see it this way, I would normally do my own copies, filing etc..., however if I hire someone "temporary" to do my office filing, I see them as a temporary employee and would issue a box 7 1099.

  32. Yeah, I wonder if it isn't a lack of fraudulent returns with all the new security systems in place.

  33. 1.- Scammers are not efiling either. 2.- People have not received their Obamacare papers and their refunds were put on hold last year so they are taking their time collecting all the info. 3.- Tax preparers started their season late. 4.- People were told that their refunds were going to be hold until Feb 15th.

  34. I'm behind in e filing because I'm waiting on clients to give me their driver's license info for NY returns. Especially the kids away at college partying while I'm working to get them more beer money. You think they would be right on this.

  35. The con men (strike that - I meant to say con persons - we here in Dogpatch observe all the PC amenities) are apparently gonna be flockin' here to get their "short forms" done. Who know, maybe John H. was right when he said price and distance were no object -- except I b'lieve their focus is on fleecin' the sheep. Somebody here the other day said all we used to have to watch out for was Nigerian princes, but they're a little more savvy now. This guy acquired a local area code number to make his pitch. First off, although he wouldn't give HIS name, he was very insistent on US maintaining Circular 230 strict confidentiality (never heard THAT one before). Next, said he'd send all his stuff to me on a thumb drive with links. Told him not to worry; although I have a friend who writes The Weekly Wiper gossip-column, she would cross-her-heart promise to keep mum. On the down side, I advised him that, while we don't deal with thumbs, we must occasionally give obnoxious people the finger and I believed he qualified. Must have been the sensitive type 'cause he hung up. .

  36. Bart: You don't need to worry about doing his work. I think he was shopping around because he called me too. He seemed honest enough, so I gave him a fair estimate and he sent me his thumb drive.
