You do know, don't you, that all printers have a built in sensor that detects if a tax preparer owns it and if so, it is programmed to fail sometime during late March or early April? Same thing with confounded-puters. During the past ten years I've had one or the other (or both) go out in early April five times! I just replaced my printer about two weeks ago (deep sigh).10 points

My clients that have been sending me high end (like artisan) chocolate have struck again. Moonlight Chocolatiers from St. John's Oregon. I am in utter bliss....8 points

^ Ninja, really?! Do you use ATX? Also, I noticed in your profile that your email is to HRB. Do you still work for HRB, because I'm surprised that you are here asking for help and that you don't have resources at your disposal to answer this, or to take the question to a higher level. Many of us devote time freely to help our fellow members, mostly ATX users or those of us that started with ATX, but I'd like to think that we aren't supporting the large chain preparers that have many other resources available to them. My time is is too valuable for that.8 points

These friendships and displays of appreciation are some of the best parts of this business. I have a special relationship with one client, a nice older Italian lady from Long Island. She sends me about 5 lbs. of pignoli cookies every year. You've got to try one. I visit her twice a year and drop off a bottle of my homemade wine that she and her now deceased husband loved. I had given them a commemorative bottle of wine we labeled for 9/11, and when the husband died some years ago I went to the funeral and in his casket was that bottle of wine with his arm around it. He was first generation who loved this country. Those chocolates, cookies, scotch, coffee, and goodies mean a lot more than something to enjoy, it's love, and we can really feel it in every bite and sip.7 points

I got my second renewal e-note from Drake today. I agree with all the above. They could at least wait until I have time to see straight. BTW, it occurs to me that I spent twice as much time reading this one thread as it would have taken to read the renewal e-mail I'm griping about.6 points

My third child is 23 today and made ME fried baloney, egg, cheese sandwich for breakfast. With mayo. He is thankful for his life.6 points

Me too. I deal with a Simple IRA for my husbands S-Corp payroll, but learned now how to handle it with a Sch. C business owner.5 points

Well, I want to see what y'all think IRS would do to him first. You know, there is a time for everything. A time to embrace, a time to refrain from embracing, a time to die. You know, I like how Ecclesiastes lays it out. Patience is a virtue and all that.4 points

This applies to so much of my life. But it's not wasted time if you enjoy wasting it. And I don't know how smart it is sending an email when they KNOW we are not renewing before April 15, and it's going to get lost in the long line of emails. Probably those sending them out are just doing a job and don't care if they get any results.4 points

I stumbled upon the answer. The Form 4562 was on manual mode( why, i have no clue). Solution - delete Form 4562 then add Form 4562 back to return. Deduction now being allowed.4 points

Just had a client call up and freak out that I missed 90% of his income on his return and I had screwed it all up. After a few minutes he admitted he was looking at a tiny 1041 we do for him - he wasn't even looking at the 1040. Every year he does something very similar to this. Last year he wanted me to argue with Fidelity that his wife's wash sale of a stock wasn't really a wash sale - even though it was a wash sale (turned out he didn't know what a wash sale was). Year before that he thought I should go through all of his wife's 1099 trades and verify that Fidelity had the right numbers - even though he knows I don't have ANY of the information. And she has about 200 trades every year (and reports a loss every year).4 points

Nothing here, either, but lots of hugs. My usual chocolate chip cookie provider is on extension due to husband's illness so maybe later. Sniff, sniff...4 points

Thanks, everybody, that was truly a team effort. This guy knows nothing about what he bought here. He was completely thrown off when I told him he'll have to pay taxes on withdrawals. He has been preparing his own returns, too, and it cost him $2,400 in 2014. Will amend and slap him over the head with it. He's bringing in 2012 pronto. 2013 whenever he has time. I predict he will have time very soon.4 points

The match is $842. The only part of the simple IRA that would be subtracted to arrive at Sch C net income is the employees' share, not the share of the sole proprietor himself. To that net result, apply the 92.35%, then use the resulting net inc from SE to calc the 3% match. The sole proprietor's contribution limit for 2015 is $12,500 and would also be allowed a $3K catch-up if he is over 50. Remember, with a simple plan it is possible to defer 100% of earnings up to that limit.4 points

I couldn't have said this any better. I for one am changing software programs this year. I know the Drake price but not the ATX price. What about the price to get me back to ATX? Wonder if there is any specials there? I used ATX when it was Saber Pro and NTS was the transmitter up until the CCH buy out and the old board snafu. There are better ways to get out business. Providing good support is just one. Hiding the price always tells me they don't want you to know the price for fear it would chase you away. So, they have a better chance of winning your business if they can at least get you on the phone and then the car buying starts.4 points

I got Clementines, Almonds, and Organic Tea from my clients today. I wonder if they're trying to tell me something.4 points

Seriously!! This is going to kill him, and it's the first year I've done the return, also the first year he's married. Congratulations, I wish your wife didn't have "an issue" so you need to file separately. She may get healed of the issue when I tell him what he owes.4 points

But how do you really feel about the subject, Rita? He didn't go into your backyard, did he?3 points

I have gotten a lot of hugs. So has my husband. He also got 3 seedlings yesterday for his garden!3 points

Hey Rita. I agree completely. I enjoy the board and need a break every once in a while. Plus I think it is insensitive to send marketing mail this close to tax day. I just got a chuckle from the realization that as I was sitting there agreeing with what everyone was saying that I had spent twice as much time as that goofy email would have taken.3 points

I have always heard that for some things, if you have to ask the price, you can't afford it.3 points

Nor me. Lots of hugs. Well, I do have a client who's been bringing me lunch for the past couple years. She schedules an appointment at noon; we eat; I prepare her returns; I brew some tea; and we eat dessert. The first year I provided some of the food. But, she loves to cook and is single, so she's been bringing it all including homemade soup. I just make us a cup of tea to go with dessert. And, this year a couple of ladies who always come together made plans to go out to lunch with me after tax season (but, not sure if they're treating; I'll try to pick up the check).3 points

Thanks for the tip! I have only one tray and I think I know where the rollers are located. They appear to be in the front to push the paper not in back where I expected them. But I don't see rollers for the envelopes so wonder how they get through. Some investigation is warranted and soon! I am weary of pressing that button over and over....3 points

Read the partnership agreement. If there is none, have them write down their joint understanding. If partners are active in the business and taxed as a partnership, SE tax. GP would be spelled out in agreement and could include anything that would be paid out even if they had no profits, such as a set $ amount per month or healthcare premiums.3 points

I saw the Facebook question about access this morning, and Eric I have your email address in my contacts. But I was getting ready to leave the office for an extended appointment and at this time of year I didn't have the presence of mind to send you an email. Anyhow, a little down time reminds us of how important this forum is to us. Thanks Eric for taking care of us. We all appreciate you immensely.3 points

Most of my older clients that bring me good stuff have all passed away or are in a home and I have to deal with their kids. A lot of my younger clients, just want to push me to get their freaking returns done before anyone else's.3 points

Yes, as of the middle of January. RitaB and I are admins. Not so much for serious business questions, fun stuff, although it is useful when we have problems like today. As always, Eric takes care of us very well and did so again today with his fix. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1688515908061571/3 points

It's like the special shoes that are so special, you gotta add em to the special cart to see the special price. The very last thing any of us want today is a renewal notice from software. Or any solicitation. Ok, except cookies, cookie solicitations are ok. Everybody else, get outta my life. Also time to change my greeting: "Hey, this is Rita. Come pick up your #$%^."3 points

I've gotten hugs too! Maybe it's because I work out of my home...got cake last week too. And yeah, I've gained weight back again.2 points

The ID number and address of the payer is not required when you use the 1099-Int worksheet. If you wanted to, you could enter SSN right after name of payer.2 points

It just occurred to me that, while the paper initially doesn't go through, the printer works fine when I press the button. If the rollers were so bad, how does the paper get through when I press the button? Pondering the mysteries of myriad tax season obstacles....2 points

We let them decide. "Do you want to file? You will probably get a letter that I have to respond to and charge for writing the response." They chose. I charge if they file, I give them their documents back if they don't. Sometimes, things change and they come back. Like this year. Client did not have a filing requirement for the last 3 years. Got married and brought her spouse in. Karma. Tom Newark, CA2 points

very bad planning and also the adm should have consulted an attorney, it might have been possiable to get the benificaries the IRA but not now, have seen it done twice in the last few years and it was all dependent upon how the trust was worded, but once the trust cashed it in, it is over, big tax bill2 points
